[me] Satya Nadella is Microsoft’s new CEO. Nadella has been with Microsoft for 22 years. Founder and former CEO Bill Gates will step down as chairman, and take an advisory role to Nadella. Board member John Tompson, the lead independent director, will become chairman. Current CEO Steve Ballmer, who may soon be the company’s largest shareholder, will remain on the board. Nadella starts work as CEO today. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T8JwNZBJ_wI&t=19shttp://windowsitpro.com/paul-thurrotts-wininfo/its-official-microsoft-names-satya-nadella-ceo

Q: Elise: You wrote a piece this morning called “8 Things Worth Knowing About Microsoft's New CEO, Satya Nadella” Can you tell a few interesting things about Satya Nadella?

Q: Nadella has deep experience in the enterprise and in cloud computing. Is he the right choice for a company struggling in the consumer space and in mobile?

Q: Nadella has never run a company before. Do you think this inexperience will be a problem?

Q: Nadella is only Microsoft’s third CEO in 39 years. The two previous CEOs are on the board. Gates has a dominating presence, and will be an advisor. Ballmer may soon be the company’s largest shareholder. Will these two outsized personalities let Nadella do his job?

[sl] Bill Gates is giving up a seat, but also taking on a bigger role at Microsoft. He's stepping down from his position as chairman today and will take up the role of technology advisor to new CEO, Satya Nadella. Though Gates has said multiple times he'd rather work on philanthropic projects than Microsoft, Nadella apparently requested Gates' assistance specifically, and Gates explained a little more in a somewhat awkward video uploaded to Microsoft's YouTube channel. [[ROLL SOT]]http://www.theverge.com/2014/2/4/5377226/bill-gates-steps-down-microsoft-chairman-named-tech-advisor

.

Gates quote: "I'm thrilled that Satya has asked me to step up, substantially increasing the time that I spend at the company. I'll have over a third of my time available to meet with product groups, and it'll be fun to define this next round of products working together."http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=M5BhQVuRcTk#t=1

.

[me] Joining us to talk about Gates' new role is Ed Bott. Ed is a long-time technology columnist and author who has written more than 25 books about Microsoft products.

.

Q: gates best served on product side, or a PR spin to remove as chair?
- Gates is Microsoft’s largest individual shareholder with a 4.3% stake

Q: Microsoft announced that Gates would spend “a third of his time” on Microsoft.

[th] John Thompson will replace Bill Gates as Chairman, though Gates will remain on the board. Thompson has been on the board for two years, and he was in charge of the effort to find a new CEO. Thompson is the CEO of Virtual Instruments, a cloud company. He’s also an investor. He may be best known as the former CEO of Symantec, a position he held for ten years. Before that he worked at IBM. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o3K5lloQTT8&feature=youtu.be&t=14shttp://www.zdnet.com/meet-microsofts-new-board-chairman-john-thompson-7000025944/

Q: Can you tell us more about Thompson and his background in technology?

Q: Thompson is Microsoft’s second board chairman. What’s it going to be like running board meetings with Gates on one side and Ballmer on the other?

Q: Thompson is a business and enterprise guy. Nadella is, too. Does this leadership team have what it takes to succeed in the consumer space, gaming, content and gadgets?

[me] Steve Ballmer steps down today after running the company for 14 years. When Ballmer took over from Bill Gates in early 2000, the company was flying high, with a record-breaking market capitalization. Today, Microsoft’s market cap is a fraction of that. Ballmer will remain on the board. And he’s expected to surpass Bill Gates some time this year and become the company’s largest shareholder. http://youtu.be/jy8Qhcf_moA

.

[me] With us to talk about the reign of Ballmer is Paul Thurrott. Paul writes Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows and co-host’s TWiT’s Windows Weekly show. * winsupersite.comhttp://windowsitpro.com/paul-thurrotts-wininfo/its-official-microsoft-names-satya-nadella-ceo

.

Q: Was Ballmer an effective CEO?

Q: Why was Microsoft never really able to reach its own goals in the mobile space?

Q: What kind of role will Ballmer have in on the Microsoft board?

Q: What was Ballmer’s greatest accomplishment as CEO?
