It's Guy Fawkes day which means those masks made popular by V for Vendetta and the Anonymous hackers will sell like hotcakes. slIs Facebook “broken on purpose” to sell promoted posts?http://arstechnica.com/business/2012/11/is-facebook-broken-on-purpose-to-sell-promoted-posts/

.

- some FB page owners complaining that FB promotion driving less numbers to sites
- seems to coincide w FB promoted posts feature. pay to be featured up top
- could FB be cutting traffic numbers in order to make money?
- FB says it's not doing anything different. attempts to show you the most relevant updates, just trying to keep user feeds from being too promote-y, delicate balance, but they make money this way
- example: blog Dangerous Minds climbed from 29,000 to 53,000 Facebook likes even as traffic to its site, shared posts dropped one half to two-thirds in the same period.
- Ars says likes climb and traffic back to Ars seems unusually low.
- A post at the New York Observer in September reported that Facebook posts made from a brand's fan page—brands or celebs - now reach only 15% of fans on average.
- BRANDS JUST LOUDER. a couple studies- one from Pew Research says As of May, the average Facebook user had 229 friends and only 17% posted a status update once or more per day. Brandwatch study showed as of August, the average Facebook brand/fan page had 40,000 fans and averaged one post per day.

iaTwitter to Add Photo Filters to Compete With Instagram
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/11/02/twitter-will-introduce-photo-filters-to-compete-with-instagram/

.

Adding Photo Filters Doesn’t Mean That Twitter Will Cancel Out Instagramhttp://techcrunch.com/2012/11/02/adding-photo-filters-doesnt-mean-that-twitter-will-cancel-out-instagram/

.

- NYT reports Twitter will add filters for photos in its mobile apps
- According to one Twitter employee, the company’s V.I.T.’s, or Very Important Tweeters, as they are known internally, usually celebrities and media personalities, would be especially happy to see filters in the Twitter mobile apps.
- The NYT says that Twitter looked into purchasing other Instagram competitors once the service was snapped up by Facebook, but decided that building its own would be better.
- One liner (really interesting): "Twitter is exploring adding other tools to its mobile applications, one employee said, including the ability to upload and possibly edit videos without having to go through a third-party application or service, like YouTube."

Q: Instagram killer or just another checkbox feature for Twitter? And what about that video hosting and editing ability - trouble for YouTube?

- Android is 5 years old: Five years ago, on 5 November 2007, the newly formed Open Handset Alliance unveiled Android -- an open-source operating system for mobile phones. (Apple's iPhone launched on June 29th 2007, unveiled Jan 9, 2007)

- The T-Mobile G1 didn't arrive until October 22nd 2008
- Set aside $10M for developers

- Q: We've seen webOS come and go, Windows Mobile get the boot (back as WP), mobile Linux variants killed in the past 5 years, are we going to see another disruptive mobile OS like Android again?

Hello TNT folks,
I was listening to your Friday episode where you were discussing the Google Wallet feature of a physical card and I was struck by how this sounds EXACTLY like PayPal's Debit MasterCard or their new "PayPal Purchase in store" program.

First this Debit MasterCard is connected to your PayPal account, and you can choose to either have purchases come out of your PayPal balance, or you can connect a checking (or a credit card) account to it.  There is also the option of setting a PIN so you can get your PayPal balance out as cash at an ATM, OR using the card as a debit card and choosing "Cash Back" on the pin pad.

The second, and newer way, to pay with PayPal in person is this "Purchase in store" program. At select stores on the payment pad at the register you will tap "PayPal" and enter your mobile number and a PIN.  Just like the MasterCard you choose which place the money comes from.

The only way I can see that Google Wallet is different is it allows you to change the payment source via a mobile app… I'm not sure if PayPal's mobile app allows this, but the mobile website does.

On the Friday show Tom commented that the reason the Nexus 4 didn't have LTE was because it was a Mid range phone. My belief the main reason Google chose not to include LTE in the Nexus 4 was to ensure it could remain unlocked and thereby be maintained by Google.

The Verizon Galaxy Nexus seemed to be the catalyst for this decision. Sprint and Verizon Gnex owners had to wait 4 to 5 months to see the jellybean update while their GSM counterparts received them the week it was released.

What differentiates a Nexus device from every other Android device is the Support and Maintenance directly from Google. Since there is no way to sell a unlocked CDMA device Google can't provide the product support a nexus device demands.

Also if the CDMA problem was magically solved Google would still have to design 3 separate devices (one for each carrier with no carrier support or advertising) or one device with 10 radios.

The Nexus 4 is actually the Optimus G unlocked with a pure unskinned version of 4.2 jellybean with a different body. The specs are exactly the same as the AT&T version which is LGs flagship device. Sorry for the rambling email but just wanted to ensure you knew the back story of the last time Google released a LTE Nexus.
