About the UMass Permaculture Initiative:
UMass Permaculture is changing the way students interact with their food and surroundings with the creation of on-campus permaculture gardens. Started in 2010, this initiative has brought together students from all academic realms, as well as faculty, staff, and community members to convert underutilized grass lawns on the campus into edible, educational, and biodiverse gardens. UMass Permaculture provides empowering, hands-on learning opportunities, beautiful gathering and educational space, as well as fresh, organic, super local produce for the Dining Commons, while serving as a model for communities and institutions worldwide. Since the first garden at Franklin, we have expanded to 5 on-campus permaculture gardens. See here for more info: http://www.umassdining.com/sustainability/permaculture
The UMass Permaculture Practicum:
Now you can be part of our ground-breaking initiative through a new hands-on educational program! Each person enrolled in the UMass Permaculture Garden Crew will receive 1 credit (Pass/Fail) per semester to work in the gardens for 3 hours a week (two 1.5 hour sessions), as well as help out with select other UMass Permaculture special events. Students will select two of the following sessions to attend on a weekly basis: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 9:30-11am. This course will run from September 17th until November 20th. Each meeting will be guided by our Garden Manager and will involve educational components, but no outside of class assignments.
We will meet at the Franklin Permaculture Garden most days, but will also work at the Berkshire, Hillside, Hampshire, and Worcester gardens as needed.
Who we're looking for:
Excited students who are just as passionate as we are about permaculture and sustainable farming! We work in a team setting so we need candidates who are comfortable working in groups, but we also value the individual skills and creativity that you bring. We look for diversity of any form, and seek individuals who are motivated, responsible, and great communicators. Permaculture, gardening, or farming knowledge & experience a plus, but not necessary!
Instructions and Timeline:
