ThurGOOD Reads Winter 2017
Join us for our inaugural reading selection, Angela Davis: An Autobiography. Originally published in 1974, The New York Times noted that for Davis, “writing [her autobiography] was not an act of self-discovery; it was an act of political communication.” In it, Davis explores her upbringing, evolving political consciousness, and emerging politics. We’ll discuss the book, Davis’ activism, and how the newly opened Angela’s Space in Marshall College’s Ocean View came to be named after Angela Davis.

Participants are welcome to attend one, two, or all of the book discussions. Students are invited to call or stop by the Thurgood Marshall Administration Building to reserve one of the books available for those committed to the Winter Quarter Reading discussion. For more information about the ThurGOOD READS, call Marshall College Student Affairs at 858-534-7395.

ThurGOOD READS is co-facilitated by Marshall College staff and student leaders. Winter Quarter 2017 co-facilitators are Izzy Narvaez, Class of 2018 and a double major in Critical Gender Studies and Political Science; Izzy also serves as a resident assistant in Empowerment House. The staff co-facilitators are Fnann Keflezighi, Assistant Director of Residential Life and a DOC grad with mad respect for the roots of our college, and Amber Vlasnik, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and former Women’s Studies faculty member who hearts Angela Davis’ writings and teachings.

This program is also in honor of Black History Month and Women’s History Month celebrations at UC San Diego.
