COMBATING RACISM.
‘ if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you are choosing the side of the oppressor’
racism has been in issue in every country in the world for many, many years. it is important that we all do our part in fighting racism because horrific acts are still being committed in this day and age.
fighting racism and supporting movements like BLM should not be a one-time thing we post on our social media to show our support. it’s good that people are trying to spread awareness. however, it is simply not enough to say ‘this is so horrible’ or tagging people in a chain or just tagging #BLM. it is not enough to be not racist because we need to be actively anti-racist. we cannot say we stand for something if we do not actively remember to educate ourselves, teach others and actively participate in the movements we support.
there are many things we can do from wherever we are right now to help the current protests & blm: signing petitions, texting/calling, donating, educating yourself and others…….etc.
countless lives have been stolen away for NO good reason and everyone needs to do something to make it stop, and everyone can play a part.
a tough realisation for many, if not all of us, is that we are brought up in an inherently racist society; countries built on the foundation of colonisation or slavery and the like. everyone has certain ideas in their head that help them perceive the world the way they do and our culture, our society plays a big part in that. therefore, we need to become self-aware and ask ourselves: am i racist? we may be racist without even realising it and that’s why a step in the right direction is self-awareness and realisation. as mentioned above, we need to be more than just not racist, we need to be actively anti-racist. so i ask all of you reading this to remember what countless people have been saying: continually educate yourself, always correct others when they’ve done something racist, change the way we teach young children/those growing up, and more.
