tmApple acquired Topsy Labs, one of the few companies with full access to the full Twitter firehose of data. Among other things Topsy has an archive of every twitter post since launch in 2006. The WSJ reports Apple paid more than $200 million. Apple could use Topsy’s real-time data for its radio service, app store or iAds, among other things. http://gigaom.com/2013/12/02/apple-buys-topsy-for-200m-a-way-to-listen-to-twitter-data/

As part of the launch, Google also announced expanded support for new operating systems, a 10 percent drop in pricing for standard instances, new 16-core instances for applications that need a lot of computation power and a new logo to update its branding.http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/02/googles-compute-engine-hits-general-availability-drops-instance-prices-10-adds-new-16-core-instance-types-and-docker-support/

iaHuawei CEO Ren Zhengfei told Les Echos that he wants the company to pull out of the US market. Huawei's CEO has a past association with the People's Liberation Army, which has hindered the company from making strides in the U.S. telecom sector. Ren says that if the company is getting in the way of U.S.-China relations, "it's not worth it" and Huawei will leave the U.S. market to "not stay in the middle."http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/03/huawei-usproblems/

tmWho’s winning the console war? Depends on what day it is and who you ask. PS4 sold a million then Xbox sold a million, but wait Xbox launched in more countries, then PS4 broke records in the UK BUT Infoscout projected Xbox One sold more on Black Friday And THEN Today. Sony announced it has sold 2.1 million PS4s as of December 1. Expect the next press release to come from Microsoft. slSpotify has a reputation with some artists as being not good enough compensation-wise. In response, the company has launched a new website, Spotify Artists, designed to explain how much musicians could be paid if they decide to stream their music. Spotify uses real-world, anonymized examples to detail how it calculates royalties, which have passed the $500 million this year. Two new partners, Next Big Sound's Artist Analytics dashboard and Topspin, processes Spotify's music metrics and helps artists decide when might be the best time to embark on a tour or new promotional campaign.http://www.engadget.com/2013/12/03/spotify-artists-analytics-tickets/

iaLet's see who's using the patent hammer to nail another company. Oh, look. Nokia just won an injunction against HTC for patent infringement. Starting on December 6th, the HTC One Mini will not be sold in the UK. The HTC One is also affected, but it is under a delayed injunction so HTC has the chance to appeal. Judge Richard Arnold explained that stopping sales of the HTC One would cause "considerable" damage.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-03/nokia-gets-ruling-blocking-sales-of-htc-s-one-mini-phone-in-u-k-.html

tmElan Gale put one over on most of us including myself, revealing yesterday on Twitter that there was no Diane and his account of a dispute with the angry air traveler was for entertainment purposes only. His post read "Here is Diana sitting in a chair" and showed a picture of an empty chair. He followed that up by writing "Whoops. Meant Diane. Great time for a typo." Rumors about Diane's identity had started to include allegations that she suffered from late-stage lung cancer before Gale put the hoax to rest.http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/12/nasty-thanksgiving-note-hoax.html

slNetflix’s newest show aimed at kids, “Turbo Fast” debuts on Christmas Eve, but kids will only be able to watch five episodes of the animated series, rather than the whole season. Netflix isn’t committing to a release schedule, but said there will be “additional all-new episodes premiering throughout the year.” So, will Netflix ends up changing its release strategy for non-animated content too? Perhaps the Amazon model of releasing just a handful of episodes of shows like “Alpha House” when they debut, then rolling out a new one every week, is looking more attractive.http://allthingsd.com/20131203/netflix-wont-let-your-kids-binge-quite-as-much-with-turbo-its-newest-original/

tmHey remember ACTA? Thought it was dead after the EU rejected it? Well Canada doesn’t think it’s quite so dead. The copyright treaty required participating countries to change their own intellectual property laws. A bill to comply was introduced to the Canadian parliament in March but was never considered. The bill was reintroduced in late October under the code C-8 and without any public discussion seems to be moving forward. http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20131201/22105325420/without-anyone-paying-attention-canada-is-about-to-change-its-laws-to-join-acta.shtml

iaFortune.com published a website screenshot showing a China Mobile subsidiary taking pre-orders for the Apple iPhone. This fueled speculation that the iPhone was finally headed to the world's largest mobile carrier, China Mobile. A China Mobile spokesperson told CNN that there is no deal with Apple yet. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/12/03/us-apple-chinamobile-idUSBRE9B20LL20131203

iaApple Buys Topsy For Price Reportedly North Of $200M, Could Use Social Signals To Bolster Siri, App Store Relevance http://techcrunch.com/2013/12/02/apple-buys-topsy-for-a-reported-200m-could-use-social-signals-to-bolster-app-store-relevance/

Apple Buys Topsy, a Social Media Analytics Firm http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/03/technology/apple-buys-topsy-a-social-media-analytics-firm.html?_r=0

.

What’s Topsy? Why Did Apple Buy It?http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2013/12/02/whats-topsy-why-did-apple-buy-it/

.

- The WSJ reports Apple just bought social analytics firm Topsy for more than $200M. Apple confirmed the acquisition.

What Topsy Does:
- Topsy allows customers to tap into a store of over 425 billion tweets from 2006 onwards to sniff out trends.
- The six-year-old startup also has a platform through which government agencies can analyze billions of tweets – helping emergency-management workers monitor where accidents may have occurred and whether supplies were delivered.
- Using references to physical landmarks or local events, Topsy says it can pinpoint the country of origin for about 95% of tweets and the city of origin for close to one-quarter of all tweets.

Guesses for Usage:
- TC guesses that It seems more likely that Topsy has technology or engineers (read: acqui-hire) that can parse trends in a way that Apple wants to incorporate into one of its products.
- The WSJ article points to iTunes Radio ads and the iAd platform as possible beneficiaries of the Topsy engine, too.
- Another TC guess for Topsy's tech is an improved Siri
Q: What's your best guess for Topsy's fate? Do you see a pattern in Apple's acquisitions of late -- Hopstop (transportation app), Matcha (Media discovery app), PrimeSense (Motion Sensing), Topsy (Twitter Trends)?

.

- Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei told French publication Les Echos 11/26 that he wants the telecom equipment manufacturer to pull out of the U.S. market.
- Interview published in English today by Foreign Policy magazine.
- “If Huawei gets in the middle of U.S.-China relations, it's not worth it. Therefore, we have decided to exit the U.S. market and not stay in the middle,” Ren told Les Echos.
- Ren was a military technologist for the PLA.
- White House review Oct. 2012 found no evidence the company spied on US, but damned the company for making networking gear riddled with security holes
- Huawei is top third smartphone vendor in the world after Samsung and Apple.
Q: Will all Chinese companies face similar issues, or can a Xiaomi buck the trend?

iaSpotify tries to shed its 'bad for musicians' image with artist analyticshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/12/3/5169808/spotify-for-artists-music-analytics-royalty-rates

.

- Spotify launched Spotify for Artists, an analytics tool
- Spotify For Artists includes a real-time analytics dashboard that tracks how often an artists' music is being listened to and which songs are most popular.
- The dashboard also offers up demographical insights, letting artists check up on their fans' age, gender, and location.
- The dashboard is accompanied by a site that attempts to explain why Spotify is good for artists.
- It lays out how royalties are paid, what Spotify's cut is (30 percent), and how the company can help with exposure to concerts and merchandise. In the guide,
- Spotify says it pays "more than two times more" money than ad-supported video services like YouTube and "significantly more" than online and terrestrial radio services.

Q: Will this tool entice artists to bring their music to Spotify over other places (even YouTube)?

On Covert Acoustical Mesh Networks in Airhttp://www.jocm.us/index.php?m=content&c=index&a=show&catid=124&id=600

.

Researchers, from Germany's Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing, and Ergonomics, recently disclosed their findings in a paper published in the Journal of Communications.
- "In our article, we describe how the complete concept of air gaps can be considered obsolete as commonly available laptops can communicate over their internal speakers and microphones and even form a covert acoustical mesh network," one of the authors, Michael Hanspach, wrote in an e-mail to Dan Goodin at Ars Technica.
- “Over this covert network, information can travel over multiple hops of infected nodes, connecting completely isolated computing systems and networks (e.g. the internet) to each other. We also propose some countermeasures against participation in a covert network."
- Demonstrated on two T400s, 19.7 meters apart.
- Worked best with Adaptive Communication System modem and only achieved 20bps
- Requires sophistication, but military and high-security (nuclear) environments may need to watch for it
- Countermeasures: shut off mice and speakers, filter out high-frequencey ranges, store audio input and output for analysis

Hi Tom, Iyaz, Sarah, & Jason,

I was on the bus today (in Philadelphia) when I saw a Microsoft Surface ad. It had the word "Honestly" in all caps, taking up a third of the banner. A light bulb went off in my head--the Scroogled campaign isn't some side bet; Microsoft is intentionally placing itself as the "honest" company.

I had seen the TV ads, but they don't harp as heavily on the subject as the print and bilboard ads do. I suppose I understand the strategy--but the print ads come off as "honestly, we don't suck. We swear." A little weak, if you ask me.
