PDP Approach: The PDP models many effective teaching strategies through a well-designed inquiry activity, and requires that participants spend a great deal of time carefully and collaboratively designing their own inquiry activity. This will likely be the most time that participants will ever spend on designing a single activity because it is meant to be a transformative design and teaching experience that participants draw on for many years. The program includes discussions on education research and theory, including why and how teaching strategies work, so that PDP participants are equipped to select and adapt teaching strategies in new contexts. The PDP does not provide a recipe or a simple list of strategies to follow, but rather builds a foundation for participants to innovate from. It focuses on things that are hard to teach, like deep conceptual understanding and cognitive practices or reasoning skills. Finally, the PDP focuses on the small things that a single instructor can do, for example through the design of a learning activity or a brief interaction with a student, to make learning more equitable.

SECTION IV: PLANS for PDP TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Applying PDP ideas in a real teaching experience is required of all participants and ISEE provides placement on teaching teams of 3-4 people at UCSC and through regional chapters. Each participant teaches an activity in only one course/venue per PDP cycle. PDP TEACHING TEAMS Please see this link: http://isee.ucsc.edu/programs/pdp/teams/index.html and review the PDP teams from 2014 & 2015 for information on past teaching opportunities and venues. Teams for 2016 are not yet fully established and will not be exactly the same as previous years, but your responses in this section will help us to learn about your interests and see if there is a good fit with teams that are forming. In most cases participants are placed on a team in their region that minimizes or does not incur travel costs. There will be a few opportunities for participants to be team members for distant or out-of-state venues, in particular those with Astronomy/Engineering/Instrumentation based backgrounds.

PROPOSED CHAPTER TEACHING TEAM: Please tell us the teams specifically associated with your Regional Chapter that are best aligned with your interests, career goals, and likely availability.

PROPOSED CHAPTER TEACHING TEAM OUTSIDE MY REGION - Travel required Occasionally there is need for a particular background, or we have gaps in team placements at certain venues. If you would like to be considered for placement on a potential teaching team beyond your local Chapter region, please tell us which team is of interest, and describe any travel that would be required. Input n/a if there is not interest in a team outside your region.

    SECTION V: FUNDING

Many research grants, advisors/PI’s, departments, and other funding sources can support educational professional development activities and associated travel. Please consider whether you have access to such external funds to support your participation in the PDP (entirely or in part). If you have insufficient funding, please apply for an award from ISEE. We cannot guarantee financial support for all participants, but we would like to support as many participants as possible. Please contact us if you have questions or concerns. NOTE: Due to funding constraints, your chances of acceptance into the PDP are greatly improved if you have at least some amount of your own funding.

Please work through the costs of PDP participation that follow:

A PDP Cost Planning Worksheet is provided to assist you in this process, please download and work through this document before completing this section, http://isee.ucsc.edu/programs/pdp/2016/2016_PDP_CostPlanningWorksheet.pdf

    Program Registration

There is a fee for PDP workshops. The registration fee for the PDP is $3500, which covers all instructional and related program costs. ISEE has grants and receives institutional support that allows for some reduced, partial, or waived registration fees.
