me[me] A federal appeals court today ruled against the FCC -- and also its rules for net neutrality. The United States Court of Appeals in D.C. ruled said that the FCC doesn’t have the authority to impose its Open Internet rules on Internet providers like Verizon because of how the FCC itself classifies such companies -- the FCC does not classify Internet providers as a common-carrier service like telephone companies are. If the ruling were to stand, it would mean Internet providers could charge rich web sites more to provide faster service, while throttling the little guys. The FCC may appeal. http://transition.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/openinternet.pdfhttp://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304049704579320500441593462

sl[sl] Motorola might start letting you build your own tablets, at least the way you can with a Moto X. Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside tells the blog Pocket-lint that the company is considering offering tablets that can be customized on the Moto Maker web site. Buyers could choose colors, materials, and specs, such as the amount of storage and accessories. http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/126539-moto-maker-customised-motorola-tablet-under-consideration

me[me] Evleaks, who often gets his hands on leaked photos of prototype smartphones, posted a picture today that’s suppose to be Nokia’s secret Android phone, code-named ‘Normandy.’ The picture appears to show a home screen with Microsoft’s Metro UI on top of Android. Wow. Android with a Windows Phone interface. Microsoft is currently in the process of buying Nokia’s Devices & Services business. Nokia owns 92% of the global Windows Phone market. http://bgr.com/2014/01/14/nokia-normandy-photo-windows-phone-interface/

sl[sl] Oh good, a New Jersey story that doesn't involve a bridge. This ohe's about the New Jersey state government shuuting down... drone abuse. The State Senate approved a bill that restricts how police, firefighters and other first responders are allowed to use drones. For starters: No weapons on drones. Also: Police have to get a warrant before using a drone for surveillance. And they have to delete any information gathered after two weeks unless it’s part of an official criminal investigation. The bill now goes to Governor Chris Christie for signature.START AT 0:44

me[me] Don’t tell Leo, but now employers can pay employee salaries using Bitcoin. A company called BitPay, which claims to be the world’s largest payment processor for virtual currencies, released a beta payroll API. It enables employers to offer a net payroll deduction paid in bitcoin to accompany each paycheck. The service is currently available only in the United States. https://bitpay.com/http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140113006504/en/BitPay-Announces-Bitcoin-Payroll-API#.UtTT9mRDtvY

sl[sl] In more Motorola news, the company launched its Moto X phone in Europe today. It comes in wide range of colors, like black or white. Interestingly, the European model won't offer any Moto Maker customization options like the US version... and it's more expensive. An unlocked Moto X in Europe costs up to $624 unlocked. It launched in the US at $599 and eventually dropped to $399. Phones ship in France, Britain and Germany in February. http://www.motorola.com/us/FLEXR1-1/Moto-X/FLEXR1.htmlhttp://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/hardware/flagship-motorola-smartphone-moto-x-headed-for-europe/articleshow/28778767.cms

me[me] Apple doesn’t use its iBeacon indoor positioning system for transactions yet, but most Apple-watchers expect them to. Yesterday, a company called iMobile3 beat Apple to it. The company announced iBeacon support for its PassMarket product. PassMarket is a search engine for collecting mobile wallet “passes” from merchants. PassMarket’s system makes brick-and-mortar shopping like shopping online. Customers using the system can “check out” with their purchases by simply walking up to the register -- iBeacon knows they’re standing there thanks to a partnership with beacon maker Twocanoes. Customers can pay with their PassMarket wallet app on iPhone without using a credit card. PassMarket also says their system is more secure than, say, Target’s, because credit card data is stored in a single, secure vault at the payment processor, not at the store. https://www.passmarket.com/consumershttp://www.pymnts.com/news/businesswire-feed/2014/january/13/imobile3-and-twocanoes-partner-to-bring-location-based-offers-and-payment-to-retailers-20140113006102

sl[sl] Google now makes it easy to find images that you have the right to use on your blog. A new menu item under Search Tools lets you sort images you've pulled up in a search by usage rights, such as "labeled for resuse" or "labeled for commerical reuse". Microsoft added a similar feature to Bing last July. GO HERE, CLICK “SEARCH TOOLS” THEN “USAGE RIGHTS” TO SHOW MENU

me[me] It just got easier for people to make augmented reality content. The Spanish augmented reality company Catchoom today launched a new platform called CraftAR. It lets you link digital assets to real-world objects - for example, additional information about an object that’s displayed when a user is looking at that object. It also enables the creation of 3D models through scanning real objects and tools for embeding augmented reality experiences into mobile apps. START AT 1:15

sl[sl] YouTube today brought back the central inbox for video comments. Users complained loudly recently when Google switched YouTube to a Google+ centric comment system and removed the central inbox. So Google “fast-tracked the development of a new comment management page that lets you see, respond to and moderate your comments all in one place,” according to Google. START AT 0:07

me[me] As we reported on our evening show, Tech News 2night, Google agreed yesterday to buy smart thermostat maker Nest for $3.2 billion. Some news outlets falsely reported that Google had completed the acquisition, when in fact the deal is subject to regulatory approval. Nest co-founder Tony Fadell, who will keep the title of Nest CEO even as a Google employee, told reporters yesterday that Nest won’t give Google access to Nest user data, nor will Nest stop supporting the iOS. (Nest is sold in Apple retail and online stores.) And, by the way, if you’re wondering what Google might want with a thermostat company, Fadell told one interviewer that Nest’s core technologies are: “communications, algorithms, sensors and user experience, running over a network to the cloud.” Now that sounds like a Google business. http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2014/01/13/google-and-nest-two-companies-in-the-business-of-understanding-you/

sl[sl] San Francisco startup Airware has completed a successful field trial it ran at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, where endangered black and white rhinos live.
- Airware partnered with the conservancy to use drones to monitor the land to protect rhinos against poachers.
- 2 week test. Airware used 3 kinds of drones: two fixed-wing aircraft and one flexible wing. Airware founder and CEO Jonathan Downey: "They were designed to operate completely autonomously, well out of the line of sight of the pilot," .
- way cheaper than using small aircraft, can cover more ground
- The drones use infrared cameras for nighttime video and electro-optical cameras during the day. they fly low, between 100 and 400 feet"Using infrared we can easily spot a campfire being used by poachers, who often come in to the park at night. The level of detail is such that we can see an elephant's trunk change from white to black after he takes a drink of cold water."
- Ol Pejeta used Indiegogo to raise $46,000 for the Airware test, but the conservancy doesn't intend to pay for continued service. "This is not something we think will turn into a huge revenue stream for us," Downey admits. more research

me[me] A new glassware app called DriveSafe uses Google Glass’s sensors to detect when you might be falling asleep, and will buzz you using the bone conduction speaker (or mono earbud) to keep you going. Which raises the question: Is Google Glass safe to wear while driving? By the end of the year, there will probably be more than a dozen smart glass products on the market. Almost banned in the UK last summer (even though the beta is restricted to US users only). Recently, the UK’s Department for Transport has met with google and “softened its stance” on Google Glass and may allow it. A woman in San Diego named Cecilia Abadie was ticketed for wearing Google Glass while driving. (She was also ticketed for speeding.)http://www.drivesafeforglass.com/

I remember seeing some news a month or so ago about DIRECTV and the NFL being close to another exclusivity deal. Since then (Dec. 12-13) … crickets.
What are the odds Google, Apple or both are being quiet about going after Sunday Ticket?
On a related note, what do you all think the odds are of Aereo being bought by either Apple or Google if the SCOTUS rules that Aereo is legal?
With Aereo and the NFL, Google TV or Apple TV becomes a REAL game changer.

me[me] We reported yesterday on the comments of Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary, who said Google is working on a new flight comparison tool. But in a statement, Google denied the project and said that O'Leary's comments refer to the company's existing Flight Search tool, which expanded to the UK last year.

sl[sl] Internet entrepreneur Kim Dotcom can't run for a seat in New Zealand's senate because he's still a German national, but says he still intends to found a political party in his adopted home of New Zealand to contest the country's upcoming general election, and that the organization will be called "Megaparty." Dotcom says he's just founding and funding the party, and tweeted that he has hopes of "mak[ing] politics exciting," by "activat[ing] non-voters, the youth, the Internet electorate."http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/kim-dotcom-launches-megaparty-compete-670740
