slWho wants to know how the Nexus 7 sales are going? Google's Nexus 7 sales are good, almost 1 million units a month good, says Asustek, the tablet maker, during their 3rd quarter earnings call Tuesday. Compare that to Apple's third-quarter sales of 14 million iPads and the number doesn't sound quite as impressive, but Google's announcement of the Nexus 10 tablet and Nexus 4 smartphone this week prove the company is confident they know what's working. http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/10/30/asustek-nexus-7-sales-approaching-1-million-a-month/

slMicrosoft's tiles are a ripoff! At least that's what SurfCast, an operating system technology designer is claiming. In a complaint filed in a US District Court in Maine, SurfCast said Microsoft infringes one of its four patents by "making, using, selling, and offering to sell devices and software products" covered by SurfCast's patent. That covers Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8 OSes as well as PCs using Windows 8/RT. Unsurprisingly, SurfCast wants Microsoft to "account for and pay to SurfCast all damages caused to SurfCast by reason of Microsoft's patent infringement."http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57542863-75/microsoft-sued-over-windows-live-tiles/

.

Privacy in Ubuntu 12.10: Amazon Ads and Data Leaks

https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/10/privacy-ubuntu-1210-amazon-ads-and-data-leaks

.

- The EFF doesn't like the way Ubuntu 12.10 handles privacy
- If you're unfamiliar, the search feature on Ubuntu (called Dash) will search for things on your machine and now for things online
- Searches will yield results with Amazon -affiliated advertisements for products
- This is turned on by defualt
- Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu, says that you're safe. You already trust Ubunutu b/c it has root access.

- Search basics: done over HTTPS, however images are loaded using HTTP (if there are Amazon products to display). The fear is that an eavesdropper could see what images are being loaded.
- And even if the images were loaded via HTTPS, there's a fear that Amazon could correlate images with IP addresses.

- Amazon isn't the only company seeing your data, there are other third parties Online results can be provided by Facebook, Twitter, & BBC

- EFF has instructions on how to remove the web search function.
- "Windows and Mac users are used to having their data sent to third parties without their express consent....Let's make sure Ubuntu ... remains an exception to this."

Q: Is this privacy concern legit or is it an unnecessary panic?

iaThe curious case of Microsoft's Metro, a design language that cannot be spoken

Microsoft now calling Metro apps Windows 8 Store apps
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33642_7-57542868-292/microsoft-now-calling-metro-apps-windows-8-store-apps/

.

At the Build conference, Tom Warren of the Verge asked MS's Will Tschumy what to call "Metro-Style"
- Metro was a design language created for Windows Phone 7 (think big text and squares)

- Tschumy said "I'm not going to get into the details of why we're not [calling it Metro] anymore, but what we are calling the applications is Windows 8 Store applications,"
- Tschumy argued you could refer to the style as "Windows 8 Store-style."
- Windows 8 Store would refer to Microsoft's the tile-based, touch-first programs (that should run on Windows RT and Windows 8)
- MS dropped the "Metro" name due to a trademark dispute
- Tom Warren wondered if the awkward name ("Windows 8 Store-style") means MS doesn't want to refer to the design at all

Q: What do you think of the name and should the name of the design language matter?

Hey TNT Crew,

I’m currently developing for Windows 8 (getting in early!) By default, all apps written in Visual Studio 2012 for the Windows 8 “Metro” environment are automatically compiled for Windows RT as well. Visual Studio doesn’t ask you, it just compiles it for x86, x64 and ARM automatically (it isn’t something you need to think about).

The only reason you’d need to go in and change the compilation settings is if you were doing something extra special in your app which either used some special API that doesn’t work on Windows RT or for performance reasons (which is why some games aren’t available for RT yet).

99% of devs won’t need to think about Windows 8 & RT separately, it’s just one platform to them. For Windows Phone 8, you then can reuse MOST of your Win8/RT code, redesign the UI for a smaller screen size, maybe make some slight modifications to account for the slight difference between the Windows Runtime (WinRT) and the Windows Phone Runtime (WinPRT) (they’re very similar, but not identical) and you’re good to go.

Hi TNT crew,

In response to your discussion on retrieving news during Hurricane Sandy, once my power went out, Twitter was definitely the best way to get news for me. The websites of local news stations and national news sites were terrible and slow to update. Twitter provided crowdsourced updates real-time. False info was quickly squashed and info from official agencies was quickly retweeted.

Unfortunately by the next day, cell reception was lost among blacked out areas so I couldn't get on to Twitter or any site on my phone. Actually, the only thing I could connect to was the local news broadcast via digital FM radio on my (Android) phone. Boy was I glad that my phone had that feature.

You had a few laughs with "Can do" in yesterday's show.

Nuclear reactors in Canada are called CANDU Reactors .They were designed to use natural uranium which Canada had in abundance.
The name is short form for Canadian Deuterium Uranium.

Check it out at

http://www.candu.org/candu_reactors.html

Today they could be called
Canadian nuclear old technology
CANNOT reactors
since they have had operational problems over the years.
