[me] Longtime Google veteran Susan Wojcicki will head the company’s YouTube unit, according to a scoop in The Information. Wojcicki is currently senior vice president of advertising and was Google's employee No. 16 at Google. In fact, Google was launched in her garage in 1998. She's also the sister of Anne Wojcicki, founder and CEO of 23andMe and the wife of Google co-founder Sergey Brin. https://www.theinformation.com/Google-Looks-to-Ads-Executive-Susan-Wojcicki-as-Next-YouTube-Chief

[me] Joining us to talk about the story is Jessica Lessin, founder and editor-in-chief of The Information (at the information dot com). Jessica also broke the story, along with senior reporter Amir Efrati. * theinformation.com

Q: Congratulations on another great exclusive. Why do you think Google might put their top ad executive in charge of YouTube?

Q: You said in your story that YouTube isn’t able to attract enough ads to keep up with the huge volume of videos posted.

Q: Is Salar Kamangar being snubbed here?

[sl] The Nikkei Asian Review is reporting that Sony is in talks to sell its PC operations arm to investment fund Japan Industrial Partners, and shift its hardware focus to smartphones. Here's the alleged plan: the fund will establish a new company to which Sony will sell its entire PC business. That sale price is estimated at 40 billion yen to 50 billion yen ($391 million to $489 million). The new company would continue to make and sell PCs under the Vaio brand. Sony will take only a small stake in the firm, and will withdraw operations from most countries and regions.http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Deals/Sony-looking-to-sell-PC-business-to-investment-fund

.

- PC business has a staff of roughly 1,000. majority will be taken on by the new firm, but some others will be transferred to other departments within Sony. The parties are discussing having Sony's PC site in Nagano Prefecture continue handling R&D and production under the new company.
- The sale of the PC business will result in disposal losses, pushing Sony into a net loss for the first time in two years for the year ending March 31 -- a reversal from the projected 30 billion yen in profit. With TV and digital camera operations languishing, its electronics business is performing below expectations.
- Vaio brand of PCs launched in 1996. Its annual PC shipments peaked at 8.7M units but are now projected to fall to 5.8M units this fiscal year. Sony was the ninth-ranked PC maker in the world with a 1.9% share of all PCs shipped during the January-September period of 2013, according to U.S. research firm IDC.

[th] Google’s European antitrust problems may soon be over. The company agreed to change search results to avoid a possible $5 billion fine. Google is willing to display links to three competitors next to links to its own services. It would also label its own links. The European commission will decide whether to make the change legally binding after talking to Google’s competitors to see if it satisfies them. European regulators started investigating Google in 2010 after complaints that it favored its own web sites and services in search results. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bftb-LPIMAAjW0Y.jpg:large

[me] Part of Silicon Valley’s power and phone infrastructure was attacked last April. The attack was covered in the press last year. But an exclusive report in The Wall Street Journal has pieced together a detailed timeline of the incident, and it’s worse than previously reported. The attack started after midnight on April 16. Some unknown number of people broke into an underground vault south of San Jose and cut telephone cables. Then, snipers fired at the nearby Metcalf power substation for 19 minutes, taking out 17 giant transformers that relay power to Silicon Valley. A blackout was avoided because officials re-routed power around the site and boosted electrical production from other nearby power plants. Nobody was caught. http://online.wsj.com/news/article_email/SB10001424052702304851104579359141941621778-lMyQjAxMTA0MDAwNDEwNDQyWj

* Former energy regulator Jon Wellinghoff is calling it a terrorist attack.

* US Navy experts said it looked like a quote: “professional job.”

* No fingerprints on shell casings

* Best spots to shoot from were marked in advance using rocks

* The FBI disagrees

* But even if it wasn’t done as a test or “dress rehearsal” for an attack, it exposes the risk to infrastructure from physical attacks on such substations.

* The event shocked the utility industry, which scrambled to change their security

[sl] You know what's cool? Six billion hours of video viewed every month on Youtube... you know what isn't cool? Fake eyeballs. Google has announced a crackdown on "fraudulent views" on YouTube, from channels who inflate their view counts. YouTube has always audited videos in an effort to try to spot inflated counts, but the company is taking it more seriously, accourding to YouTube software engineer Phillip Pfeiffenberger.
It's a quirk of the system that YouTube's parent company is driving traffic to those third-party businesses.
http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/feb/05/youtube-fake-views-counts-google

.

- in the past YT would scan views for spam after they occurred, now will periodically validate the video’s view count, removing fraudulent views as new evidence comes to light. approach shouldn't affect more than a minuscule fraction of videos on YouTube. "we believe it’s crucial to improving the accuracy of view counts and maintaining the trust of our fans and creators."
- search 'buy YouTube views' in Google, and hundreds of companies show up, including some paying Google to advertise their services using its AdWords system.
- YouTube's motivation the crackdown is about making its service more appealing to advertisers. also wants to make $ from channel-owners building their audiences by paying to use its TrueView ads system. TrueView: you're charged only when a viewer has chosen to watch your ad

[sl] Hi TNT crew,

It's been widely reported that John Thompson was reluctant to become Chairman of the Board at Microsoft. I wonder if as part of his negotiations to become CEO, Satya Nadella was promised to also be named the Chairman of Microsoft in a year or two if he does well. Having both jobs would give Nadella a lot of leverage and independence from Gates and Ballmer, something that was a problem for many CEO candidates. - Milton

[??] The late Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs loved Sony. So much so that he tried to convince the company to make a Sony Vaio laptop that ran Mac OS. It happened in 2001. Former president Kunitake Ando told a Japanese reporter yesterday that he met Jobs in Hawaii while Sony executives were playing golf. At the end of the golf course, Jobs and his Apple entourage were waiting with a Sony Vaio running Mac OS. Sony turned them down, because they believed their Windows-based Vaio line was about to take off. http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/5/5380832/sony-vaio-apple-os-x-steve-jobs-meeting-report
