tmBloomberg reports that no less than three people with knowledge of the work say Apple is exploring using ARM-based chips in its laptops and desktops. While the engineers at Apple don't a see a switch happening for a few years, they also think its inevitable. slHalo 4 was unleashed to the masses today at midnight, and the critics are giving it two thumbs up! After reports of repetitive gameplay, enemies, and environments, a "this again" attitude kinda hung over the press push at E3 2012, when Halo 4 led Microsoft's press conference. But Cnet calls it a "must buy!" so you know what that means.. get out there and vote. http://reviews.cnet.com/xbox-360-games/halo-4-xbox-360/4505-11457_7-34852356.html

iaHow much would you pay for Amazon Prime on a monthly basis? Anybody? Well Amazon agrees with you and is testing an $8 a month option for Amazon Prime. The service would give you access to Amazon's Instant Video library and upgraded shipping services. While it would cost more on the year, about $96 compared to the yearly $80 fee, it could be enticing to new customers. http://gigaom.com/2012/11/06/amazon-prime-tests-7-99month-option-to-compete-with-hulu-netflix/

tmInstagaram took forever to add Android support to its popular iOS service, but it took even longer to add the older, more widespread World Wide Web platform. That long World Wide nightmare is over. Instagram announced Web profiles that allow users to comment, like photos, and edit profiles. http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/11/instagram-moves-from-the-smartphone-to-the-desktop/

slMicrosoft's Surface RT tablet offers twice as much storage as the iPad at the same base $499 price point -- 32GB versus 16GB. So it's better! Unless you actually want to use 32 gb. Microsoft has clarified only about half those 32GB is free for users to access. The total disk size is really 29GB, and then Windows RT, the Microsoft Office apps, and other built-in apps are another 8GB. 5GB more for Windows recovery tools, and you're left with 16GB of free space right out of the box.http://www.zdnet.com/microsoft-surface-rt-32gb-tablet-reserves-nearly-half-its-storage-for-windows-office-apps-7000006974/

iaSome of you Tech News Today redditors are excited about this next story. The BBC Micro game Elite is back as a Kickstarter project. The game is called "Elite: Dangerous" and is looking to raise 1.25 million British pounds. Right now, it's at over £200,000. The guy behind the Kickstarter project? David Braben, who just happens to be one of the original developers of Elite. He says "Elite: Dangerous" is the game that he wanted "to make for a very long time."http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/06/elite_dangerous_on_kickstarter/

tmApple lodged a lawsuit against Motorola in March 2011, claiming the mobile company was charging unreasonably high rates for patent licenses at 2.25 percent of each phone sold. As the case neared trial today, Judge Barbara Crabb dismissed it with prejudice, leaving the question unresolved. The case was dismissed because Apple would not commit to abide by the court's decision. Microsoft has a similar case against Motorola set to go to trial Nov. 13.http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2012/11/judge-puts-an-end-to-apples-patent-license-lawsuit-against-motorola/

slGet an Amazon lockers at Staples and get your online shopping packages sent there. Amazon already has such storage units at grocery, convenience and drug stores, many of them 24 hours open. The point is trying to let customers avoid having to wait for ordered packages due to a missed delivery. Amazon sends customers an email with a pickup code, which is entered on a touchscreen to open the locker containing the package. Shoppers have three days from the delivery date to pick up the package. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/05/staples-amazon-lockers-idUSL1E8M5F7620121105

tmChip design competition just got really complicated. GPU designer Imagination Technologies will buy CPU architecht MIPS for US$60 million. The iPhone 5 uses a GPU based on Imagination designs. Mips CPU designs are used in networking equipment and digital TV. While this logically looks like Imagination gearing up to take on ARM, part of the deal sees Imagination and Allied Security Trust taking 498 of MIPS non-processor patents and creating a new holding company called Bridge Crossing. One of the leading investors in Bridge Crossing? ARM.http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/06/mips_sells_itself_to_imagination_arm/

iaNew Jersey is allowing its citizens to vote via email or fax so they can participate in today's election. Some experts are weighing in and are afraid of miscounts and that email voting will make remove the ability to vote in secret. Princeton University Professor Andrew Appel called email voting insecure and cited concerns of spoofing. Matthew Blaze, a secure systems expert, is concerned that the system may be subject to crashed email servers and denial of service attacks. BTW, go vote today. http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/5/3605504/new-jersey-email-voting-legal-cybersecurity-risk

.

Bloomberg reported Apple engineers confident "one day" ARM cna run desktops and laptops as features of mobile devices and PCs become more similar
- three people with knowledge of the work
- Bob Mansfield put in charge of the Technology group responsible for chip design
- Idea is to unify experience by building all products on same architecture

- Elbrus Technologies has developed emulation technology that allows an ARM chip to run software developed for Intel’s x86 chips
- Ark Hessledahl at ATD speculates it may be negotiating time for Apple and Intel?
- The key question is power vs. power efficiency? Can Apple cross that barrier with ARM?

.

7-inch Xbox Surface tablet rumor emerges ahead of Microsoft's major announcement
http://www.theverge.com/2012/6/18/3094918/xbox-surface-7-inch-tablet-rumor

.

- The Verge reports another smaller suface is on the horizon
- The Verge cites "multiple sources familiar with plans w/in Redmond" that MS is building a 7-inch "Xbox Surface"
- Likely to include an ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM for gaming
- Specs could be altered to handle Intel SoCs
- Xbox Surface would NOT run a full version of Windows. It'd run a custom Windows kernel
- Acc'g to the Verge, part of the Xbox Surface is being developed at MS's offices in Silcon Valley

- Rumors of the Xbox Surface appeared in June

Q: A dedicated portable gaming device from MS is a long time coming. Does this sound plausible and what about the fact it'd be Xbox specific and not Windows?

Facebook For iOS Gets Photo Filters And Multi-Shot Sharing, Beating Twitter To The Punchhttp://techcrunch.com/2012/11/05/facebook-multi-photo-uploads/

.

- profiles going live for all users this week. same profile on web as app.
- has some FB timeline qualities, but top images are dynamic, change
- path to monetization. brands didn't used to have landing page. now they do.
- meanwhile FB for iOS gets filters too, batch sharing in its main app (also has FB Camera app launched in May)
- hot on heels of photo filter Twitter news
- will FB app take users away from IG if they have filters + BATCH uploading?
Systrom tells ATD: “We believe this is a big step in allowing brands to have an Instagram home on the web where they can share recent shots with just about anyone. We’re obviously very excited by the adoption of Instagram by the world’s major brands and we’ll continue to build products that suit both them and users alike.”

.

- Foursquare announced a new rating system for locations
- Foursquare says it will look at tips, likes, dislikes, popularity, loyalty, local expertise, and check-ins to come up with its rating (system is on a 10-point scale)
- You'll find the scores in the "Explore" section of the iOS app (users can also add a score in the same section) and it's also available on the web

Q: With the shift from a gamified check-in app, would this make you use Foursquare more and should Yelp worry?

slYes, Apple will approve Google Maps for iOShttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57545241-37/yes-apple-will-approve-google-maps-for-ios/

.

- Yesterday Guardian quoted sources at Google familiar with its mapping plans say they are "not optimistic" that Apple will ever approve a dedicated Google Maps iOS app. App in development and eady to ship by the end of the year, sources say their plans are only proceeding in "the unlikely event" that Apple will choose to approve the app.
- tech blogs went crazy. "how can apple do this, how shady" etc
- Cnet says, calm down. show me a dev who's not afraid of app store approval process. apps get denied, yanked all the time.
- plus, apple recommended google maps during maps fallout.
- plus, apple doesn't want the bad pub. google voice wasn't in app store at 1st, public was pissed, FCC got involved, app appeared.

Hi guys, thought I'd jump in on this:

Companies like Apple et al are not so fond of releasing model by model sales figures as this data is usually considered 'commercially sensitive'. If you are a competitor planning to build 2 million devices before launching your product, it is terribly useful (from a supply chain management perspective, at least) to know that white tablets sell better than black ones and the 64GB storage capacity model has a comparatively small, but dedicated (read: wealthy), following compared to other storage variants. Oops, did I just give away the secret sauce!?

Anyway - the exact breakdown is pretty useful to competitors. Apple probably sees the iPad as one product with 24 size/storage/colour/radio variants (not including the iPad 2) and not as an iPad and an iPad Mini.
