slThe US National Security Agency just got told to back off. In August, US President Barack Obama commissioned a panel of five intelligence and legal experts to review the NSA’s surveillance program. Among its 46 recommendations the panel suggests cell phone metadata should remain under the control of a telecom company or independent consortium and the NSA should get a court order for all queries or data mining. The report states the recommendations are meant "to safeguard the privacy and dignity of American citizens...while also allowing the intelligence community to do what must be done to respond to genuine threats.” The recommendations are not binding.http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/19/us/politics/report-on-nsa-surveillance-tactics.html

tmThe Washington Post reports that tinfoil hat wearing crazies like me who cover their laptop cameras with post-it notes may have accidentally been right. Research from Johns Hopkins University provides the first public confirmation that it’s possible to covertly activate a computer’s camera — without triggering the light that lets users know it is recording. IN Apple’s MacBook, the camera light is hardware locked to the camera however, researchers were able to reprogram the chip inside the camera to subvert the process. Their demonstration only works on Apple laptops up to 2008 but in theory could be made to work on later models and from other manufacturers.

tmObama Is Urged to Sharply Curb N.S.A. Data Mininghttp://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/19/us/politics/report-on-nsa-surveillance-tactics.html

.

- In August, US President Barack Obama commissioned a panel of five intelligence and legal experts
- 46 recommendations the panel says cell phone metadata should remain under the control of a telecom company or independent consortium and the NSA should get a court order for queries or data mining. The report states:
-“We have identified a series of reforms that are designed to safeguard the privacy and dignity of American citizens, and to promote public trust, while also allowing the intelligence community to do what must be done to respond to genuine threats.” The recommendations are not binding.
- FISA courts should have a public interest advocate and judges appointed by all Supreme Court justices not just the Chief
- extend to foreigners essentially the same protections that citizens have under the Privacy Act of 1974
- US should stop exploiting flaws in software to mount cyberattacks,
Q: What do you think of the recommendations and do you think some or any will be implemented?
Members:
-Richard A. Clarke, a cyberexpert and former national security official under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush,
-Michael J. Morell, a former deputy director of the C.I.A.;
-Cass Sunstein, a Harvard Law School professor who ran the office of Information and Regulatory Affairs in the Obama White House;
-Peter Swire, a privacy law specialist at the Georgia Institute of Technology;
-Geoffrey R. Stone, a constitutional law specialist at the University of Chicago Law School, where Mr. Obama once taught.

videohttp://techcrunch.com/2013/12/18/that-yahoo-sirigoogle-now-competitor-video-is-not-a-yahoo-product/VIDEO

.

- TC ran a story about a video that showed a Yahoo Siri competitor. “Sources familiar with Yahoo’s internal projects tell us that the video is fake,” we wrote. Yahoo didn’t make the video itself, and it didn’t make the app, but the app is real - was made by a natural language/speech recognition/navigation startup Robin Labs
- Robin Labs has been building platform for custom voice assistants. It’s the second stage of the startup’s development, the first of which was to develop its own eponymous personal assistant and navigation app. (That app launched last year.) As for stage two, think of it as Siri for everyone and everything, not just Apple.
- on yahoo: “We’ve been in conversations with them,” he says. “But our white-label platform was not commissioned by Yahoo.”

- also blocked a programme run by sex education experts, and taught to 81,000 American children, that has been in development for more than 20 years.
- BBC Newsnight attempted to access 68 prone sites and the filter did not block 5 of them.
- Sky’s filter blocked 99% of porn sites but also blocked porn addiction treatment sites

slVine is now available for Android Gingerbread devices, though it doesn’t support video uploadshttp://thenextweb.com/twitter/2013/12/19/vine-now-available-android-gingerbread-devices-though-doesnt-support-video-uploads/#!qga2E

Twitter’s Vine gets vanity URLs: sign-up starts Dec. 20 for verified accounts and Dec. 23 for all othershttp://thenextweb.com/twitter/2013/12/19/twitters-vine-gets-vanity-urls-sign-starts-dec-20-verified-dec-23-others/

.

- Gingerbread version of Vine doesn’t allow video uploads — “due to device limitations” — but users can watch, like, comment on and revine videos from the app. Though it is approaching three years old, Gingerbread (Android 2.3) still accounts for 24% of all active Android devices, so that's a lot of potential users
- vanity URLs for vine users. verified accts start tomorrow, everyone else on the 23rd
- Twitter says that it will be automatically reserve profile URLs that “mirror verified Twitter @usernames”. So even though the username is secure, you need to claim the profile by registering for it.
q: vine vids were basically video permalinks with no profile pages, history, etc. will this help engagement?

slActive Twitter accounts follow a median 117 users, 76% follow more people than follow them http://radar.oreilly.com/2013/12/tweets-loud-and-quiet.html

.

- jon bruner at o'reilly took a random sampling of about 400,000 Twitter accounts. The profile that emerges suggests that Twitter is more a consumption medium than a conversational one.
- median Twitter account has a single follower. Among the much smaller subset of accounts that have posted in the last 30 days, the median account has just 61 followers. If you’ve got a thousand followers, you’re at the 96th percentile of active Twitter users (who have logged in last 30 days).
- Active Twitter accounts follow a median 117 users, and the vast majority of them–76%–follow more people than follow them.
- just under one in every thousand Twitter accounts has a name that refers to Justin Bieber in some way; an additional one in every thousand refers to Bieber in its account description.
q: a lot of no-growth. worrisome?

Hey gang. This is Jason from Altoona, PA.

The original discussion on rumors of Google baking their own chips caught my attention. I didn't have any ideas at that time other than what you suggested, until just now as I watched Monday's podcast. Sarah mentioned something about assembly lines in the discussion regarding Google's purchase of Boston Dynamics.

What if these are both connected? The obvious connection would be the ability to design new robots and chips to run them for a TRULY Google Experience chip foundry. But a more exciting possibility would be rapid prototyping combining chip foundry tech, robotics, AND 3D printing technologies.

Every time I try to figure out the goal, I come to a different conclusion about what's possible. A case of IDIC in real life perhaps?

Thanks for the wonderful show, and I'm sure I speak for thousands of TWiT fans when I say we'll miss you Tom. Hope everyone has a good Christmas and enters 2014 running.

Hi Sarah, Iyaz, Tom, and Jason:

About LG's Chrome OS desktop, initially, I was thinking what Iyaz was thinking: at the right price, this could be a great monitor that happens to run Chrome OS as a bonus feature. Then I realized: this is *exactly* what I wanted in college. This is dorm desktop. Since most college-age people these days watch video online, this is their TV. It shows Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube and you can plug your Xbox or PlayStation into it via the HDMI input to play games as well. It can also be a desktop if you really need it in a pinch, too.
