[me] And the world’s fastest-growing social network is… Instagram! At least accoding to new research by the GlobalWebIndex published today. The site has grown by 23% in the last six months. The biggest social networks over all are Facebook, YouTube, Google+, Twitter and LinkedIn, in that order. To me, the shocker that jumped out from this survey is that Google’s Orkut is the #9 biggest social network, edging out Yahoo’s Tumblr. Another stunner: Two-thirds of users say they use mobile devices to access social networks. http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/21/instagram-is-the-fastest-growing-social-site-globally-mobile-devices-rule-over-pcs-for-social-access/

[me] With us today to talk about all this is Jason Mander, who is head of Trends at GlobalWebIndex the author of the GlobalWebIndex study, who is Skyping in from London. Thank you for joining us, Jason. URLGUEST: Jason Mander, @globalwebindex

* Excludes China where some social networks are blocked
* Facebook and Instagram are likely to be merged in the future, as may Google+, YouTube and Orkut.

* Sina Weibo dominates China with 80% penetration for registered accounts and 58% for active users

[sl] Well, Intel’s OnCue TV service is finally going somewhere...Verizon announced today it's acquring Intel Media, a group of cloud TV assets that includes OnCue, and which puts Verizon in direct competition with former partner Comcast. Verizon is expected to integrate OnCue with its FiOS fiber-optic networks and deliver “over the top” TV to “any device.” OnCue is designed to offer live TV as well as on-demand programming.http://techcrunch.com/2014/01/21/verizon-ramps-up-tv-ambitions-buys-oncue-and-the-rest-of-intel-media-from-intel/

.

- OnCue considered a failure; never got off the ground. deal the range of $500M - 1st reported in November 2013.
- Verizon Q4 earnings later today - timing of announcement might be to offset bad news
- Verizon bought content delivery network Edgecast for more than $350M, bought UpLynk for uploading and encoding video.
- the point: helping with search and discovery, interactivity and multiscreen services to put Verizon ahead of Comcast/other competitors
- Once the transaction is closed, Verizon expected to integrate IP-based TV services with FiOS video to reduce ongoing deployment costs and 'differentiate' FiOS from traditional cable television features.

[me] Speaking of TV over the Internet, New research reveals how quickly viewers are moving from premium TV to online streaming video content. NPD Group found a 6-percent drop in subscriptions to HBO, Showtime and other premium TV channels in the past two years, with a 4-percent rise in subscription video-on-demand service, including Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu Plus.http://www.amazon.com/Prime-Instant-Video/b?node=2676882011

“cord shaving” bigger trend than “cord cutting.” Only 10% households are “cord cutters”; though 40% have thought about it. subscription video on demand (SVOD) makes up 67% of all digital video transactions in US, also fastest growing

SVOD services now reach more than a quarter (27%) of U.S. households, HBO and other premium channels, in contract, reach about one-third (32%)

digital-video transactions rose 3 share points since 2012, reaching 70 percent of all home-video transactions in 2013.

2013 SVOD made up 71 percent of all digital-video transactions, and it continued to grow faster than all other digital acquisition types.

[me] Is email on the way out? A former Facebook engineering executive named Dustin Moskovitz thinks so, according to a new piece in WIRED. So he founded a startup called Asana. Moskovitz claims that the world has reached “peak email” -- that’s it’s starting a decline to obsolescence. But a recent McKinsey & Co. survey says email is nearly 40 times more effective than Facebook and Twitter combined. Of course, that’s for marketers. Still, email is in fact growing in usage, not declining. http://www.wired.com/business/2014/01/next-big-thing-missed-facebook-co-founder-says-email/http://www.entrepreneur.com/article/230949

.

* 182 billion emails sent each day (Radicati Group)
* 67 trillion messages a year
* New accounts are expected to grow by 6 percent in each of the next four years
* Is “email bankruptcy the answer?” Filters? Plug-ins? Gmail’s inbox sorting?
* Benefits: 1) universal; 2) backup and searching; 3) asynchronous; 4) attachments and links;
* Email creates anxiety; most don’t manage it

[sl] EMAIL: on google glass while driving:
I was listening to 925 and you were talking about Google glass and driving laws. We don't need new laws, we just need to enforce the existing ones. There is a law against distracted driving. If you are distracted while driving, you get a ticket. It could be glass, your phone our even the radio. There is no need for extra laws. - Jon

[sl] After debuting at the Tokyo Auto Show back in November, Toyota's FV2 has made an appearance at the north american international auto show. It's a very TRON-like single-seater electric car covered in mirrored material that has the ability to display digital graphics. Cameras on either side of the FV2 capture video and then display the graphics depending on what movement they see. With electric car battery technology where it is, we probably won't see car art installation panels on the road anytime soon, but a fascinating "concept" indeed.http://www.psfk.com/2014/01/toyota-fv2-concept-detroit-auto-show.html#!sMPz8VIDEO
