For $9.99 a month the premium service allows offline ad-free listening. Cloud storage and a "matching" service should follow next year. The service will be available starting Tuesday to Xbox360 Gold subscribers, and then follow on Windows 8 and Windows RT tablets and PCs as well as Windows Phone 8 when those products launch.

The French data protection commissioner, the CNIL, will hold a press conference on Tuesday announcing that together with the data protection chiefs of the other European Union countries, they've determined that Google's changes breached EU law because they did not give users any chance to opt out. "By putting the CNIL in charge of this, the EU was going for blood," says privacy expert Chris Watson. Xbox Music Is Useless on Xbox
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/15/xbox-music-is-useless-on-xbox

- It will be preinstalled on all Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 machines,

- Xbox Music users will be able to create playlists of tracks and have those automatically synchronize across multiple devices logged into the same account
- Can send songs from a Win8 device to 360

Pricing and availability:
- free w/ads ONLY on Win8, available in 15 markets
- Free streaming limited to 10/hours momth after 6 months;
- $9.99/month = unlimited play, and pay-per song gets you 256kbps DRM-free MP3s, in 22 markets

- If you're currently a Zune subscriber, you can get in tomorrow
- WIn7 users: you get continued access to Zune Music. The client on Win7 and WP7 won't change. It'll still be Zune, doesn't have the same cloud functions, no access to free streaming

Q: What's your opinion on MS treatment of Win7 users w/Xbox Music?
Plans for Xbox Music:
Microsoft is promising a number of features coming in 2013, including more social integration, scan-and-match functionality, and a cloud-based locker that will separatefrom SkyDrive. So-called "reach" clients like iOS and Android are also due "within the coming year" and a web-based client is on the roadmap.

- Biting commentary on IGN complaining that even though it's called "Xbox Music" it would cost around $180 to get access ($60 for Xbox Live Gold, and $120 for Music per year). Win8 is the only platform that gets it for free.

slDark Social: We Have the Whole History of the Web Wronghttp://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2012/10/dark-social-we-have-the-whole-history-of-the-web-wrong/263523/

.

- Alexis Madrigal over at The Atlantic has a theory - chunk of traffic coming to any site isn't being shared on Twitter, FB, etc. It's being IM'd, coming from a secure site, or from an email distribution list, etc
- calls it Dark Social. it's unaccounted for
- real-time web analytics firm, Chartbeat had a meeting w The Atlantic. showed how they were splitting visitors without referrer data into two categories.
1- go to a homepage (theatlantic.com) or a subject landing page (theatlantic.com/politics).
2- go to any other page, following some sort of link, long complicated string. Chartbeat calling these people DIRECT SOCIAL.
- over half The Atlantic's traffic is coming through this way
- what about other sites? Chartbeat says looking across broader media properties, almost 69% of social referrals were dark! Facebook came in second at 20%. Twitter was down at 6%.
- TAKE AWAY: optimizing for social (FB pages, Twitter presence, etc) accounts for less than half your traffic, but adds a lot of context, metadata.
"We're not giving our personal data in exchange for the ability to share links with friends. Massive numbers of people -- a larger set than exists on any social network -- already do that outside the social networks. Rather, we're exchanging our personal data in exchange for the ability to publish and archive a record of our sharing."

Subj: The dangers of Niche Searching

Hi Tnt crew, Marlon "GuyfromTrinidad" here, I just listened to Friday's episode and like Tom I use Amazon when i search for the prices of products, however it can have unsuspecting side effects.A month ago I was checking the prices of cheap unlocked phones for a friend and a couple of days later this came in my email. [Marlon included a link to an email from Amazon showing him all kinds of deals on unlocked phones]

Thought you might get a kick out of that.

Hi,

I was listening to your Friday show about Google TV version 3, and about how all the audience members will be yelling at their TV screen.

With Google's experience of voice recognition, I submit that Google will likely Build in a microphone into their next remote. This remote paired with the television to receive commands to navigate the channels, search for TV shows and movies, etc.

In fact, if you are listening Google, You might think about the term "whisper search". That way you won't wake up your wife or husband or kids When trying to search for Game of Thrones.

Just a thought,

George

.

Hey TNT Crew,

I remember awhile back when Facebook announced "Sponsored" posts where users could pay to have their post pushed to the top of all their friend's news feed. I, like you guys, thought it was a laughable idea that someone would be so attention starved that they would pay Facebook to have their 'friends' read their post.

Well, promoted posts just today rolled out to me. As it so happens I'm trying to rent out one of my bedrooms and was already advertising that fact on Facebook. It occurred to me that instead of just posting and hoping people see my post I could promote the post and make sure that all of my friends see it (even though who wouldn't normally look at my wall or see my posts).

For a mere $7 it seems like a good deal if I can find someone I already know (or someone who knows someone I know) to live with insted of some random guy from Craigslist or a paper add.
