slThe iPad mini officially went on sale today, and there were crowds! Sort of. Reuters was monitoring lines across the world this morning, including Tokyo and Seoul Apple Stores with crowds of 100 or more, but overall, it seems crowds are smaller than they have been in the past for other launches. Does this mean the beginning of the end for Apple? Let's see how the opening weekend numbers look. Analysts are predicting 1-1.5M. http://techcrunch.com/2012/11/02/apples-ipad-mini-launch-draws-smaller-crowds-than-previous-product-debuts/

iaApple has published an apology to Samsung in the Guardian this morning. In an advertisement that could easily be missed, the text says that the High Court of Justice of England and Wales ruled Samsung does not infringe on Apple's design. There isn't an actual "We're sorry" or anything, but at least it's in 14-point font in accordance with the ruling. http://thenextweb.com/apple/2012/11/02/apples-reformed-apology-to-samsung-makes-an-appearance-in-uk-newspapers/

sliPhone, or iFone? In Mexico, looks like the latter. Apple has lost an injunction bid in a Mexico City court that would have allowed it to continue selling iPhone branded hardware in Mexico, after a Mexican company pointed out that it registered its name 4 years before Apple did. .The decision stems from a legal action that Apple initially filed in 2009 requesting that the company cease using the iFone brand in order to not confuse the Apple consumer. http://www.electronista.com/articles/12/11/01/mexican.ifone.registered.trade.name.four.years.before.apple/

iaRussia's new internet-filtering bill goes into effect today. It was passed back in July under the guise of protecting children from pedophiles. However, the bill also gives authorities a way to censor political speech and spy on the entire nation if it wants to with deep packet inspection.http://www.theverge.com/2012/11/2/3589354/russia-internet-filtering-law-surveillance

dkSamsung announced it sold, not shipped, 3 million Galaxy Note 2 since the device launched in September in Korea. The Note 2 didn't reach the UK until October 1 and just recently came to North America. tmThe smartphone operating system market continued its consolidation into a two-company race, and some may see it as a virtual monopoly. IDC issued their Q3 market share numbers, estimating Android holds 75% of the market up from 57.3% in Q3 2011. Apple's iOS increased its market share to 14.9% up from 13.8%. The only other gainer was Windows, up to 2% from 1.2. slA security hole allowing anyone to see the email addresses corresponding to certain Facebook accounts has been discovered! It gets better...some appear to be accessible without even entering a password. But don't worry! a Facebook engineer now says that the company has disabled the feature that created the hole. The vulnerability started getting attention with a Hacker News submission that points to a Google search for the query “inurl:bcode=[*]+n_m=[*] site:facebook.com.” which was linked to potentially 1.35 million personal Facebook accounts, and their corresponding email addresses embedded in the actual URL. http://thenextweb.com/facebook/2012/11/02/facebook-security-hole/

Facebook helps some local businesses provide free Wi-Fi in exchange for check-inshttp://www.insidefacebook.com/2012/11/01/facebook-helps-some-local-businesses-provide-free-wi-fi-in-exchange-for-check-ins/

.

- Facebook's testing a new Wi-Fi hot spot service in a few areas
- If you check-in on FB, you'll get free Wi-Fi
- First noticed by Tom Waddington (also found the FB "want" button and promoted messages), FB confirmed the service w/ Cnet and InsideFacebook.com
- FB provides routers to businesses that direct customers to the business's FB page and potentially deals or specials
- Don't want to check-in or don't use FB? No problem. Still can enter a pw provided by the business
- The idea comes from a Facebook hackathon session.

Q: Sounds like a win-win, FB gets data, you get free WiFi; what is the a downside to this? Do you think this will become graduate out of testing to be a FB product?

iaIntroducing: The Physical Google Wallet Card - Coming Soon To Google Wallet, And More New Features
http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/11/01/introducing-the-physical-google-wallet-card-coming-soon-to-google-wallet-and-more-new-features/

.

- Android Police received a tip that there will be a physical Google Wallet credit card
- The news comes from within the Google Wallet app
- The Google Wallet card would work like a regular credit card and it's linked to another card that you already have.
- In theory, you could leave your real cards at home and just carry the Google Wallet card
- To manage payment: you can open the Google Wallet app and choose another way to pay.
- The card could be ordered from the app itself
- Other upcoming Wallet features: "Wallet Balance" feature where you can deposit and withdraw money, person to person transfers, and transit cards

Q: Is a physical card the gateway to getting people to use Google Wallet for everything?
In the app screeenshots, Google explains why there's a card:
- When you can't tap and pay
- Convenience of one card
- Exclusive offers
- Cancel the one card

tmLet’s Limit the Effect of Software Patents, Since We Can’t Eliminate Themhttp://www.wired.com/opinion/2012/11/richard-stallman-software-patents

.

Richard Stallman founder of FSF and GNU has an opinion piece at Wired
- It's not about software it's about practices. If the practices are executed using software we refer to them as 'software patents' thought they could be implemented in hardware
- Posits that substantive changes will be worked around, and eliminating software patents would likely be found unconstitutional
- Suggests: "developing, distributing, or running a program on generally used computing hardware does not constitute patent infringement. "
- Metaphor is surgery. performing surgery isn't a patent violation, even if the devices and techniques employed in the operation are found to infringe.
- Would this work?

Sorry guys, but I'm just getting caught up on your shows. Earlier in the week when you were listing the usual tech specs for the Nexus 4, there was hardly a peep about it not having LTE. So, here's a big peep! How can the Google flagship phone not have LTE at this juncture? What do you suppose they were thinking, or not thinking?

Regards,
Bill Dahm
Hi TNT crew,
This is Chris from Pittsburgh, writing in about the LG nexus 4. Many initial impressions of the nexus 4 leave people surprised that there is no microSD slot and only 8/16GB storage options. However, large amounts of storage are not needed as Google allows you to store up to 20,000 songs and provides unlimited cloud photo storage. This leaves the remaining storage for apps and the OS. My question is, how much data will one use constantly streaming my music/photos/videos form Google’s servers? This seems like a bold move in the face of current carrier data caps.

Just my two cents!
Thanks for the great show,
Chris

Hi TNT,

Hey I love the show. I wanted to talk about Wi-Fi sharing in times of emergencies. I live in New York City where on the East Coast up to 8 million people still don't have power. For anyone who's watching the show in the effected area please consider sharing your Wifi to allow your neighbors to get access to information to find out about transit, food resources, whether drinking water is safe, and to just tell their families they're okay.

I wanted to open this issue up to wider discussion as many proposed laws would require you lock your internet access and thus could cause major problems for individuals in times of emergency. An allowance for unlocking during emergency may not be sufficient as thousands of homes are abandoned and many aren't sophisticated enough to properly manage these issues during times of emergency.

For anyone who hears this and knows how please consider passing the word along. Information can save lives and many are at risk now. Just the other day, via twitter, we found someone with a generator to power a ventilator assistance device for a man who couldn't leave his home, 3 hours left on his battery. It matters.

From someone else's wifi,
Steven
