slItalian newspapers are reporting that Amazon has acquired Gopago, maker of iOS and Android mobile apps to pre-pay for goods before picking them up at a store, and retailers a point-of-sale system to process those orders. Gopago, founded in 2009, is based in Silicon Valley but was started by Italian co-founders, though it's not clear if those founders and any other Gopago staff will join Amazon, or if this is an acquisition for technology only.http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/16/amazon-reportedly-buys-mobile-payments-startup-gopago-working-on-an-ambitious-new-project/

iaPresident Barack Obama will meet with executives from Google, Apple, and other tech companies to find ways to improve the HealthCare.gov website. Eric Schmidt, Tim Cook, Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg, and Twitter's Dick Costolo are expected to be in attendance. These powerful people will also discuss the impact of the NSA's survellience on tech companies.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/16/us-usa-healthcare-obama-idUSBRE9BF1EG20131216

.

tmHere’s something to get the President’s conversation with the tech titans rolling. US District Court Judge Richard Leon issued a preliminary injunction against the US, ordering the NSA to stop collection of phone metadata and destroy any metadata collected on two plaintiffs who brought the case. The order was suspended though as the US plans to appeal the injunction. So just to recap, only two people affected, the order is not in force, and the DoJ is appealing. Judge Leon did write a compelling opinion arguing why a 1979 case that allowed police to capture several phone numbers for two weeks should not be considered precedent to five years of capturing the metadata of every call placed by hundreds of millions of people and counting.http://www.politico.com/story/2013/12/national-security-agency-phones-judge-101203.html

slPrice quotes for business customers are starting to come in for new Mac Pros, which helps us at least more closely guess what US retial pricing will look like. For exmaple, a customer who buys an 8-core Mac Pro with 32GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, will pay a base of $3999 base + $1500 processor upgrade + $400 RAM upgrade + $300 storage upgrade, yielding a total price of $6199. At the other, lower end, Apple's $2999 base Mac Pro model carries a quad-core Intel Xeon processor, 12 GB of RAM, and dual AMD FireCore D300 graphics.

Judge's word on NSA program won't be the lasthttp://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2013/12/17/judges-word-on-nsa-program-wont-be-the-last

.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon issued a preliminary injunction Monday in case brought against US gov’t by legal activist Larry Klayman and Charles Strange, the father of a cryptologist technician who was killed in Afghanistan.
- Judge Leon ruled the NSA program collecting metadata on all telephone calls appears to violate the 4th Ammendment ban on unreasonable searches and seizures- Justice Department had failed to demonstrate a single case where collecting the information had helped to head off terrorist attacks. Not time-sensitive to gather this data.
- Leon issued preliminary injunction and order to destroy data collected on plaintiff’s accounts but suspended it pending appeal
- Judge Leon: “I cannot imagine a more ‘indiscriminate’ and ‘arbitrary invasion’ than this systematic and high-tech collection and retention of personal data on virtually every single citizen for purposes of querying it and analyzing it without judicial approval,”
- Discounted Smith v. Maryland (pen register) as precedent: “The ubiquity of phones has dramatically altered the quantity of information that is now available and, more importantly, what that information can tell the Government about people’s lives,” the judge wrote. “I cannot possibly navigate these uncharted Fourth Amendment waters using as my North Star a case that predates the rise of cell phones.”
- Points out Smith v Maryland involved collecting info for two weeks on and was not stored after the case.
- Injunction goes to appeals court. May go to Supreme Court. May be considered only to apply to these two individuals. May end up meaningless.

Hey TNT crew,

You guys didn't really seem all that into Twitter rolling out the "tweets around you" function but let me tell you why I am. Like Tom, I used to use one of the 3rd party apps that did this same thing and I found it immensely useful. Not for finding out what was going on around me, but for who was around me. It allowed me to browse local tweets and find interesting people that were worth following because they also mention things going on locally.

To this day probably half the people I follow came from this search method and I engage with them the most. I look forward to using this feature in the native apps.

Love the show,

Hey TNT Crew,

I was listening to episode 903 and thought about a couple uses for Google's purchase of Boston Dynamics.

First, I think that they might be able to apply the algorithms behind the robotics movement in their self driving car technology. I know their robots can move through a ton of different terrain types including snow which is definitely something that is missing from their current self driving cars.

Second, I could see Google doing something wild such as mounting Street View cameras on the back of Big Dogs and Cheetahs and letting them loose into areas the street view cars could never access.

Love the Show!
Chris from Cleveland
