slResearchers have identified a security weakness that allows them to hijack web browser sessions even while behind HTTPS encryption that banks and e-commerce sites use to secure sensitive transactions. The technique exploits sessions protected by the Secure Sockets Layer and Transport Layer Security protocols when they use one of two data-compression schemes for easing network congestion or faster page loading. Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox are all apparently immune to the attack, but smartphone browsers and other applications that rely on TLS are believed to remain vulnerable.http://arstechnica.com/security/2012/09/crime-hijacks-https-sessions/

Apple's dock connector change is awful, don't kid yourselveshttp://news.cnet.com/8301-31322_3-57511687-256/apples-dock-connector-change-is-awful-dont-kid-yourselves/

.

- VP Phil Schiller - Passbook alone does what most customers want and works without existing merchant payment systems. "It’s not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem. Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today.” NFC is in high-end phones, like the Galaxy S III and Nokia 920, but consumers don’t have many apps and use and merchants still need to make more investments in hardware to handle NFC payments.
- Schiller on wireless charging: wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it’s not clear how much convenience they add. The widely-adopted USB cord, meanwhile, can charge in wall outlets, computers and even on airplanes
- Schiller said it simply wasn’t possible to build products as thin as the new iPhones and iPods without changing the cord. Hence, the new “Lightning” connector. Schiller said that Apple is serious about the 9-pin connector. “This is the new connector for many years to come,” he said.
Molly Wood at Cnet: proprietary connector is bad for consumers/environment: Apple was, as of last year, actually supporting the International Electronics Commission's push for a universal, micro-USB charging standard. Lightning to USB is USB 2.0. not fast. not all 30-pin devices will be supported, and it won't carry video or iPod-out signals, or analog audio signals.

iPhone 5: Launching in 9 countries Sept. 21, 22 more on Sept. 28, and reaching a total of more than 100 countries by the end of December. Fiscal Q4 ends 9/29. PING DIES 9/30

Meet the Mobile Device Privacy Act: A new bill to protect mobile consumers that is already causing a stirhttp://thenextweb.com/us/2012/09/13/meet-mobile-device-privacy-act-a-strict-new-bill-protect-mobile-consumers-already-causing-stir/

.

Sen. Patrick Leahy introducing a bill today to the Senatae Judiciary Committee to give email on remote servers same privacy protection as at home - revising the 1988 Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).
- Under 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy act email not downloaded after 180 days is considered "abandoned" and doesn't require a warrant. Not good for cloud services. Leahy's bill would require probable cause.
Wiretapping WON'T require a warrant for five more years. 301 to 118 decision, the US House of Representatives has voted in favor of the FISA Amendments Act Reauthorization Act of 2012 - Now goes to the Senate.
- FISA is supervised by secret FISA courts whose proceedings are confidential. EFF is suing for info on how NSA has used the law.
Rep. Ed Markey proposing the Mobile Device Privacy Act. Consumers must know who is tracking, where info going and how it's being used. Also security provisions and ways to block.
- Fines for violations of $1,000 to $3,000 -- Likely won't see action until next year.
QUESTION: How worried are you about your privacy?

When can I use SPDY networking protocol?http://caniuse.com/spdy

.

Compression Ratio Info-leak Made Easy (CRIME) - devised by researchers Juliano Rizzo and Thai Duong
- Browser must support TLS (Transport Layer Security) Compression OR SPDY (Google adn Twitter)
- Site accessed must also support SPDY or TLS 42% of sites support TLS (Qualys told AT)
- IE, Chrome and Firefox believed immune.
- Smartphone browsers and other software that relies on TLS may be vulnerable
- Use of TLS compression in smaller browsers unknown. Safari unknown (doe snot use SPDY)
- Video by researchers showed GitHub, Dropbox and Stripe.com succumbing to attack. They have sinced disabled compression.
- Same researchers discovered BEAST last year. Mix clear-text under attackers control with the encrypted text to see how it reacts, deduce content - brute force against session cookie, impersonate user from there. Take s afew minutes.
- CRIME forces a web browser to compress and encrypt requests that contain attacker-controlled data that is combined with the cookie secret. If one of the requests produces fewer encrypted network packets, that's an indication there's more redundancy in the request, and hence the attacker data and the secret data have more information in common.
- Rizzo and Duong are scheduled to demonstrate CRIME on September 21 at the Ekoparty security conference in Buenos Aires.
Aim of this attack is likely state sponsors not coffee shop snoopers

slStreaming media could have larger carbon footprint than plastic discshttp://paidcontent.org/2012/09/13/streaming-media-could-have-larger-carbon-footprint-than-plastic-discs/

.

- UK-based MusicTank (network group for music industry) has released report on “the hidden cost of digital music consumption”, which examines energy used by the emerging cloud media access model.
- report author Dagfinn Bach: “Streaming or downloading 12 tracks, without compression, just 27 times by one user would, in energy terms, equate to the production and shipping of one physical 12-track CD album. Repeated streaming of individual tracks may not necessarily be a desirable long-term solution with respect to energy consumption for the life cycle of a sound recording.”
- Bach also calculates current YouTube energy consumption is around 0.1 percent of 2010 global electricity levels, rising to one percent by 2013.
- MusicTank holding a conf to address concerns on October 11
Bach forecasts global data traffic hitting 1 yottabyte by 2027 could require more than 1/5 of the planet’s 2010 electricity consumption – something which “depends on sprawling server farms and a complex, energy- sapping network infrastructure”.
- solutions?: Spotify’s app already has a kind of built-in local cache to avoid the necessity to repeat song streams. Bach says “a ‘close-to-consumer’ cloud solution might be the most environmentally-friendly option” for online content delivery.
- A 1 petabyte drive capable of storing all the songs ever recorded could soon cost just $100 if you follow Moore’s Law. if entertainment industry wasn't so locked down and drm-crazy, they could offer all songs on a drive, minus the metadata required to play the songs it contains, which itself could be accessed only via paid subscription from the cloud.

Maybe you have in the past but no one has mentioned talking to your computer is quite the privacy predicament is it not? Like Tom said, I don't want to talk to people let alone my computer, but if I'm talking to my computer everyone around me knows exactly what I'm doing. I don't want anyone to know I'm emailing TNT, that's embarrassing! Speaking of embarrassing, who wants to be sitting in the corner of a coffee shop talking to themselves - at least that's what it looks like from the outside - maybe worse than talking on a Bluetooth device? Sure talking to your computer is great for disabled people but personally I think its what 3D TV's are... a gimmick.

I like the show
