Match Report

Nenagh AFC under 16 Girls team travelled to play Peake Villa in Thurles on bank holiday Sunday in glorious October weather

The strength in depth of the squad was put to the test for this tie with the team missing a few players. The match provided great entertainment for the sizeable crowd who turned up to watch. Both teams put in a great effort in what proved to be a very tight affair

The defences proved stubborn and chances were few and far between. Overall Peake Villa created the better chances in the match but resolute defending and a star performance by goalkeeper Kiara Hearty kept our opponents at bay

The sides could not be separated during normal time and extra time with the tie finishing 0-0. So the dreaded penalty shoot out was the deciding factor

Katie Costelloe, Kate Cavanagh and Grace Fleming scored Nenagh’s first 3 penalties. Peake Villa missed their first 3 with Kiara Hearty making 2 brilliant diving saves for the first and third penalties. So, the girls are now through to the last 16 of the Women’s U16 National Cup

Many congratulations to the girls on a great team effort. For many, it’s their first experience of a National Cup and 11 a side soccer. Kiara Hearty was brilliant in goals. The centre back pairing of Fiona Kirwan and Leanne Ryan was rock solid. Great to have Fiona back from injury and Leanne Ryan put in her best performance in a Nenagh jersey

Emily Griffin and Sine Morris provided great support as full backs. Caoimhe Kennedy’s determination and spirit was to the fore as having just recovered from being ill she put in a starring performance in centre midfield. Katie Costelloe was as reliable as ever in that central role

Grace Fleming was also excellent on the left flank and Captain Orlaith Clarke was brilliant running herself ragged on the other flank. Kate Cavanagh and Hannah Tucker were willing workers in the forward roles

In addition Leah Meaney, Sadhbh Shoer and Elle Mulqueen provided fresh legs from the line with the roll on roll off sub format providing great relief on a warm and sunny afternoon

Hard luck to Peake Villa

It was nice for our girls to be on the right side of the shoot out but we also feel for our opponents. We got a great welcome over there and we wish them all the best for the rest of their season
