me[me] Yahoo accidentally distributed malware to millions through malicious advertising posted on the Yahoo.com site. The discovery was disclosed by Dutch security firm Fox-IT Saturday. The malware exploited vulnerabilities in Java, redirecting users to another site to install even more malware. In a statement, Yahoo said the attack occurred January 3 on European sites only -- mostly Britain, France and Romania, according to Fox-IT -- and did not affect Mac or mobile users. Late last night a Yahoo spokesperson told Tech News Today that in fact the ads were served between December 31 and January 3, not just on the single day. This new information means 4 times more people may have been exposed than previously reported. Fox-IT estimated that some 27,000 actual infections occurred per hour during the attack for a possible total of 2.5 million infections. http://blog.fox-it.com/2014/01/03/malicious-advertisements-served-via-yahoo/http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2534153/Millions-visitors-Yahoo-com-hit-huge-malware-attack.html

sl[sl] The Pirate Bay is built on peer-to-peer file sharing, that much we know. But the site itself may soon be accessed via P2P, which means you wouldn't need domain names or server farms to access it, and it would make the site harder for ISPs to block. We heard back in December that the Pirate Bay planned to unveil this new system, and finally got details yesterday. So here's the deal - it's based on the peer-to-peer distribution of a site’s indexed data, then a new browser-like client displays that data locally, according to a “Pirate Bay insider” quoted on the TorrentFreak blog. The new platform will support The Pirate Bay and other torrent sites and will be released as an application and plug-ins for both Firefox and Chrome. http://thepiratebay.sehttp://torrentfreak.com/how-the-pirate-bay-plans-to-beat-censorship-for-good-140105/

me[me] Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may soon have more Microsoft stock than founder and chairman Bill Gates! The reason is that Gates sells an average of 80 million shares each year in order to fund his philanthropic organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, according to an article in Computerworld. At current rates of divestment, Gates’ shares could drop below the roughly 333 million shares owned by Ballmer as early as this summer, making Ballmer Microsoft’s biggest shareholder. Don’t worry about Gates, though. He’s doing fine. In fact, Gates’ net worth increased by nearly 16 billion dollars in 2013, making him once again the richest human on the planet with a net worth of 78.5 billion dollars. sl[sl] The next second screen is ON your screen....A new TV adapter called the SeeSpace InAir Smart HDMI adapter showed up at CES yesterday. Based on what you're watching, it lays related Internet content on the screen on top of your current content, and pulls in related social content. You control the experience via an iOS or Android app, or with in-air gestures through an Xbox or Leap Motion. And if you’ve got a 3D TV, the contextual information seems like it's floating between you and the screen. SeeSpace claims we'll see the adaptor hit retail stories in the second half of the year for $99. me[me] Consumer drone maker Parrot unleashed two crazy smartphone-controlled gadgets at CES yesterday. One is the flying MiniDrone, which is a tiny version of the AR Drone quadricopter, but with optional wheels that enable it to “roll” across floors, walls and even ceilings. The other is the Sumo, which can roll, jump three feet high and do other tricks while it zaps live video back to the controlling phone or tablet. Parrot told the press at CES that both products would ship in 2014, but they didn't announce pricing. sl[sl] Serial product leaker evleaks says the rumored Asus Padfone X is coming to AT&T in the US, even though it hasn't even been announced yet. What we do know is that it's a smartphone that docks into a tablet, and rumors really got going after the Padfone X was found in AnTuTu, a benchmarking database, back in December. Sources say the X version will run Android KitKat 4.4 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor and performs well in tests. This would be the first Padfone targeting the US market. The official announcement is expected as early as today. http://www.phonearena.com/news/Asus-Padfone-X-with-Android-4.4-KitKat-spotted-in-benchmark-might-be-released-soon_id50388

me[me] Carmaker Hyundai (HYUN-day) announced today that Google Glass will be able to operate some features of the 2015 Hyundai Genesis car expected in the spring of this year. The features are possible because of Hyundai’s cloud-based Blue Link platform, which will enable all kinds of wearable devices to access the some of the car’s features. Hyundai is specifically working on a Glassware app that will enable you to use Xbox Kinect-like hand gestures to move from one screen to the next, then use Glass’s touchpad to start the car, lock the doors and, hopefully, pay the ticket you’ll get for wearing Google Glass behind the wheel. https://www.hyundaiusa.com/genesis/comparison.aspx?cid=sem_google&k_clickid=3317a1b9-4200-2da9-8383-00006aa7564ehttp://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/ces-google-135002

sl[sl] Maybe "CES" should stand for the "Car Electronics Show", at least this year. Today Google announced partnerships with carmakers Audi, GM, Honda and Hyundai and GPU maker Nvidia to form the Open Automotive Alliance, which focuses on standards for putting Android in car dashboards for both entertainment and navigation. The alliance is Google’s answer to Apple’s iOS in the Car program, which was announced back in June. You might recall that last year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said his company is planning to use Android to power the 17-inch dashboard screens in Tesla Model S cars. http://www.openautoalliance.net/http://officialandroid.blogspot.sg/2014/01/new-partnership-to-bring-android-to.html

me[me] CES is ushering in an insane variety of “smart” things. We add the “smart” label to things that used to be dumb, but are now smart because they’re electronic and connect to the Internet.

Last year’s CES: smart fork called the HAPIfork, which tracks how fast you eat.

This year, the same company, called Kolibree, has a smart toothbrush, which watches you to make sure you brush your teeth right.

The $299 Aura sleep system by Withings makes sure you’re sleeping right, and helps you with light and sound. Sensor pad under the matress, plus lamp with speaker. Tracks movement, breathing, heart-rate.

The $99 June bracelet from Netatmo tracks sun exposure; alerts your iPhone. (French jewelry designer Camille Toupet)

Can’t I brush my teeth, go to bed or go outside without tracking myself?

- According to the research firm Risk Based Security, 2012 was a record year for security breaches, with the number of intrusions more than doubling from a year earlier.
- NSA (even if for good) is stealing data too
- how do we get control back? target had a sales drop. snapchat might lose users (?)
- securing data companies can really shine here
- farhad manjoo writes in WSJ that snapchat users should boycott to force better security

sl[sl] great story in WSJ of how in 2012 Mark Zuckerberg decided to sell more ads in Facebook's "news feed," where 1.2B members spend most of their time. called on Andrew "Boz" Bosworth, a top engineer at Facebook and Zuck friend, who created 80 page spreadsheet.
- Analysts expect FB to announce crazy revenue in next earnings report - a jump of more than 40% in 2013 compared with a year earlier. About $3B of the company's revenue—or more than one-third of the overall total—likely came from mobile advertising.
- Facebook shares jumped 105% last year, compared with the technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite's rise of 38%. On August 2, the stock climbed back above its IPO price of $38, erasing a $50 billion slide in stock-market value.
- October when Facebook reported a decline in use among young teenagers
- zuck decided on "nonsocial" ads, or those that aren't tied to a user's "likes" or other signals, in the news feed. The shift came after Chris Cox, Facebook's vice president of product, showed the CEO internal data that suggested his previous resistance to nonsocial ads was hurting Facebook's business.

me[me] You may have heard about Samsung’s ginormous, one hundred fifty two thousand dollar ultra-HD TV at CES, poetically branded as the 110-S9. It turns out that’s not the biggest TV in its class. Vizio today announced at CES a 120-inch ultra-HD TV called the Reference Series Ultra HD LED Smart TV. Vizio didn’t announce pricing or availability, but they did trot out the dimensions: It’s 6 feet tall and weighs 400 pounds. http://news.yahoo.com/vizio-reference-series-120-inch-132530749.html

sl[sl] So how bout that weather, huh? it's worth noting that CES 2014 started off with fewer attendees because of a New Year's snowstorm in the Northeast and a cold snap in Chicago that cancelled thousands of flights nationwide. And that matters for huge companies like Samsung which poured who knows how much money into a new-product keynote tonight in Las Vegas. the cancellations are really bad - At one point, United's website stopped processing queries and users got an automated msg when they called that said- We can't handle the call volume, please try again later.http://www.businessinsider.com/disaster-strikes-ces-in-vegas-as-thousands-of-flights-are-canceled-nationwide-2014-1
