iaLet's see how those BFFs are doing - of course, I'm talking about the EU and Microsoft. EU regulators say that the lack of browser choice in Windows 7 Service Pack 1 could result in charges against Microsoft. Speaking of browser choice, Reuters reports that the European Commissioner says that "there are no grounds to pursue an investigation" on the lack of browser choice in Windows RT. http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/24/3547080/eu-microsoft-browser-choice-compliance

-Fusion Drive for iMacs & Mac Minis- two drives, a solid state drive (SSD) and a mechanical drive. 128GB SSD in with either a 1TB or a 3TB mechanical drive. not a RAID, managed in OS X. Fusion Drive watches what files and applications you run most regularly and it moves them to the SSD. stuff you don't reference too often goes to mech drive.
- not caching. SSD data not being duplicated. 1TB mechanical drive + 128GB SS = 1.12 TB storage platform.
- all write operations go first to SSD, fast. If better on mech disk OS X will eventually move.
- BACKING UP: Time Machine sees single volume. lose one drive, full restore.
- replacement drives should work, you'd have to reconfigure Fusion Drive
- no built-in GPS on wifi-only iPad Mini. Neither does full-size wifi only iPad, but the Nexus 7 does, and lots of comparisons yesterday on stage. Galaxy tab 2 has gps, Kindle Fire HD doesn't.
APPLE'S IMAC PERFORMANCE AREA: The 21.5-inch iMac comes with 8GB of memory and can be configured online with 16GB. On the 27-inch iMac, 8GB of memory comes standard, and you can upgrade to 16GB or 32GB. Configure and buy your iMac at the Apple Online Store and it will arrive with the memory already installed. Or add more memory to the 27-inch model yourself by popping open the easy-to-access memory panel on the back.
- farhad manjoo at slate: The trouble for Apple is that few people are buying the Kindle Fire or the Nexus 7 because they like the 7-inch size. They’re buying it because they like the price: Both devices sell for less than $200. They’re so cheap only because Amazon and Google don’t care about making a profit on them; they’re both more interested in getting a foot in the tablet market and perhaps making some money on advertising and media sales through the devices. Apple, on the other hand, does not sell anything at cost; its business model is to sell gadgets at a profit, and any other revenue it makes from them (through app purchases, for instance) is just a bonus.

- Wii U new console in 6 years. Nov. 18 in North America, Europe later in the month, Dec. 8 in Japan.
- want to sell 5.5M units by the end of March alongside a goal to sell 24M units of software for the new console during the same period. basic Wii U model for $299 in U.S., more memory version for $349.
- lowered its fiscal-year sales outlook for the 3DS by 5%. steady sales, but price drop
- lowered fiscal-year profit outlook by 70%. ¥6 billion ($75 million) for its fiscal year ending in March, off from its earlier projection for a profit of ¥20 billion. It reduced its full-year revenue outlook to ¥810 billion from a previous target of ¥820 billion.

Profit of 12 cents per share on revenue of $1.262 billion. The consensus was 11 cents and $1.229 billion.
Zuck: "I wanted to dispel this myth that Facebook can't make money on mobile."
- company had 1.01 billion monthly users -- roughly one-seventh the entire world population -- as the end of September, and 604 million of those were accessing Facebook via their smartphones.
- 14 percent of Facebook’s advertising revenue now comes from mobile devices. $150 million this quarter
- ad revenue growth accelerated to 36 percent, up from last quarter’s 28 percent.
- Mobile is misunderstood “I believe over the long term that we’re going to see more monetization from mobile than over the desktop,” says Zuckerberg
- some 70 percent of mobile users return to Facebook on a daily basis compared with just 20 percent of desktop users.
- Pushed sponsored stories as their key mobile strategy " ads built into the News Feeds are "eight times more engaging" as those on the right hand side of Facebook's Web site."Sandberg
- Also talked up ads for apps in news feed for mobile
- On Zynga: "the reality is that there are actually two different stories playing out here... the rest of the games ecosystem has actually been growing."
- Stock went up

.

Zynga Confirms 5 Percent Staff Reduction, 13 Game Closureshttp://allthingsd.com/20121023/zynga-confirms-5-percent-staff-reduction-13-game-closures/

.

- Zynga decided to cut 5% of its staff yesterday during the Apple announcement. That's about 170 employees out of a job
- “sunsetting” 13 games and "significantly reducing" its investment in The Ville
- Boston office shutting down, Japan and UK studios may be shut down, reduction of staff in Austin
- More details will be explained on today's post-earnings webcast

Backstory acc'g to Techcrunch:
- None of the rank and file employees knew where the cuts were coming from until this morning
- Zynga sr. VP of games came to the Boston office yesterday to tell the 50-person studio it was being shut down
- Many Austin employees are getting offers to transfer back to San Francisco and The Ville is being transitioned into maintenance in the company’s offices in India
- The Boston team was about to launch a new product, but that game will never come out (apparently Zynga was excited about the game internally)

Q: Obviously these moves are about increasing profitability. Are we going to see a new direction for Zynga and its games? Is this the wakeup call to make original (not knock-off) games?

Netflix had its earnings report yesterday

Q3: The Numbers
- Netflix signed 1.16 million new U.S. streaming subscribers in the third quarter
- Domestic Streaming total of 25.10M, 23.8M paid subs. Worldwide: 29.41M subs, 27.49M paid subs
- Analysts had predicted 1.43 million, the average of 10 estimates in a Bloomberg survey.
- For the full year, the company expects to add as many as 5.43 million, fewer than the 7 million Hastings had predicted earlier.
- Chief Executive Officer Reed Hastings forecasts 1.3 million to 2 million new U.S. streaming customers this quarter, reaching 27.1 million at most by year end, according to a website statement.
Some substance:
- Peter Kafka of AllThingsD analyzed the letter to shareholders and thinks that Amazon is making headway against Netflix (due to the way the letter phrases Amazon's position as a competitor)
- on HBO: We think it will make strategic sense eventually for HBO to go direct-to-consumer in the U.S., and become more of a competitor to Netflix; so, that is our operating assumption …
- We believe in terms of U.S. viewing, Hulu is currently our closest U.S. competitor.
- TV Everywhere: The implication is that even the best TV Everywhere isn’t yet an attractive alternative to Netflix viewing for Netflix members

- If we are as successful with originals as we think we will be in Q1, then the attention paid to Netflix will be positive and substantial, and we’ll have more people joining Netflix than we would otherwise.
