[me] Google has agreed to sell its Motorola Mobility division to Lenovo. The 2.91 billion dollar sale comes just two years after Google acquired Motorola for 12.5 billion dollars. Google will keep about 15 thousand of Motorola’s patents and Lenovo will take the remaining 2 thousand. http://recode.net/2014/01/29/its-official-lenovo-is-buying-motorola-from-google-for-2-91-billion/http://recode.net/2014/01/29/its-official-lenovo-is-buying-motorola-from-google-for-2-91-billion/http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2014/01/lenovo-to-acquire-motorola-mobility.html

QUESTIONS:
* How will this deal affect Motorola users and fans?
* Android community?
* Do you think the Motorola sale was tied to negotiation outcomes with Samsung over patents and the Magazine UX interface?
* Samsung can’t be thrilled that Lenovo is getting this boost.
* Google’s biggest business problem right now is China. It’s search engine market share is only 1.6 percent. And only 3.5 percent of Android devices in China use Google’s Play Store. Do you have any information on whether as part of the deal Lenovo will offer Google apps and services inside China?

POINTS
* Google with a stake of around 5 per cent in the Chinese hardware maker.
* factory in Texas for assembling its Moto X handsets
Lenovo is set to pay $660m in cash and $750m in stock at the time the deal is closed, with a further $1.5bn payment in the form of a three-year promissory note.

[sl] On the surface, Google’s acquisition and sale of Motorola sounds bad -- Buying it for 12.5 billion dollars and then selling it for 2.91 billion? -But what Google sold to Lenovo is a subset of what they purchased. For starters, Google sold Motorola Home the - TV set-top box business - for $2.6 billion to a company called Arris a little over a year ago. Google also kept around 15 thousand patents -- remember, the acquisition was originally viewed as mostly about patents. And finally, Google is keeping Motorola’s advanced research and development group headed by former DARPA head Regina Dugan, which is working on the project Ara (a modular smartphone handset) electronic tattoos and microchip pills, and other projects.Start at 0:30

.

- Google has continued to work with other handset makers- like LG, on Nexus phones and tablets that are Google-specified, but made by others.

* Can stop angering partners (except Samsung)
* The division lost $645m in the first nine months of last year
* Google valued Motorola’s patents at $5.5 billion
* In actual cash, Google’s net loss is about $3.24 billion for Motorola Mobility (After Arris deal, etc.
* Dugan will report to Sundar Pichai

[me] While the focus has been on how the dead affects Google and Motorola, it’s worth taking a look at what it means for Lenovo. Based in Beijing, Lenovo is the world’s biggest PC maker by unit sales. And it’s an empire built on acquisitions. Lenovo IBM's personal computer business and its popular ThinkPad line in 2005 and agreed to acquire IBM’s Intel-based server business in 2014. The company is planning aggressive growth in global smartphone sales. The company is already the #4 or #5 handset maker in the world, thanks mostly to low-end smartphones sold in China. The Motorola buy makes Lenovo #3 after Samsung and Apple. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-6452_7-57618047/five-ways-lenovo-could-outdo-google-in-remaking-motorola/

QUESTIONS:
* You wrote a piece this morning called “Five ways Lenovo could outdo Google in remaking Motorola”
* Why has Lenovo been unusually successful with acquisitions?
* How much of this is about Lenovo’s access to national markets and carriers?

POINTS
* This makes Lenovo #1 in PCs and #3 in smartphones.
* National markets: Motorola has distribution relationships with more than 50 mobile carriers
* Lenovo bought IBM’s industry-standard server business for $2.3 billion last week.
* The deal “gives Lenovo a brand name, it’s very similar to when they bought the IBM PC business – that’s worked very well”, said Ken Dulaney, an analyst at Gartner.

[sl] A new, $1.99 app arrives in the Apple app store today called CARROT Fit. The app uses hilarious and rude insults to shame you into getting in shape. It uses the robot speech-to-text engine built into iOS. You enter your weight. And if you don’t, it will enter it for you, and you won’t like what it enters. Then, you choose an avatar. If your avatar doesn’t match the weight you entered, the app mocks you until you pick a more accurate one. The app lets you earn carrots by sticking with your fitness goals, and insulting and harassing you to slimness.
