slIntel CEO Paul Otellini told employees at an event in Taiwan that Windows 8 is being released before it’s fully ready, but that it's the right move, since Microsoft can make improvements to the software after it ships. But not everyone sees it that way. Some analysts with fresh memories of the Vista launch back in 2007 say the level of bugs and fine tuning yet to be done on the OS are troubling. Earlier this month Intel announced that it’s cutting its third-quarter revenue forecast, but that no layoffs are necessasry, and that the market will grow in 2013. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-25/windows-8-bugs-plaguing-microsoft-intel-ceo-said-to-tell-staff.html

iaThe Verge reports that Apple ditched Google Maps even though the deal still had one year to go before it expired. Goolge did not expect the move and the Verge's sources say that caused Google to scramble to create an iOS Maps app which won't be available for several months. Apple got rid of Google Maps partly because it felt that the iOS version of maps lagged behind the Android version - particularly the lack of turn-by-turn navigation. http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/25/3407614/apple-over-a-year-left-on-google-maps-contract-google-maps-ios-app

tmYou may have seen DDR4 RAM in production already but now it's official. The JEDEC Solid State Technology Association has released the official standard. DDR4's per-pin data rate standard is 1.6 gigatransfers per second (GT/s) at the minimum and 3.2 GT/s at the top-end, although this cap is expected to increase as it did with DDR3. If that all sounded like acronym vomit to you, here's the part to really care about. FASTER Speeds will begin at 2133MHz and BATTERY LIFE it will operate at lower power.http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/26/final-ddr4-specification/

slSamsung's mobile chief Shin Jong-Kyun says Google chairman Eric Schmidt is set to meet with Samsung execs in South Korea this week around the launch of the Nexus 7 there, in steps to further Google’s involvement in Android litigation, as reported by The Korea Times. Samsung hasn't let the $1B US ruling in favor of Apple get it down it's both increased its handset sales target to 400m for 2012, and is attempting to block sales of the iPhone 5 based on alleged infringement of LTE patents.http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-schedules-strategy-meeting-with-googles-schmidt-over-apples-android-war-26249240/

iaDuck and cover, folks. Security Explorations has found a flaw in Java that would let someone take complete control of PCs and Macs. The flaw is present in Java SE 5, 6, and 7 - that's the last eight years of Java. Security Explorations says the flaw puts one billion users at risk as the team got the exploit to work on Firefox, Chrome, IE, Opera, and Safari on an up-to-date WIndows 7 machine. The good news is the flaw was not found to be exploited in the wild yet. http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/09/yet-another-java-flaw-allows-complete-bypass-of-security-sandbox/

tmYesterday california Governor Jerry Brown signed Bill SB1298 into law formalizing legal permissions and safety standards for cars to drive themselves, joining other states like Nevada and Florida. slThat Samsung Galaxy S3 vulnerability we talked about earlier this week? Fixable with an over-the-air update. Samsung says users can install an OTA security update that will protect them from a vulnerability that could allow someone to remotely delete all of their personal data. The flaw, 1st demonstrated last week at a security conference in Argentina, affects Samsung's TouchWiz UI which allows executed commands on the device's keypad. Most software dialers require users to hit the "send" button to complete a code, but Samsung's software does not. Thankfully, the fix is in. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57520467-94/samsung-offers-up-patch-for-galaxy-s3-remote-wipe-vulnerability/

On Tuesday TI's VP for embedded processing Greg Delagi told investors the consumer market is less attractive accoring to Reuters. iaHTC and O2 will sell a new flagship smartphone without a charger soon. No charger?! That's an outrage! No it's not. O2 says that 70% of customers who buy phones already have the relevant charger. The HTC phone will ship with a MicroUSB to USB cable, so even if you don't have a charger, you can go get one. This is a trial, as O2 wants to remove all chargers from phones sold by 2015. http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/26/3410410/o2-htc-new-smartphone-no-charger

iaMegaUpload founder teases new music service, Megaboxhttp://news.cnet.com/8301-17939_109-57520592-2/megaupload-founder-teases-new-music-service-megabox/VIDEO

Kim Dotcom Teases Megabox, Reveals Exclusive Artists?http://torrentfreak.com/kim-dotcom-teases-megabox-reveals-exclusive-artists-120926/

.

- Kim DotCom posted a video on YouTube showing off a Megabox preview
- Megabox is a music service and some details are seen in the video. The goal of Megabox is to give the public access to free music and compensate artists through advertising revenue.
- It looks as though artists and consumers can create separate profiles
- Artists can share as much music as they like
- Megabox would allow artists to sell their own music and keep 90% of the revenue
- The video shows an “Exclusive Artists” section. The artists shown in that section are The Black Keys, Rusko, Two Fingers and Will.i.am (could be just a mockup)
- TorrentFreak asked Dotcom if those were indeed launch partner, but Dotcom said he couldn’t share that info yet
- The way Megabox makes money - the Megakey app: it works like an ad blocker, but replaces a percentage of ads with Mega’s ads. If you don’t install the app, you’ve got to buy the music.

Hi guys,

As an experimental psychologist I am more excited about the coming website that will have slices of HM's brain. Henry Molaison had area CA1 of his hippocampus lesioned in the early 50s to control epilepsy. They did not know at the time that the Hp is very important in consolidating episodic memories. When Canadian psychologist, Brenda Milner of the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill tested HM on his episodic memory he was found to have none past the operation. She had to introduce herself to him each time she worked with him, each day. He could learn stuff, but he would not remember learning it.

This discovery was very important to the development of cognitive neuroscience. Brenda actually was a guest on an early Futures in Biotech with Marc Pelletier and me. As an aside, she is a big Montreal Canadiens fan…. (and I am sure she is as upset as I am about the lockout in the NHL).

Tom,

You misspoke on Tuesday's show regarding Einstein's brain. He didn't donate it to science, it was stolen by the doctor that performed the autopsy. Thomas Harvey understood the significance of Einstein's brain, so he stuck it in a jar and took it home. The whole story of how he kept it in a mayonnaise jar for years and how he drove around the country with it in his car is kind of funny. Here's a pretty good explanation on io9 that follows other sources I have read:

I work for an MSO (don’t disclose my email account). TiVo hardware is twice and even three times as expensive for MSO’s to purchase than other vender set top boxes. Making ROI to high. Add in the chronic compatibility and VOD issues and this box is not a good fit for cable providers to issue. Yes TiVo has many compelling features that I truly enjoyed but in the end it’s a retail device. Hopefully someday there will be a low cost, high spec, and user friendly UI unit brought to market. That will meet both needs of MSO and the features for customers.

I love listening to your tech news, but I am often amazed at how different my life is from yours.

The Tesla story really make me laugh out loud. There's no way I would ever drive a car that forced me to stop every 3 hours to charge for 30 minutes. First, who drives only 60 mph on a road trip? The speed limit on most freeways is 70 mph and you know most people go at least 5 mph over the speed limit. So I infer that at those speeds I'd have to stop to recharge more often than every 3 hours. So let's say every 2.5 hours. Seriously?

I live in Atlanta. My sister lives in middle Florida, 6 - 7 hours away. I have often gotten in the car around 3:00 to drive down to her house and not stopped until I got to her house (or, rather, the gas station closest to her house). Granted, this was back when I drove a Camry instead of the stupid Grand Marquis I'm stuck driving now. But based on the fact that I'm annoyed that my current car runs out of gas in less than 7 hours, there's NO WAY I would ever buy a car that ran out of charge in 2.5 hours.

Obviously, the story is worth reporting. But the solution is not even close to being realistic yet.

Meredith
<-- might be good with the tesla story up in discussion
