slAccording to documents leaked by Edward Snowden and published by The Guardian, the NSA has been monitoring online gaming communities since 2008 and sending agents into online RPGs posing as players. Xbox Live was a targeted service, as was World of Warcraft and Second Life. None of the leaked files suggest that this tactic caught any terrorists, even though undercover operations were apparently so numerous that an NSA analyst called for a "deconfliction group" to be set up to prevent the agency's personnel from inadvertently spying on each other. http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/09/nsa-reportedly-infiltrated-xbox-live/

Global government surveillance reformhttp://reformgovernmentsurveillance.com/

.

Reform Government Surveillance - Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, AOL, LinkedIn, Twitter and Yahoo
( echoes of Jim Sensenbrenner/Patrick Leahy bill, conflicts with Feinstein)
Limit governments’ authority to collect users’ information
Oversight and accountability
Transparency about government demands
Respect the freer flow of information
Avoid conflict about governments

Asks US Congress to “take the lead and make reforms that ensure that government surveillance efforts are clearly restricted by law, proportionate to the risks, transparent and subject to independent oversight.”

Microsoft's Brad Smith: "People won't use technology they don't trust. Governments have put this trust at risk, and governments need to help restore it."

.

NSA and GCHQ monitoring online games since 2008
- Exploiting Terrorist Use of Games & Virtual Environments paper described as "target-rich communications network" where targets could “hide in plain sight”
- Agents sent into Xbox Live, WoW and Second Life posing as players. Attempted to recruit informants.
- Hezbollah produced a game called Special Forces 2 for $10 for the purpose of recruitment.
- attempt to extract World of Warcraft metadata from their troves of intelligence, and trying to link "accounts, characters and guilds" w/o Blizzard permission

So many Q’s
1: What was the average ranged DPS of an NSA agent?
2: Do we have a problem with the Humint side of this (playing) or just the data interception?
3: Who’s the GENIUS analyst who was able to sell this to his superiors?

iaMotorola CEO sees Project Ara as the future of Moto Maker customization

.

Moto G a profit pariah as Google sacrifices marginshttp://www.slashgear.com/moto-g-a-profit-pariah-as-google-sacrifices-margins-06307944/

.

- Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside talked a bit about Moto Maker, Motorola's build to order tool
- He says that Moto Maker and Project Ara may converge, but that it might take some time
- If you forgot about Project Ara, that's Motorola's open-source initiative where you could have modular cellphone components
- Woodside says there's a prototype built for Project Ara, but didn't give a timeline
- He said he wasn't sure how long the skeleton of the phone would last - they'd have to see where it goes.

- Woodside also talked about the Moto G saying it was designed to be as good as the iPhone 5 for a third of the cost
- research firm TechInsights told the WSJ that a teardown of the 16GB Moto G shows the device is $123 in components alone. The 16GB model costs $199 unlocked. TechInsights says the Motorola probably takes away about 5% in operating profit on each Moto G sold
- For comparison: Samsung can make about 20% profit on something like the Galaxy S3 Mini

Q: Is Ara the right future for Motorola? Can Motorola chip away at Samsung's marketshare with low profit margin phones?

slVerizon to acquire CDN Edgecast to enhance media serviceshttp://gigaom.com/2013/12/09/verizon-to-acquire-cdn-edgecast-for-enhanced-media-control/

.

- Verizon is acquiring Edgecast, a content delivery network that's profitable. price not public, TechCrunch estimating deal around $350M.
- Edgecast will help provide “quality high-performance digital experiences” to customers. The company, founded in 2006, has developed a specialty in delivering high-quality video content
- Edgecast has made smart telecom partnerships. while providing CDN services for clients like Pinterest and Hulu, Edgecast made partnerships with Deutsche Telekom and AT&T to bring video to mobile subscribers.
- Verizon and Edgecast have also worked together in the past, most notably with Verizon’s Enterprise Solutions line, but the telco has largely looked to Akamai, the leader in CDN, to execute content delivery. It’s unclear at this point how this acquisition will ultimately affect Verizon’s continued business with Akamai.
- ongoing issues between Verizon and the FCC over net neutrality. Whether Verizon will legally be able to do these things is still in the air, but it will certainly have the practical capabilities very soon.
q: do we see much changing here? verizon pushing more of its own content?

- The Nexus TV would launch in the first half of next year and be "aggressively priced"
- A device like this was rumored back in July after the WSJ reported that Andy Rubin demoed a Google-made Android STB at CES behind closed doors

Q: Does anything about the device sound like a winner? How can a Google STB stand out?

- Prism Skylabs combines security camera video with software to build flow charts of people's movements and uses heat maps to show which products get picked up/touched the most. you can move things like perfumes and bracelets from low-traffic areas to high-traffic ones, moving a top seller to the back part of the store, signing up people to shop online when wait times got too long.
- Forest City Enterprises Inc operates about 20 malls, & asked some restaurant tenants to open earlier on Black Friday, after last year's tracking data showed shoppers who had arrived at midnight leaving around 6 a.m.,maybe to go get food? As a solution this year, several restaurants in Forest City malls planned to open before 6 a.m
- can backfire: Some Nordstrom customers complained on social-media sites and directly to the retailer last spring after it used Wi-Fi signals from smartphones to track customer movement in 17 stores. The retailer had posted signs to notify shoppers about the test, which ended in May. Nordstrom said it was seeking trends about general shopping behavior and didn't collect information about individuals.
- Apple is rolling out its iBeacon technology in more than 250 U.S. stores to send information through Bluetooth signals to customers' smartphones, including merchandise locations, customer-service updates and offers to upgrade software. As to iBeacon Darren nailed the iBeacon in Lowes and HomeDepot as a great place for iBeacon. What about grocery stores? While I tend to go the Publix near my home but their are many other Publix grocery stores in my area I might stop at.

Other places that would be really handy at would be airports, cruise ships, Walmart, Target, Sam's, Costco, or any large store. What about at a University?
