Hello there -

I heard your discussion on microsoft quarterly results. There is indeed an accounting rule behind the deferral of revenue. The US accounting rules require delivery of a product without any restriction to recognize revenue. Since microsoft restricts partners from selling windows 8 till end of october, they have not delivered the product contractually. Hence they cannot recognize revenue . Hope this helps. Enjoy the show very much. Great job guys.

Mukund
Hi Guys -

I thought I'd quickly answer your question about why Microsoft, or anyone else, might defer income. In GAAP accounting there is a general concept that you match when you incur both a revenue or expenses for a particular activity. So, as an example, say you had a business where you had a customer who paid you a month ahead of you doing the work. Under the revenue recognition principal, you would recognize that income when you did the work. If you didn't do this, it would look like you had a super awesome month (because you got money without outlaying any expenses), followed by a terrible month (because you had expenses without recognizing revenue), when in reality you had two normal months. This concept of matching and timing recognition is one of the most basic building blocks of accrual accounting, and a lot of the other rules (for instance depreciation) are build with the goal of matching in mind. Remember, the basic idea of accounting to show the underlying economic activity of the business.

Source: I'm a graduate of WSU's business school, I'm currently a 3rd year PhD in economics and I own a business (so I actually practice this stuff)
