[me] The New York Times reported yesterday that the The National Security Agency has implanted software in nearly 100,000 computers around the world that allows the US to spy on those computers, even when they’re not connected to the Internet, in some cases.

.

* Information in Times’ article mostly appeared in December Der Spiegel report

* This is old-school spy craft with new gadgets; not confused with Constitutional issues in US

* Short-sighted because it will take away two things we need: 1) allies; 2) money

* Necessary to prevent another 911

* Cold war might be alternative to hot war (China, Iran)

* The alternative to intelligence is ignorance

* Erase’s America’s upper hand over China’s spying

[sl] Today, Spain’s Geeksphone and Washington-based Silent Circle launched a "secure" Android smartphone called the “Blackphone.” It's a carrier- and vendor-independent smartphone that's supposed to give people and businesses the ability to make and receive secure phone calls, exchange secure texts, transfer and store files, and video chat more securely than any other phone.

.

- powered by a security-oriented Android™ build named PrivatOS,
- big names behind it: Phil Zimmermann, creator of PGP; Javier Aguera, co-founder of Geeksphone; Jon Callas, co-founder of PGP Inc. and CTO of Silent Circle; Rodrigo Silva-Ramos, co-founder of Geeksphone; and Mike Janke, CEO of Silent Circle and former US Navy SEAL.
- Will be unveiled at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona February 24 where the company will start taking pre-orders.
- No official ship date or price announced.
- Is this really necessary?
- Is it really secure? Encrypted calls and messages need encryption on both sides.
- Marketing it more for privacy than security; emphasising mass appeal
- Using one could put you on the radar

[sl] HP's back, baby! The company has re-entered the smartphone market with two Android “phablets”...yep, I'm calling them phablets, I don't make the rules...but this time, for the Indian market. One's called the HP Slate6 VoiceTab and HP Slate7 VoiceTab. Ron Coughlin, VP for the consumer PC business, tells Recode.net that HP chose India and not North America or Europe to debut the devices because of market preferences and because the market for phones and smart devices in India is growing.

.

- HP CEO Meg Whitman said last September that “HP has to do a smartphone.”
- “phablets,” are smartphones with the form factor of a smaller-sized tablet. It’s the fastest-growing segment of smart devices in India.
- market research firm IDC lowered its 2013 worldwide sales forecast for traditional tablets by 6M units in part because phablet sales are eating into them.
- already in India: Samsung has just over 15% of all Indian smartphone sales in the third quarter. Nokia's #2 with just under 15%. Two local brands, Micromax and Karbonn, have 10% and 9% respectively. China’s Lenovo and Huawei also offer phablet devices
- Shipping in February
- HP always made bad decisions about smartphones: - Choosing Compaq’s iPaq instead of Jornada- Dropping Palm in 2011 instead of developing it
- HP still top PC brand in India: 32% of India’s PC market share (IDC)
- Expect future releases in the US, Europe, Asia
- Quad-core processor; 1280 x 720 and 1280 x 800
- India strategy: market based on unlocked phones with less carrier control
- US market saturated

[me] If you think wearable computers and smart watches are overkill, here's a product you might actually like. The all-silicon Verb watch does only two things. First, it tells the time. Second, it stores up to 4 gigabytes of data. The USB plug doubles as the watch clasp, which holds the watch on your wrist. The Verb watch costs $56. http://www.verbwatch.com/

[sl] The new Mac Pro is impressive, expensive, and, let's be honest, looks like a trash can. So a fellow in Germany decided to take it a step further, and built a Hackintosh out of a trashcan. Just look at this beautiful Mac Pro, built from an Authentics Lunar bathroom trash can that comes with its own matching toilet brush. It may not be the real deal, but it's certainly an E for effort. http://www.cultofmac.com/262452/mac-pro-hackintosh-made-actual-trashcan/
