Apple retail stores are the most profitable on the planet, bringing in more revenue per square foot than even Tiffany’s jewelry store in New York City. The success of the Apple store can be attributed to a man named Ron Johnson. But after launching, growing and running the Apple Store concept for over a decade, he left Apple three years ago to become the CEO of J.C. Penney. It took Apple all this time to find what the company believes is the right man for the job, -- a woman named Angela Ahrendts, who’s been in charge of Apple’s retail stores for three weeks. http://9to5mac.com/2014/05/19/angela-ahrendts-plan-for-the-future-of-apple-retail-china-emphasis-mobile-payments-revamped-experience/

.

9to5 Mac’s Mark Gurman posted a detailed feature about Ahrendts yesterday, and he’s here to tell us all about it.
Q: Before we talk about Angela Ahrendts, can you first tell about the impact that Ron Johnson had on Apple?
Q: What happened with John Browett, the first replacement for Ron Johnson?
Q: So tell us about Ahrendts’ background.
Q: You wrote that Ahrendts’ plans are focused on three things: China, Mobile payments and a “revamped experience.” Why does she believe the Apple store experience needs to be revamped?
Q: Apple is planning to triple the number of retail stores in China over the next two years, from 10 to 30. Why does Apple believe retail stores in China are a key to the company’s future growth?
Q: You wrote that Ahrendts plans to blur the lines between Apple’s online and physical stores. Is she planning to encourage and facilitate showrooming?

Google is taking its automation of photography to the next level with a free new feature called Google+ Stories. The feature automatically identifies the best pictures, figures out which are part of a single trip or event, then creates an interactive photo album for you to share on Google+. https://plus.google.com/+jsmarr/posts/MVzFj1Gbid2

.

Katie Boehret (bur-ET) is the Deputy Reviews Editor at Re/code and a Senior Reviewer there. She’s been testing Google+ Stories on multiple platforms for some time, and joins us now.
Q: Katie, does this work like Auto-Awesome? Does it just grab the photos and videos that you automatically back up to Google+ and make Stories from those?
Q: How does Google know which of your photos and videos are part of a single event?
Q: What if it makes a mistake or includes pictures I don’t want to share?
Q: Is there anything else out there like this?
Q: What do people need in order to see Stories? A Google+ account? Chrome? Android? iOS?
Q: What was your overall opinion about Google+ Stories?
Katie Boehret
Deputy Reviews Editor & Senior Reviewer, Re/code @kabster728

.

A: It has probably already created Stories for you; just check your photos section on Google+
A: Uses geotags, your phone’s location history and also Google recognizes what’s in the pictures.
A: Scroll through the narrative by clicking on the button or using the arrow keys
A: You can edit Stories
A: Zero effort on your part

China has banned Windows 8 -- at least for employees of the Chinese government. In a bizarre announcement, the country’s Central Government Procurement Center announced the ban as part of a notice on the use of energy-saving products. Their reason? Security! The announcement said it had something to do with Microsoft ending support for Windows XP. http://www.zycg.gov.cn/article/show/242846

We told you yesterday about a report in the Korea Times that says Apple and Samsung have agreed to begin talks to settle their patent disputes out of court. But today we’re hearing about a new court filing by Apple complaining bitterly about Samsung. For example, Apple says Samsung’s head lawyer called Apple a “jihadist” to the media and described the Apple Samsung patent case as “Apple’s Vietnam.” Apple also mentioned a Vanity Fair article that the company says proves that Samsung steals other companies’ ideas. http://cdn3.vox-cdn.com/assets/4479595/1894-main.pdfhttp://www.theverge.com/2014/5/20/5733668/apple-and-samsungs-lawyers-explain-why-they-cant-settle
