2016-2017 Housing Sign Up Information and Interest Form for Gender Inclusive Living Experience (GILE)

Housing Sign Up Information and Interest Form for Gender Inclusive Living Experience (GILE)

The University of Michigan 2016 - 2017 The Gender Inclusive Living Experience (GILE) is one of several gender-inclusive housing options offered at the University of Michigan. GILE is intended for students who are interested in having a safe, inclusive, comfortable and supportive community living experience for people of all gender identities and expressions. This community supports students who identify as transgender* and gender non-conforming* in choosing (or being placed with) a roommate of any gender. Students who live in this community will be expected to contribute positively to the community by: > offering support and encouragement for the living environment, > respecting floor members’ different motivations for choosing this living option, > embracing and learning from experiences different from one’s own, > actively participating in community events, and > abiding by all regulations as outlined in The Statement and the Community Living at Michigan handbook (CLAM) Interested students must be eligible to participate in Housing Sign-Up (review “Who is Eligible to Participate” on the Housing website: http://housing.umich.edu/sign-up for more information. For more information on the different gender inclusive housing options available, please visit the Gender Inclusive Housing web site: http://housing.umich.edu/gender-inclusive. If you are interested in a gender inclusive room or apartment space, a personal and confidential assessment of the available options is available. To discuss your interest or preferences, contact the Gender Inclusive Housing Team at gender.inclusive.housing@umich.edu. Definitions > Transgender is a term used for people whose gender identity, expression or behavior is different from those typically associated with their assigned sex at birth, including but not limited to transsexuals, cross-dressers, androgynous people, genderqueers and gender non-conforming people. > For the purpose of gender inclusive housing, gender non-conforming is a term for individuals whose gender expression is different from societal expectations related to gender. > Gender identity is an individual’s internal sense of being a man, a woman, both, neither, two-spirit, multi-gender, bi-gender, or another configuration of gender. Since gender identity is internal, one’s gender identity is not necessarily visible to others. > Gender expression is the external manifestation of one's gender identity, usually expressed through "masculine", "feminine" or gender variant behavior, clothing, haircut, voice or body characteristics. > Cisgender is a term used to describe people who, for the most part, identify as the gender they were assigned at birth. For example, if a doctor said “it’s a boy!” when you were born, and you identify as a man, then you could be described as cisgender. In other words, ‘cisgender’ is used to describe people who are not transgender.
