[1] Apple began posting their own fragmentation chart. VentureBeat showed it side by side with information about Android and it sparked a lot of discussion around the topic. Question: Is this comparing Apples to apples, or are these two different scenarios entirely? Worth considering: Apple offers locked down hardware that limits the user, but the tradeoff is up-to-date software. Google offers an OS that runs on unlimited devices, and the tradeoff is managing compatability. Two different ethos entirely.
[2] Google Play for Education caught my attention at IO last year, with Google making a promise to bring Android into the fold in education. This by offering hardware options to educators and enabling developers to take part by offering their applicable apps to a heavily manicured storefront. Devs are now able to mark their apps for inclusion, and third party educators will comb through submissions to allow them, as well as mark them for things like subject, grade, and other metadata. Expect the program to launch in the US this fall.
[3] Microsoft has supposedly reached a deal with Japan's KLab to bring first party XBOX titles to iOS and Android, starting with Age of Empires. Other titles would follow, but none named at this point. Possible launch by end of 2013.
[4] Russell Holly posted on G+ early this month stating the importance of voting with our wallets on this kind of potential trend. Others feel like the majority of people don't care and its not likely to make a splash. Where do we stand?
[5] Galaxy NX Interchangeable lens camera, powered by Android. Combo of Galaxy S3 smartphone and NX20 camera with 4.8-inch HD touchscreen display. 1.6GHz quad-core processor, Android 4.2.2, features an APS-C class 20.3-megapixel image sensor. 16GB storage, 2GB RAM, WiFi, LTE. 1080p video, 4360mAh battery Fully compatible with Samsung's interchangeable lenses. No pricing/availability.
[6] Ativ Q 13.3" convertible laptop package, dual boot Windows 8 AND Android 4.2.2. SideSync allows you to share data between the two OSs. 3200 x 1800 screen, Intel Core i5 Haswell processor. S-pen.
[7] New SmartWatch2 the "perfect second screen to your smartphone" though a smartphone is not required as it will operate as a watch without that. Also works with non-Sony phones. Syncs notifications, music player, take picture, fitness apps, etc. 1.6-inch face at a 220-by-176 resolution. NFC pairing Water resistant 3-4 days of normal use (say Sony) Fits any standard 24mm wristband. NOT running a full build of Android. Pricing unknown. On sale around September. previous smartwatch was $150 ----------- Xperia Z Ultra 6.4" Full HD Xperia Z Ultra "phablet", sits between Xperia Z and Xperia Tablet Z. Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 2.2GHz quad-core chip. 8MP RFC. Any pencil can be used as stylus on screen. Launches later this year, no pricing or market announced.
[8] Barnes and Noble will stop manufacturing Nook in-house, due to big losses in Nook segment (34 percent revenue decline) which affected company revenues that dropped 7.4 percent from last year. B&N will create a partnership model for manufacturing tablets which will be co-branded with 3rd party manufacturers who have yet to be announced. It's E-ink readers will continue.
[9] Those of us who didn't back the OUYA on Kickstarter can now buy a unit from places like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop and Target. Though Amazon has already sold out for the time being. This is all a slight slap in the face for those who backed the Kickstarter who haven't yet received theirs. Founder Julie Uhrman says they are working overtime to fulfill those orders. Buy yours for $100 (console, controller, hdmi cable, batteries). Extra controller $50.
[10] Falcon Pro for Android reached its token limit and reset the tokens as we mentioned last week. The saga continues: Yet again, in under a day after resetting the API tokens, there was such a fast uptake of user tokens being reclaimed that the token limit was hit once again. The developer is taking time to investigate but promises Falcon Pro won't die.
