slThe final 1 billion purchase of Instagram to Facebook will sit in its accounting as $521 million. How'd that happen? $300 million in cash that Facebook promised, plus 12 million vested shares of Class B common stock, although that goes to “non-employee stockholders” aka investors, not staff. Staff gets 11 million un-vested shares to Instagram’s employees. The shares will vest over a three year period. They have an “aggregate fair value of $194 million.” So... Facebook’s final payment for Instagram totals $715 million.http://thenextweb.com/facebook/2012/10/24/final-cost-to-facebook-to-purchase-instagram-715-million/

iaCarphone Warehouse made the LG Nexus 4 available for pre-order. The device's specs were listed as a 4.7-inch display with a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor along with 8GB of onboard storage, but no microSD option. It's Windows 8 Launch day!
- Sinofsky's Tiled-based baby is the new face of Windows starting today
- Reactions are mixed about the software. Gartner predicts 90% of enterprises will stay away from Windows 8 through 2015.
- MS livestreamed its launch events at 11:15 am Eastern from New York City and launch Windows 8.
- Sinofsky trying to explain RT: WinRT will work with your printers! 420M hardware devices: storage, displays, printers. Demos of tablets and ultrabooks running Win8.
- Win8 reconnects to WiFi in 1 second.
- Microsoft has partnered with Asus, Dell, Lenovo and Samsung to ensure that Windows RT is a great experience in hardware as well.
- Wired: Wow. That’s really it. There’s no news.

- Meanwhile, Steve Ballmer told the BBC: "Is it fair to say we're going to do more hardware? Obviously we are... Where we see important opportunities to set a new standard, yeah we'll dive in."
- devices running the Windows Phone 7 operating system captured less than a 4% share of global shipments in the July-to-September quarter, according to a study by IDC.

Q: With Steve Ballmer confirming the company is going to do more hardware, is that going to make OEMs back off of MS software in other spaces (desktops, phones)?
HP's Meg Whitman on the Surface:
HP's products will compete well with the Surface, "which doesn't function like a laptop." "It lacks a keyboard you can do real work on," said Whitman. She added that HP's hybrids will be enterprise friendly as the Surface is more consumer focused.

slFrom Typing To Gliding And Back Again: SwiftKey Touchscreen Keyboard Maker Adds Swype-Style Input, Calls It SwiftKey Flowhttp://techcrunch.com/2012/10/25/from-typing-to-gliding-and-back-again-swiftkey-touchscreen-keyboard-maker-adds-swype-style-input-calls-it-swiftkey-flow/VIDEO

- crazy dubstep video showing off how swiftkey flow works. works just like Nuance's Swype, called something different
- SwiftKey says Flow incorporates its existing word prediction engine — (looking at SMSes, emails and social media communications, Swype does this too) to tailor corrections and next-word predictions. The system is correct 30% of next-words before any characters are entered, and 84% of next words after two characters have been entered, says SwiftKey.
- Swiftkey tells TC they've patented this Flow technology
- SwiftKey is a U.K. startup, founded back in 2008. It’s received around 10 million downloads to date, and employs more than 70 people. Its software is available in 44 languages currently.
- Swype users can download its keyboard to compatible devices — but largest market is from being pre-loaded onto devices, mostly Android (SwiftKey also sells its software to OEMs). Earlier this year Swype said it expects its text input technology to be preloaded on more than 100 million devices globally by the end of this year.

- proximity to your ears, nose and mouth is haven for bacteria. - While products are marketed specifically for mobile-phone cleaning, they can sometimes damage the phone's screen coating or fail to remove 100% of the germs.
- A lab tested eight randomly selected phones from a Chicago office for this article. The phones showed no signs of E. coli or staphylococci bacteria. But all phones showed abnormally high numbers of coliforms, a bacteria indicating fecal contamination.

- both BB and Apple say not to use "window cleaners, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia or abrasives."
- Boh Ruffin, a senior applications engineer at Corning Gorilla Glass, says standard off-the-shelf cleaning products, such as alcohol wipes, won't degrade the performance of the glass, though he wouldn't speak to smartphones' performance directly. Hi Tom and the gang,

Just a quick view on the iPad4 update from the UK perspective. Here it's not "just" a processor bump and connector change. The new iPad also adds support for 4G LTE here, which the old New iPad didn't have - both the EE (Everything Everywhere) network, which launches its LTE this month in limited cities, and the Three network next year. It also provides LTE support in Australia (remember the lawsuits?)

http://www.apple.com/ipad/LTE/

Personally, I don't feel burnt, since by the time LTE reached my town the iPad 5 will be out! (plus EE's LTE charges are outrageously expensive!)

Love the show

I thought you guys may be interested to know that it appears the Droid Bionics on Verizon are getting their Ice Cream sandwich updates. It is version 4.0.4, so they did push out the latest released version of Ice Cream Sandwich, and not an early release. It so far is running smoothly and the update was smooth as well. I did lose some icons off some of my screens, but not many. That has been my only negative I have noticed. The lock screen changed, but likely due to all the litigation that has been tossed about about slide to unlock patent and so now it is a wheel where i move the unlock to the activity I want to do. A bit odd, but I am sure I will get use to it soon enough.

Also, something to note, Motorola added in a Tasker style app called Smart Actions. I have not played with it too much, but it appears to handle almost all the same things Tasker can. The only concern I have with it is that it says it can 'learn' your patterns, which could be good or go horribly wrong.

Keep up the great work on the show

Mark
