The Living Wage Campaign

PETITION FOR A LIVING WAGE
We the undersigned, in recognition of the University of Virginia’s historical unwillingness to treat its low-wage staff as full members of our community, demand:
- The University implement a living wage, currently calculated at $16.84 + healthcare, for all of its workers. Wages must move with the cost of living in Charlottesville.
- Contracted workers, like those who work in the dining halls or for cleaning services, not be left out of any wage increases. The standing opinion of the Virginia Attorney General—that the University may not require or consider specific wage rates when procuring services—has been used as a scapegoat since its issuance in 2006. We believe the Opinion is circumventable or should be overridden by act of the General Assembly.
- That UVA materially support affordable worker housing, which will reduce commute times, cut emissions, and improve the cost of living. Such support could take the form of University-owned housing, collaboration with organizations such as the Charlottesville Low-Income Housing Coalition, the Public Housing Association of Residents, the Charlottesville Planning Commission, or some combination of strategies.
- The University continue and institutionalize its involvement with low-paid staff. Workers must be able to have their voices heard without fear of retribution, and management must be kept accountable for any abuses of power.
