Romero Brandy “Kirigami”, formerly a member of the Donquixote Family, is the captain of the Origami Pirates and currently resides among the new world. She quits as Donquixote Doflamingo’s subordinate after the events of marineford to form her crew. She ate the Craft-Craft (Kogei-Kogei no mi) fruit which allows her to create and control anything paper.

Appearance

Brandy is a very beautiful woman, with a tall, slim figure, standing at around 5’9 feet. She has red/brown eyes, a long, slender nose similar to Nico Robin’s, and dark brown skin. Her most striking feature is her orange hair band, which she always wears on her hair, which is dark green/black.

Pre Timeskip

Brandy had longer hair which reached to her waist before the Timeskip. She typically dressed in more pastel and frilly fashion, to the point of closely resembling Doflamingo, her captain and mentor. In Jaya and Water 7, Brandy wears a pink, long sleeved cardigan with a matching pink miniskirt, adorning a necklace which has the Donquixote pirates’ jolly roger embedded. In Sabaody Archipelago, she wears an orange-pink dress with a thin, shoulder rim and decoration of red origami patterns at the bottom of the dress. In Marineford, Brandy wears a pink, fluffy coat resembling Doflamingo’s, and underneath, she has a strapless, light-purple shirt with a long velvet rim at the bottom. She wears a sash yellow belt with the Donquixote jolly roger embroidered in the middle, and striped pants.

Post Timeskip

Brandy, after quitting the Donquixote pirates, cuts her hair to shoulder length in the post timeskip. In Punk Hazard, Brandy has a purple winter coat on to endure the cold environment. Underneath, she wears a dark pink, strapless corset with fingerless gloves. She wears dark grey pants which separate at the bottom, stitched with fishnets. In Dressrosa, Brandy wears a black, low cut minidress, with a mid-sleeve length, light purple cardigan over the dress. Post Dressrosa, she has visible scars on her shoulders where her brand used to be, after forcibly ripping the strings out from her shoulders. In Zou Island, Brandy wears lighter clothing, a loose, strapped magenta shirt which frills at the bottom and exposes her shoulders, with dark red shorts.

Personality

Brandy is a sly, witty, cunning and charming young woman, using her traits with precision and drama. She is quite expressive, and often exaggerates her personality to an extent, while still giving space for others. She often likes to tease others, and uses such wits to push them to an edge e.g Law and Zoro, according to her, she only does it to get a reaction out of them, which is a source of entertainment to her. Brandy would be someone who would be more pushy to what she needs or wants from others, her pushiness can lead her to be demanding at times, needing things to be done in a certain way, which then can lead her to be easily agitated.

Brandy can get quite hot-headed, especially with her navigator, Cole, who she can often be seen berating him for his foolishness. She insists on keeping the crew altogether and in groups, so as nobody would get lost or hurt. Her pushiness of the crew became a fatal flaw after her sudden departure from the origami pirates to Dressrosa, since she would always put them all before herself.

She has a hard time opening up to her proper feelings, another flaw of hers is the habit of bottling up her feelings so as not to burden her crew. Due to her past and traumatic experiences previously, she struggles to communicate her feelings over the fear of being looked down upon and pushed to the ground by others. She has a deep insecurity deep down, over the pressures of needing to be “perfect” by others, which had ripened in the Donquixote family. Due to her treatment by Doflamingo, isolation and overworking in the black market as a child, Brandy never knew better or healthy ways to properly love or to cope, and often fears of ending up like Doflamingo.

Background

Romero Brandy was born to a former Marine soldier, Romero Mara, and an unnamed father. When she was an infant, her mother, who was the daughter of a renowned Marine captain and a Cipher Pol agent, refused to inherit either jobs from her parents, and decided to resign to a quiet life as well as to keep Brandy away from the World Government. While Mara leaves on a ship with Brandy’s father, the ship gets caught into a storm, with only the family remaining. As soon as the lifeboat arrived to rescue them, there was only such space for either Mara or Brandy, her father insisted that Mara leave her behind and that they “could just have another child”. However, she refuses and stays on the wrecked ship with Brandy, as her father cold-heartedly sails away on the lifeboat, leaving the two behind.

However, Mara is discovered a day later by no other than Gol D. Roger and the Dark King Rayleigh, who rescued her from the sea and took care of her and Brandy. She is dropped off to Thistle Island days later, in which she wrote a letter to thank the Roger pirates for their generosity and hospitality, as well as making Rayleigh the unofficial godfather for her daughter. Brandy grew up on the island for the first few years of her life with Mara, the two worked hard as farmers and other part time jobs they could handle for extra money. Brandy often dreamt of sailing out to sea, while she became rather distant from Mara, who objected and argued with her dreams with the fear of her ending up like her grandparents. Many years ago, a war broke out between the marines and the villagers for their materials for weapons, and after one of their captains, Brandy’s grandfather, shot a child for “trespassing”, the battles and bloodshed kept going until his departure, which led the village in complete ruin and life loss.

One day, after an argument with Mara, Brandy ran away from home, only to come back hours later to find Mara gone, nowhere to be found. She grew to believe that her mother hated her and abandoned her, harbouring a sense of anger and guilt that caused her to leave. That wasn’t the case however, as Mara was forced to leave Thistle Island to return to the marines for duties, as her parents and the Government had discovered the letters of generosity she wrote to Roger, years after his execution. While she was gone, Mara attempted to escape while stealing a devil fruit, she instructed Rayleigh to go to the island to deliver it to Brandy, but not to tell her where it came from. She was found and executed later on by the marines, dying almost forgotten by everyone. She meets Rayleigh on one faithful day where he delivers her the fruit without mentioning it came from her Mara, to keep her promise. After he leaves, Brandy eats the Craft-Craft fruit, the ability to create and control paper.

Thistle Island

Thistle Island is located in the North Blue, as one of the larger islands in the region. The island reaches 20,000 km with a population of 50,000 inhabitants, in different villages and towns in between. The place is known for its rich greenery as well as its famous “coves”, full of the richest materials and riches such as jewels and diamonds hidden deep in the caves. Because of this, it is often inhabited by marine soldiers and captains who retrieve the material on orders using the villagers for harsh labour. Brandy grew up surrounded by the cruelty and harshness unleashed onto the villagers, and vowed one day to enact revenge. Her next step was to confront the marines on the island while using her ability. The plan went horribly wrong, as the amounts of paper used caused it to spread recklessly, catching fire at a near campsite. The town eventually engulfed in flames, and Romero Brandy escaped on one of the marine ships, away from Thistle Island.

Cipher Pol

Brandy was found by world government agents upon the marine ship, when news of the fire broke out. Recognizing her as the granddaughter of the infamous Cipher Pol agent, Romero Gia, they decided to take her in and train her with the knowledge of her ability. For the next year, she was trained harshly by her grandmother and CP0 to become a child soldier, as well as enhancing her skills to create different origami weapons as well as using the material and particles in paper to forge letters. At the age of eight, she ran away from the organisation as she much rather would stick to her dream of sailing the seas than become another soldier. She travelled to different towns, pickpocketing to fend for herself while having a bounty on her for leaving + causing the Thistle Island fire a year ago.

Donquixote Family

Brandy at the age of eight attempts to run away from a couple of marine soldiers, after being caught with pickpocketing. At the same time, Donquixote Doflamingo was nearby, fighting off other soldiers while backed into a corner. He meets Brandy, who manages to finish them off much to his surprise. He watches as she is cornered by her grandmother who was about to kill her for betrayal, shoots Gia with the gun from one of the Marine soldiers, and kills her. became interested in her craft-craft ability and decided to take her into the Donquixote pirates. He introduced her to the family before he requested for her to demonstrate her ability. Brandy at this point can create complex origami that are extremely sharp as well as to forge letters with paper, Doffy thought of great use for this ability of hers and sent her to Giolla to be trained for the first couple of years. There, she developed a friendship with some of the members like Baby 5, Buffalo and Dellinger, but her closest relationship at that time was with Trafalgar D. Water Law. She knew of his disease but paid no mind to it, believing there to be a cure. She’d spend her days off hanging out with him by throwing paper planes at him with a bad pun, or make a giant paper plane for them to fly around. However, by the age of 11, she had become more distant with Law as Doffy wanted her around for her ability to cover up any evidence or forge documents to gain access to the black market, as well as gaining information on the Ope-Ope fruit. She had become rather attached to Doffy, seeing him as a father figure later on in her life while she went on missions with him. Once Law and Corazon disappeared for the cure, Brandy felt anxious and resentful deep down that the two left because of her, or that Law hated her while she left. On minion island, Doffy sends her with Vergo to obtain information of the two, Brandy catches Law on his own and proceeds to fight him. Rosinante rushes back to knock her away to protect him, she runs off, managing to lead him to the family, using her origami to conceal different pathways, after he hides Law away. She was there to witness the death of Rosinante at the hands of Doflamingo, which messed her up in a way for years on end. From there on, Doffy began to train her to become his new right-hand woman in years to come, replacing Law essentially. She essentially became like a daughter to him, as his “favourite” child of the Donquixote family.

Water 7

Brandy’s first appearance would be in Water 7, where she would spend the day looking for new materials for her ship. She meets the strawhats while they look for a shipwright nearby. Luffy mistakes her for a citizen here before asking her bluntly for a shipwright, while Usopp and Nami berate him. Brandy finds them all amusing, and gives them directions to the Galley-La company to help fix the Merry Go. However, she won’t go empty handed and instructs the trio to go grab her some paint on their way to save her time, much to their dismay. She puts on a rather cold, diva attitude towards everyone in the Galley-La company later on after Luffy and Nami leave to find Usopp and their case of berries. Brandy negotiates with Mayor Iceberg about the prices of the ship materials, bargaining for as little as possible. Once she discovered that the three who retrieved paint for her were the Strawhats, she immediately becomes intrigued and begins her research on them. She is notified of the annual flood coming to the city and she heads back on the sea train with her supplies, curious than ever about the strawhats.

Sabaody Archipelago

Brandy is present at the Sabaody Archipelago alongside the worst generation, she spends most of her time shopping for expensive clothes and items. She arrives at the auction to make sure it all goes smoothly; although her true intention lies with the strawhats and Trafalgar Law. Once she discovered that he would be at the auction, she attended with the infamous bounty hunter Brookshire Juni to fight him. As soon as Luffy punches the celestial dragon and all chaos ensues, Brandy gets into a battle with Law, using her craft-craft fruit. The destruction around them collapses which causes both to retreat, Brandy swears to enact her vengeance onto Law and his crew as she reports the incident to her captain, Doflamingo. Brandy had already resented the Celestial Dragons, but she wouldn’t know until later on how they were involved with Thistle Islands. She becomes aware of Portgas D. Ace’s arrest and execution, in which she wonders how it will go down between the marines and Whitebeard.

Impel Down/Marineford

Brandy is sent with Doflamingo to the warlord meeting in preparation for their potential battle with the Whitebeard pirates. In Marineford, she runs out to the battlefield instructed by Doffy in order to test her strength and loyalty. She meets Stinger Emerald, a now resigned Marine officer who forms a quick alliance with her. The two get separated as Brandy fights off members of Marco’s division. She was there to witness the deaths of Portgas D. Ace and Whitebeard, both inevitably making her reflect upon her life. Once she reunites with Stinger swiftly, she makes Brandy rethink her position and how unfair it was for Doflamingo to have made her life transactional and used it in his favour. After Marineford, her views completely changed once she discovered that the Celestial Dragons enslaved and captured the people on Thistle Island for their materials, as well as her grandfather’s squad being responsible for extracting their materials wrongfully for years. She gets into a fight with Doflamingo and leaves the Donquixote family, thus forming the “Origami Pirates”. Sometime during the timeskip, she formed an alliance with the heart pirates, much to Law’s lasting grudge towards her.

    Post Timeskip: Punk Hazard

Brandy and the Origami pirates arrive at Punk Hazard, after receiving a signal of help from Trafalgar Law; however, this is revealed to be a trap from Caesar Clown and Vergo, in an attempt to lure Brandy in, She splits the group up in three, with Stinger and Cole with her to search inside the laboratory. Stinger gets into a battle with Vergo while Cole and Brandy attempt to fend Caesar off. Brandy, during the whole trip, starts to feel strange with a sudden headache, like somebody was watching her. She suddenly starts to attack Law and the remaining members, as her form immediately switches to a familiar origami mask, hiding her face. She runs off in the distance after being overpowered by the three, in which she is led outside by a familiar voice. Outside where Baby 5 and Buffalo are battling Franky, she catches up to them and attempts to fight as well before being knocked down by Franky. Doflamingo arrives when the marines capture her, Buffalo and Baby 5, and brings the three back to Dressrosa. Brandy wakes up there in her old room, where she is met and welcomed back by the other family members and Doflamingo himself, she immediately has a terrible feeling in her gut on what is going to happen. Doflamingo gives her a choice; either return to the Donquixote pirates or her entire crew would be killed, he reminds her that he could have her kill them by force, with the strings he implanted in her shoulders right before she left two years ago.

Dressrosa

Brandy reaches out through the den-den mushi to the Strawhats, Law and the Origami PIrates the next day, she tells them not to come for her and that she would not be seeing them again for she is a Donquixote pirate, to the crew’s shock. She said all this in front of Doflamingo, so as to keep him away from the Origami Pirates. However, she has no idea that the Origami pirates are still on their way with Law and the Strawhats, more determined than ever to bring her back. Brandy had to help out with forging the fake announcement of Doflamingo’s reassignment from his warlord position, and is escorted by the three other officers in the country. She is surprised and horrified to see Law and the Origami pirates, not wanting them to come here or see Law get hurt. When he is shot and captured by Doflamingo in battle, she takes it upon herself to sneak through the castle and save him with Luffy and Viola.

She leads a pathway for them to retrieve him from, Viola notices it from her all seeing eye that it’s Brandy helping them  out, and is greatly relieved. Brandy joins their escape, and apologises to Viola for mistreating her in the past and all the pain and horror the family had caused; in the past, Viola had closely resembled Brandy’s mother, Mara whom she had resented wrongly, which made her act out in an attempt to block out any memory she would have of her. However, Viola forgives her to Brandy’s surprise, understanding how she was only under Doflamingo’s control and how he used her pain for his own benefit, reminding Brandy that she still has a heart deep down unlike the other members.

When they reach outside the castle under its dismantling of Pic, and the “birdcage”’s arrival, she assists Luffy in getting the key back from Rebecca to free Law from the seastone shackles; she arrives at the top after Diamante’s defeat. When they finally approach Doflamingo and Trebol, he uses his strings to control Brandy once more towards Law, as her origami mask starts to show. She desperately attempts to fight back while pleading for Law to hear him out how it’s all a trick.

She starts apologising over and over for her past in aiding the death of Rosinante, and how Law was the first real friend she ever has. Doflamingo attempts to force her to kill Law with an origami knife; however, she fights back harder, as she forces the hand that held the knife to stab her in her shoulder, to Law’s shock and horror. As her mask slowly starts to melt away, she cries out that she never asked for any of this and why he couldn’t see that she changed, as she rips out the strings with both of her hands, to Doflamingo’s utter shock. He becomes furious at her rebellion, reminding her how even after all her efforts, she will always be a burden to others and she could never fix the mistakes from the past. He gets his pistol to shoot Law, before Brandy blocked the way and protected Law from being shot. Before she passes out, she tells the stunned Law that she hopes she did the right thing.

She is unconscious for the Luffy v Doflamingo fight, but she is treated right after Dressrosa is freed and wakes up at the old house. She’s relieved to see everyone is alive, especially Law, who tended to her wounds the whole time. He still doesn’t understand why she would do such a thing for him and risk her life, but realises through memories that her heart is just like Corazon’s, beating stronger than anyone else.
