ALERT 1

.

[me] Comcast’s mail servers were hacked on February 5. The hacker group NullCrew FTS posted the details of their exploit on Pastebin, along with a list of Comcast’s mail servers, for 24 hours. During that time, Comcast reportedly didn’t tell customers. At least 34 of their servers were breached, according to reports. That enabled any hacker to have their way with the mail servers. And, in fact, users reported slowdowns, crashes and other problems during that time. http://www.zdnet.com/change-your-passwords-comcast-hushes-minimizes-serious-hack-7000026118/

.

.

* Comcast customers have not been told to change passwords, but they should

* Unclear whether any data stolen

* Initial reports were that passwords were stolen, but there’s no evidence

[sl] Over the weekend, the developer of Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen tweeted that he'd be removing the game from the App Store. Flappy Bird has been the number one downloaded free app on App Store for almost a month. and was averaging $50,000/day in revenue from in-app ads. Well, today's the day - Flappy Bird no longer shows up in search, developer's app listing, and Top Free games. http://www.macrumors.com/2014/02/09/flappy-bird-removed/https://twitter.com/dongatory

[me] Douglas MacMillan is a San Francisco-based technology reporter for the Wall Street Journal. * @dmac1

Q: You reported that Yahoo’s 2010 search deal with Microsoft has been a disappointment for Yahoo. In what way?

Q: Mayer tried to acquire Yelp for $500 million in 2009 when she led search at Google. Why does she think so highly of Yelp?

Q: Yahoo seems to buy a lot of companies, and partner with others for technology. Why don’t they build more of their own technology? Is the buy or partner strategy really working?

[sl] ASUS's VivoTab Note 8, an 8-inch Windows 8.1 tablet with support for Wacom pen input, has gone live in Microsoft's US store- the 32GB model anyway- for $329, which is a little higher than the $299 price tag it had when shown off at CES. But do you even have room in your heart for a tablet? Zal Bilimoria, a partner at venture capital firm Andreesen Horowitz wrote in an opinion piece published by Re/code over the weekend that consumers are losing interest in tablets all together.http://www.engadget.com/2014/02/10/asus-vivotab-note-8-now-available/

.

- only 12 percent of tablets have cellular connections, instantly making them non-mobile devices
- At Netflix, we witnessed a dramatic increase in phone usage for the streaming service — all that binge-watching of “Sons of Anarchy” and “House of Cards.” The reason was obvious: As phone apps improved in terms of quality and speed, users abandoned their tablets for the device in their pocket that could access the Web anywhere and anytime from Wi-Fi or cellular connections.
