About YBCA Fellows

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) is the Bay Area’s creative home for civic action. We believe that culture precedes change, and it is the responsibility of arts organizations to spur and support societal movement. The YBCA Fellows program brings together creative citizens from across the Bay Area to engage in facilitated inquiry, dialogue and project generation. The cohort will explore timely themes in our society. Together, they’ll deploy art and culture to inspire community transformation and new possibilities in the public imagination. YBCA Fellows will push the boundaries of how creative practice can affect change. YBCA will select 30 individuals to join our next Fellowship cohort. The cohort will last approximately one year, launching in September 2016.

Who We’re Looking For

YBCA is interested in working with changemakers who live in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is not just an opportunity for artists; rather, for all creative, socially inclined individuals. This is a place for makers, thinkers, do-gooders and provocateurs to collaborate and work in partnership with YBCA. The only firm requirement is a passion for building a more hopeful and equitable future. Full-time YBCA staff are not eligible to apply.

Benefits of Fellowship

·       The opportunity to delve deeply into the intersection of cultural and social responsibility.
·       An illuminating program of tools and ideas; driven by YBCA culture makers and thinkers.
·       Up close and personal access to world-renowned artists.
·       The opportunity to connect and collaborate with an expanded network of Bay Area changemakers.
·       A public platform for the presentation of Fellowship projects, as well as production support.
·       $1,000 honorarium.

How it Works

This cohort of Fellows will ask and answer the question: "Why CITIZENSHIP?"

This question was sourced at our annual YBCA 100 convening and will drive our practice for the coming year. During monthly gatherings, YBCA Fellows will bring a variety of experiences and perspectives to the research process. This is an environment in which all participants should be open to, at times, being both influencer and influenced. The program will introduce ideas and tools from artists and thinkers presented by YBCA to help Fellows refine and evolve ideas. Over the course of the year, the group will engage in meaningful conversation and catalyze action by generating projects to be presented publicly at YBCA. The yearlong process culminates with the Fellows presenting projects at YBCA’s Public Square [YBCA’s bi-annual event designed to spur conversation, cultivate empathy and address the key questions of our time].

Honorarium

In exchange for meeting the full criteria for the program, each Fellow will be paid $1,000 for their participation.

How to Apply
