Dear members of the NANA Board of Directors,
We, as owners of NANA and as signatories of this letter, request that NANA and its subsidiaries refrain from renewing or signing any additional contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the near future.
We believe that ICE and people who work at detention centers that hold immigrants for ICE are not aligned with the values held by the Inupiaq members of the NANA regional corporation. ICE enforcement goes directly against the values shared and lived by NANA shareholders, both in and out of our traditional homelands.
Our Iñupiat Ilitqusiat have been passed down through generations of Inupiat. When our corporation was formed, those values should have been transferred to the corporation that represents our people. The following values are broken by ICE and the people who run detention centers for ICE:
Respect for Others
Cooperation
Love for Children
Respect for Elders
Respect for One Another
Avoidance of Conflict
Family Roles
Responsibility to Tribe
Akima, a NANA subsidiary, has been identified as the source of the mistreatment of ICE detainees[1],[2], which is carried out by our employees, in the detention centers which ICE has run in the past[3],[4],[5],[6],[7],[8], resulting in significant medical problems as well as inhumane treatment. Our employees are directly responsible for the mistreatment of ICE detainees.
The responsibility that you have as an elected member of our corporation is to uphold our values and to make informed decisions on our behalf. Our culture has always been one of trust, but this cannot be ignored. We are requesting that a full investigation be conducted on the mistreatment and the gross management of these contracts.
Signed:
