tmThe reign of the iPhone is over, at least for a quarter. Strategy Analytics released their market share smartphone market share report for Q3 2012 and the Samsung Galaxy S III grabbed 10.7% of the world market compared to the iPhone 4S's 9.7%. Apple fans can comfortably claim that the iPhone 5 only came out for the last nine days of the quarter and they should be back on top in Q4. Android fans can point out the iPhone fell from 5th to 6th place in China, shout "we're number one" and wave foam fingers. http://thenextweb.com/mobile/2012/11/08/samsungs-galaxy-s-iii-overtakes-the-iphone-4s-as-the-worlds-best-selling-smartphone-in-q3-2012/

slOnly 89.33% of internet searches in the UK were conducted on Google sites last month, according to Experian Hitwise. Seems like a lot, why the long face? Well, it's the first time in the last 5 years that Google search market share in the UK has ever dipped below 90%. Microsoft’s Bing chipped away at the total with 4.71% of all searches, which was a 2012 high, probably related to Windows 8 adoption. Yahoo sites and Ask sites, along with other search engines, grew share in October.http://searchengineland.com/study-google-search-share-slips-below-90-in-the-uk-in-october-139051

iathe reign of bad rim news is over! Good news for, RIM! Yeah, seriously! RIM announced that its upcoming BlackBerry 10 OS has received US government certification already. This is the first time RIM's gotten approval before a launch and that also means that government agencies can issue and use BlackBerry 10 devices when they finally launch. http://thenextweb.com/ca/2012/11/08/blackberry-10-gets-us-government-certification-first-time-rim-products-approved-ahead-of-launch/

tmUnofficially I'd guess Digitimes has about a 50% accuracy rate but here goes. Digitimes reports FoxConn, which has plants in China and Brazil, plans to move into more developing nations by opening a plant in Detroit. Also LA but that didn't fit into the joke. UNless it were int he inland Empire. Anyway the report is attributed to "market watchers" which are right up there with trainspotters and birders I expoect.http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20121108PD204.html

slWinos, it is our time. Amazon launched Amazon Wine today, a marketplace for more than a thousand wines from around the U.S. Customers order directly from a winery via Amazon and are able to ship up to six bottles for $9.99. No free shipping for Primers, though, and each winery operates under its own permits and determines which states it can ship to, and the participating states are limited for now. Both the purchaser and recipient of wine must be at least 21 years old, and all shipments require an adult signature at delivery. Purchases can't be sent to P.O. boxes or Amazon Lockers.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57546927-93/amazon-uncorks-wine-service-delivers-to-your-door/

iaThat Square train keeps on rolling. Square's mobile payment solution is now accepted at about 7,000 Starbucks locations. The partnership that I call "SquareBucks" was announced back in August. But be warned Starbucks fans, if you use the Square app to pay, you're not going to get Starbucks rewards - you'd have to use the Starbucks app for that. http://allthingsd.com/20121107/7000-starbucks-locations-added-to-the-square-wallet/

tmFacebook has expanded into feature phone heavy markest like Africa by partnering with carriers to provide their service for free as an enticement to spend on other services. Gooogle's not shy about ripping off that idea, launching Free Zone in the Phillipines. The new service will allow customers of Globe Telecom to get Gmail, Google + and Google Search without incurring data charges.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57546899-93/google-free-zone-aims-at-connecting-developing-countries/

slFox had called for a preliminary injunction ahead of a copyright ruling on Dish Network's Autohop, a service allowing viewers to automatically skip advertisements on recorded shows, and a judge has rejected it. Fox, Comcast, NBC and CBS have each sued Dish Networks, saying the show recordings are unauthorised, and Fox says it would appeal the latest ruling, and that Autohop is "destroying the fundamental underpinnings of the broadcast television ecosystem". Dish called it a "victory for common sense".http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20251723

tmTwitter sent another round of emails resetting passwords for users they suspect "may have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter." British comedian David Mitchell got the email but said the only thing he noticed was one deleted post. And sadly TechCrunch's story "Make $250 A Day From Home" appears to be a result of the hack and not a legitimate way to rack up over $91,250 a year.http://www.zdnet.com/twitter-user-passwords-reset-after-accounts-breached-7000007108/

iaI'm on the financial beat today apparently - MasterCard is rolling out a new credit card that has an LCD display and a keypad built into the card. It's a move for security as it pretty much combines the card with an authentication token. MasterCard says the card, called "Display Card," looks and works like the old school card. It'll first be available in Singapore and Europe. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-57546761-1/mastercard-rolls-out-credit-card-with-display-and-keypad/

Father Robert asked the question... why does Google want Google Maps on iOS? And you all came up with reasons... but not imho... the biggest reason.

Google wants the DATA it gets from the 100+ million users on iOS back.

Google main business is selling targeted adds based on info it gets from people using its services... people often lose sight of this. when Apple dropped Google maps on iOS Google lost the location/search data for 100+ million users. What's ironic is that you seemed to miss that this is actually the reason why Apple's new really maps suck... because unlike Google, they don't have a rich and diverse source of data from their other services and partners to feed their new Apple Map service like Google does. This was a huge miscalculation by Apple.

love your show!

Hi Guys - love the show

mailing you from Cape Town South Africa

Heard you guys wondering why Skype in China is an issue and Microsoft is not using it there. The reason is that Skype uses a proprietary encryption method that the Chinese government can not open up and inspect. They therefore only allow things like chat and video conferencing that are compliant and use open protocols. So apps like Vidyo is allowed by not Skype. This way they can big-brother the conversation if they want to.
