- How well is the Samsung Galaxy Gear watch selling?
- A report translated from KoreaBusiness led to other reports that Samsung has sold only 50,000 units worldwide since its release in September
- Samsung then gave a statement to Reuters that said Samsung Gear sales reached 800,000 and also said "It's the most sold wearable watch available in the market place...and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear,"
- Galaxy Gear compatibility is limited to the Note 3 and the Galaxy S4 (more to come)
- However, Korean publication Yonhap says the number Samsung is pushing is units shipped, NOT sold. Samsung Korea confirmed to The Verge that the figures do relate to shipments
- If you were curious about that 50k number, it apparently relates to South Korean sales
- Numbers for comparison: Pebble smartwatch has sold 190k units according to ZDNet. Samsung sold 5M Samsung Galaxy Note 3 units since September

tmYou can't beat politics with technology, says Pirate Bay cofounder Peter Sundehttp://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2013-11/18/peter-sunde-hemlis-political-apathy

.

G+ discussioonhttps://plus.google.com/103207773865797007066/posts/Y1dyBnFsoXC

.

Peter Sunde, co-founder The Pirate Bay, no longer there, running for Eueopean Parliament 2014
- He describes "nerds" as the "new elite" -- the very people who should be helping to fix the political system.
- He says that you are not going to stop the police from chasing you just because you have the best encryption in the world. "You actually need to go somewhere and vote and make sure you don't have corrupt police," he explains. "But there's a faith in technology as the saviour, as the new Messiah, and that's definitely not the case. I really don't see any revolution happening."
- Digital rights should be enshrined in law. "We don't really know what it's going to be like if we lose all these rights or what happens when the data about you starts to be abused. That's not going to happen until it's too late," he says.
- Points out we have dominant centralized services in every category, Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, Spotify…
Q: What do you think of Sunde’s call to arms?

.

- Best Buy and Sprint are running a promotion where if you're a student you'll get one year of unlimited talk, text, and 1GB of data
- The promotion started yesterday and runs to January 4th

Here's how it works:
- The student has to purchase the phone at "the Student Activated Price," which averages about $530
- Then they have to activate it on the Sprint Unlimited, My Way plan. So - you'll have to pay for the phone, $36 for the activation fee, taxes, etc.
- After that, you'll have to verify you're a student at Sprint's student verification site w/in 14 days of the purchase.
- Once you get verified - 1 year of unlimited talk, text w/ 1GB of data for free
- you can pay $10 per month for unlimited data.
- No need to sign up for a 2-year agreement. Students can get up to nine extra free years when a new line is added to the same account they're on

Q: Free Sprint service for a year after jumping through some hoops - will this lead to long-term Sprint customers?

In episode 885 you guys seemed confused about why people were reacting negatively to youtube comments and assumed it was because it was google forcing people to use a new system to post comments. While that may be part of it, the bigger problem is that the new comment system is flawed compared to the old one.

For starters, the new comment system does not limit the amount of characters per comment unlike the old one because these comments are linked to google+ posts. This has brought forward a new form of trolling where people would copy whole scripts or ebooks and post them as comments and if anyone unaware of this unknowingly clicks on the expand comment button, it stretches the comment page to an unreadable level.

[Under] the old commenting system, if a url was detected, [it] would not allow users to post the comment until it was gone. It was still possible to post URLs by disguising it but it would at least require a user to actively type the link out.

However, the new comment system takes away these protections and allows URLs to be inputted directly and automatically converts them into clickable links.

This has led to shock sites like goatse being posted into comments and content creators like TotalBiscuit afraid that this may expand to malware links.

I'm unsure if these google has responded to these concerns yet but these were a lot of the major issues that made content providers disable comments in the first place and those petitions started.

When people said that google made youtube commenting worse, they tended to mean these things.

Anyways that's my input into this matter. I love your show and thanks for everything you guys do.

- Peter
