tmIDC and Gartner Group released their Q1 shipment numbers for the Global PC market and it is not pretty. IDC showed a 14% year over year decline in Global PC shipments, the worst drop since 1994 when IDC began tracking the market. Gartner showed an 11% year over year decline, their worst report since Q1 2001. Every region in the world dropped. Lenovo was the only manufacturer to have gains in both reports.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57578914-92/pcs-hit-by-an-ugly-quarterly-drop-as-windows-8-flops/

slThe Wall Street Journal reports that Microsoft is developing a smaller version of its Surface tablet that will launch later this year. Microsoft recently altered the Windows 8 hardware requirements to permit smaller, cheaper screens. WSJ also reports Microsoft is working on its own phone, but was unclear on plans to bring it to market.http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/04/wsj-microsoft-developing-a-7-inch-surface-coming-later-this-year/

iaDuring a presentation at the Hack in the Box conference in Amsterdam, security researcher Hugo Teso detailed that it is possible to misdirect an airplane using an Android app called PlaneSploit. Teso was able to feed false navigation information to a simulated jet that he built out of spare jet parts he bought on eBay. He was able to control the steering of the jet while the plane was in "autopilot" mode. Anyone else freaked out?http://blogs.computerworld.com/cybercrime-and-hacking/22036/hacker-uses-android-remotely-attack-and-hijack-airplane

tmChilling effects anyone? Remember yesterday we talked about Brian K. Vaughan's 12th issue of the Comic Saga being blocked from the Comixology iOS app because it ran afoul of Apple's rules? Turns out Apple never blocked it, Comixology just assumed Apple would. And yesterday, after Apple reportedly contacted the company, Comixology apologized and promised it will publish the comic. Saga's Brian K. Vaughan also apologized for being led to believe it was Apple's fault and said he's just glad the whole thing got cleared up. Weird.http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4210228/brian-k-vaughan-apologizes-for-blaming-apple-in-saga-controversy

iaTo potentially end a two-year antitrust investigation, Google formally submitted concessions to the EU after discussions with the EU antitrust authority. The EU sought to "secure legally binding commitments" from Google since Google has a market share of over 80% in that area according to comScore. The concessions were not detailed, but a European Commission spokesman said that it will now seek feedback from market players on Google's proposals. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/11/eu-google-idUSL5N0CY2SM20130411

tmSpring is in the air. Birds are singing, snow is melting and CISPA rises from it's Congressional grave to haunt the Internet again. The cybersecurity law passed the US House last year then died in the Senate under threat of a Presidential veto. Yesterday a modified bill passed out of the House Intelligence Committee and is expected to reach a House vote next week. CISPA would protect private companies from liability when sharing data with the US government to combat cybercrime. Critics say it doesn't include sufficient privacy protections.http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4210788/cispa-passes-committee-again

slTechCrunch reports leaders from Facebook, Google, and others announced they’re forming a political advocacy group called FWD.us pronounced Forward U. S.. tmI've always thought the Samsung Galaxy Note needed a better name for its large size. Seems Samsung was reserving that better name for an even bigger phone. Meet the Samsung Galaxy Mega. It comes in 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch models which Samsung hilariously claims can still fit in your pocket. So buy on the baggy side. The Mega comes with an unspecified HD display, 1.7GHz processor Android 4.2, LTE, 8 or 16GB storage and an 8-megapixel camera. Samsung didn't announce a price, but it's coming to Europe and Russia in May. http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57579040-94/samsung-goes-mega-with-two-new-galaxy-smartphones/

iaExclusive: Microsoft's next Xbox will take over your TV, interact with your cable boxhttp://www.theverge.com/2013/4/10/4208970/next-xbox-tv-entertainment-plans

.

- The Verge reports that the next Xbox will control your cable box
- Citing multiple unnamed sources, The Verge says the next Xbox will have an HDMI pass-through similar to Google TV devices that will allow MS to place an overlay UI on top of existing TV channels."
- This is supposed to be a "Key part of the next-generation Xbox."
- Since MS has partnerships with content providers, the Xbox would be able to go further than Google TV.

More Xbox info:
- The box will req an always on connection to use the entertainment services
- the next gen Kinect will also play a role in the TV focus: next Kinect will detect multiple people and their eyes to pause content when a viewer turns their head away from their TV (the Samsung Galaxy S4 does this).
Q: Do you think this will be a selling point for the next Xbox? Does this show that gaming is a secondary concern for the consoles?

- White House has not responded to an anti-CISPA petition at Whitehouse.gov

Google’s Forthcoming Chat Client “Babel” Shows Up All Over The Web In Screenshots, Bug Reports, Forums & More

http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/10/googles-forthcoming-chat-client-babel-shows-up-all-over-the-web-in-screenshots-bug-reports-forums-more/

.

- TechRadar grabbed some screenshots of "Google Babel"
- TechRadar says its source is new, but claims the source works for Google. So take this with a grain of salt.
- The screenshots are literally pictures of a screen and they aren't vey exciting. Flat Google design, instead of just text, you have cards (kind of like chat bubbles)

The Service:
- Droid-Life says it got its hands on a Google memo and has details on the Babel Service
- Babel would combine GTalk, Hangouts and Messenger. Google Voice integration would come later.
- There will be a desktop app, a Chrome app, an Android app and a "first class iOS experience"
- Notifications would be synced. You'll get notifications on all of your devices, but when you check it on one device, the notification would disappear on the others.
- Messages will include more than text w/over 800 emoji options

Q: Are you excited for the kitten emojis, Sarah?

slFoursquare Gets $41 Million Investment, Time to Growhttp://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-04-11/foursquare-gets-41-million-investment-time-to-grow

.

- This summer, Foursquare will let all the merchants it works with buy ads and will expand its sales team to about 40 people (from 10). Foursquare is also updating the app to highlight its search function, something Crowley admits was “buried” in previous designs.
- shopper goes to Best Buy (BBY), Samsung will be able to send them an ad for its TVs.
- More than 40,000 applications have built Foursquare’s platform into their app, rather than building their own location databases. This lets Foursquare collect data from popular apps including Path, a mobile social network; Vine, Twitter’s video feature; and Instagram (FB), the photo-sharing network. A new revenue-sharing deal with Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) allows people to upload their credit-card information and get discounts.
- When someone gets sent an ad from a nearby coffee shop after searching for a latte on Foursquare, between 3 percent and 5 percent of the time she’ll click on the ad or visit the shop within 72 hours, according to Steven Rosenblatt, Foursquare’s chief revenue officer.

iaHey TNT Crew,

I'm a cord cutter without the time to watch live TV, and I gave up torrenting years ago. If it isn't on Netflix, Hulu+, or Amazon Prime, I don't watch it. That said, if Aereo came to my area I would absolutely return to watching shows from the major networks.

While I don't represent most consumers, Aereo could be future-proofing for a market that is moving away from live TV. Add in some viewing metrics from Aereo and suddenly the major networks are more capable of delivering high quality content to a large audience.

Their need to control distribution is throwing away a huge opportunity.

Thanks guys,
-Wes-
