The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that Apple plans to ship the first sapphire iPhone 6 and smartwatch screens this month. Apple’s $700 million factory will produce at full capacity twice as much sapphire as the rest of the world’s manufacturers combined, according to the article. http://online.wsj.com/articles/new-iphone-a-sapphire-screen-and-a-higher-cost-1408042296

.

A: Rumored, but this piece appears to provide more detail.
A: 1.4-million-square-foot Mesa, Arizona factory = about the size of 24 football fields
A: Apple opened with materials manufacturer GT Advanced Technologies Inc.
A: Claim about capacity by Eric Virey, a senior analyst at French research firm Yole Développement.
A: Apple already uses sapphire to cover the iPhone's camera lens and fingerprint reader
A: Virey estimates that a sapphire screen could cost $16 to produce, compared with about $3 for Gorilla Glass
A: By forming boules more than 50% larger than produced by current machines, Apple and GT aim to drive down the price of sapphire and close the gap with glass.
A: Apple may save money in warranty costs
A: Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi = savings likely wouldn't offset sapphire's higher cost.
A: Apple paid GT Advanced Technologies $578 million to build the furnaces
A: GT is operating the plant for Apple
A: plant wouldn't reach full operational efficiency until early next year
A: Already using sapphire screens: Britain's Vertu and Japan’s Kyocera

TNT fan Maneka Brooks sents us an email about our lack of coverage of the events in Ferguson, Missouri. She writes:

"I want to start out by saying how much I enjoy listening to TNT everyday. I was disappointed with the lack of discussion of the role of technology and media in the recent protests in Ferguson, MO. It seems a perfect and relevant story considering the different ways police have attempted to suppress official media coverage and how twitter and cell phone video shared via different social platforms have been used as a powerful way to communicate information to the public. Moreover, it addresses multiple aspects of journalism and technology on which TNT prides itself in examining. I was particularly surprised with the lack of discussion of these events because of the attention that was given to the use of technology in various protest movements across the world. I hope that you will take the time in your show to cover the role of technology in this protest and other such events in the United States."

The celebrity gossip site TMZ posted pictures of what they claim is probably the first photos ever published of a fully assembled iPhone 6. Sadly, the pictures show a well-known Chinese knock-off that runs Android. Any iPhone blogger can easily spot the problems with the image -- and several already have. For starters, TMZ's phone is running what looks like iOS 7, rather than iOS 8. Second, the Mail app is called Email. And as 9to5Mac’s Benjamin Mayo pointed out today, the typeface for the Calandar app is wrong. http://www.tmz.com/2014/08/15/apple-iphone-6-pics-photos-leak-leaked/
