tmT-Mobile extended its trade-in program to iPhones starting with the launch of the iPhone 5 on the network this Friday. You can trade in an iPhone 4, 4S or 5 for a credit. The credit eliminates the $99 down for the iPhone 5 and lowers the $20 a month payoff amount by 1-7 dollars depending on which model you trade in.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57578729-37/ahead-of-iphone-5-launch-t-mobile-touts-trade-in-program/

slHide your apps, hide your wives, Apple's out there bannin er'body. the latest is app discovery app AppGratis, removed from the App Store for violating clauses 2.25 and 5.6 of its App Store Review Guidelines, which forbid apps that promote apps other than a developer’s own, and prohibit developers from using push notifications to deliver marketing messages. AppGratis is NOT the only app to offer these features, and All Things D reports this is just the beginning. Meanwhile, Brian K. Vaughan comic Saga #12 would not be for sale through Comixology or any other third-party app on iOS because of what vaughan says is imagery less graphic than what's been allowed in the past.http://allthingsd.com/20130410/apples-ouster-of-appgratis-is-just-the-start-of-an-app-store-crackdown/

iaThe lack of demand for iPhones hurt iPhone manufacturer Hon Hai. The company's sales were down 19% for the first quarter compared to last year at the same time. An analyst for KGI Securities said they expected a quarterly decline for Hon Hai, but not a yearly one and that "This shows that Hon Hai's revenue depends too much on Apple..." 60 to 70% of Hon Hai's revenue comes from putting together iPads and iPhones. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/04/10/us-honhai-sales-idUSBRE9390B020130410

tmSeveral Tech news Today audience members net us an email they got from Vudu yesterday announcing a password reset. Apparently several hard drives were stolen from the company on March 24. The drives only contained the last 4 digits of credit card numbers but did contain names, email, addresses and encrypted passwords, hence the password reset. Vudu also encouraged users to change any passwords at other services that were identical to the one they previously used at Vudu.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22092059

slAre Apple and Yahoo partnering up to get more of Yahoo’s data, such as sports and news integreated with Siri on the iPHone and iPad? That's what The Wall Street Journal reports, ciiting sources that say the companies are at least talking about it. iOS already makes use of Yahoo Finance on the built-in Stocks App and taps Yahoo Sports for Siri, but yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is reportedly working to get her company’s web services loaded onto more devices. And the timing's good since apple's moved away from Google, and Yahoo going up against Google alone is a tough fight. Apple has already baked Twitter into iOS 5 and added built-in Facebook functionality in iOS 6.http://thenextweb.com/apple/2013/04/10/apple-and-yahoo-reportedly-in-talks-to-expand-iphone-and-siri-access-to-yahoo-sports-news-data/

ia9to5Mac received a tip by someone who did some digging into the beta version of Mac OS 10.8.4 and found support for 802.11ac wireless. There is no such code in 10.8.3 and current Apple products don't ship with with 802.11ac. This would be in line with older reports that say that Apple will bring the next generation of WiFi to its devices. The WiFi standard has yet to be ratified with the IEEE. http://gizmodo.com/5994244/os-x-code-reveals-apples-plans-for-super+fast-wi+fi

tmPiper-Jaffray's biannual ten survey came out Tuesday afternoon and you can pretty much make the data say whatever you want. For instance, Apple gained popularity among teens for smartphones as did Android and Windows Phone. Beats by Dre are by far the most popular headphones. Favorite website is Amazon. Facebook, Tumblr and YouTube's popularity like totally declined while is it me or did Twitter and Google Plus get hotter? And where did Reddit and Tumblr transfer in from? Facebook's still going to win Prom. Yolo.http://www.piperjaffray.com/private/pdf/Taking_Stock_Teach-in_Spring_2013_MV_2.pdf

slWe talked about HP's plans for next-gen server farms, and now Intel's shared plans for a more efficient architecture that separates CPU, storage, power, and networking resources into individual components that can be swapped out as needed. Power and cooling would be shared across CPUs, and Server, memory, network, and storage resources would all be shared across the rack. Intel's also building an interconnect that's capable of 100Gbps. The first version of this reference architecture is expected to be published sometime in 2014.http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/04/intel-wants-to-kill-the-traditional-server-rack-with-100gbps-links/

tmOne take on Google Fiber is that it's meant to spur competition in broadband development. In Austin it's already working. Hours after Google announced it would bring 1Gbps fiber connectivity to the capital of Texas, AT&T announced that they too looked forward to getting the same deal wight he government that Google got and will bring competitively-priced Gigabit fiber to Austin as well. Austin City councilwoman Laura Morrison told GigaOm Google has the same deal AT&T already had. Whatever. iaAccording to Reuters, Apple's got TSMC working on a trial version of Apple's next-generation processor for mobile devices. Reuters' source says that "TSMC has got all the authorization and details ready. Whether Apple puts in a formal order will depend on the yield rate." A transition to TSMC would mean Apple would have to redesign the chipset due to patent issues with Samsung since Samsung helped develop the processors that Apple currently uses. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/07/15/us-tsmc-apple-idUSTRE76E0MZ20110715

YAHOO SOURCE: Here's The Real Reason Marissa Mayer Bought A 17-Year-Old's Startup For $30 millionhttp://www.businessinsider.com/why-marissa-mayer-bought-a-30m-startup-2013-4?op=1

.

- WSJ reports that Yahoo and Apple are in discussions for new partnerships for iOS
- The new arrangement would include deals to get more content from Yahoo News either pre-loaded on Apple devices or through Siri
- The WSJ says no deal is imminent citing "people with direct knowledge of the companies' relationship"

- Meanwhile BusinessInsider.com thinks it finally has a handle on the Yahoo acquisition of Summly the news aggregation app. BI says that Summly didn't have a lot of users or revnues, but Summly did have a partnership with SRI International.
- SRI had equity in Summly. (SRI also once held equity in Siri)
- According to the site, Yahoo calls Summly "Yahoo's Siri"

Q: Sounds like a good deal for Yahoo if it becomes a reality - any downsides? Is Apple just being pig-headed in distancing itself from Google?
- Yahoo already provides data for iOS's Stocks and Weather apps. Yahoo data is also in Siri

slApple’s Ouster of AppGratis Is Just the Start of an App Store Crackdownhttp://allthingsd.com/20130410/apples-ouster-of-appgratis-is-just-the-start-of-an-app-store-crackdown/

- app discovery app AppGratis pulled from app store this week for "developer guideline violations." Simon Dawlat, founder of AppGratis says he’s “in total disbelief”, just a few days earlier Apple approvedl iPad version
- yanked for violating clauses 2.25 and 5.6 of its App Store Review Guidelines, which forbid apps that promote apps other than a developer’s own, and prohibit developers from using push notifications to deliver marketing messages. appgratis does both, but so do a bunch of other apps
- john packowski at ATD says he's been told Apple feels that these apps threaten the legitimacy of the App Store charts by providing a way for developers to spend their way to a high ranking. Apple did something similar in 2011, when it rejected a number of applications running incentivized app installs within their apps, undermines the integrity of the App Store by cluttering it with alternative storefronts, possibly screwing with Apple’s integration of Chomp, the app search and discovery company it acquired earlier last year.
- Brian K. Vaughan, maker comic Saga, issued a statement saying that Saga #12 would not be for sale through Comixology or any other third-party app on iOS.
- "Unfortunately, because of two postage stamp-sized images of gay sex, Apple is banning tomorrow’s Saga #12 from being sold through any iOS apps. This is a drag, especially because our book has featured what I would consider much more graphic imagery in the past, but there you go."
- Image can't sell Saga #12 through Comixology on iOS, but users can buy it on the web or an Android app, then sync it over. But there's a more curious wrinkle to the case: Image has told us that you'll also be able to find it on Apple's own iBookstore. That's precisely what happened with Sex, a previous Image comic that was banned from third-party apps but not iBooks.

- says NY-Connecticutt for now because that's where Aereo operates
- Univision also threatening to pull OTA signal. says going to cable-only would have a big impact on its viewership. In a press release the Spanish-language broadcaster noted that Hispanics watch free TV through an antenna at twice the rate of the average viewer.
- Steve Pruett, the chairman of the Fox affiliate board of governors, told AP at NAB over 200 stations are "on board" with a threat to transition to pay TV if Aereo keeps reselling Fox's signal without paying for rights.

- SimCity server issues, after last year's MAss Effect 3 ending controversy.
- Consumerist Q: When we live in an era marked by massive oil spills, faulty foreclosures by bad banks, and rampant consolidation in the airline and telecom industry, what does it say about EA’s business practices that so many people have — for the second year in a row — come out to hand it the title of Worst Company In America?
- EA COO Peter Moore's answer: The tallest trees catch the most wind. Also "Origin is breaking records for revenue" And implied everyone who hates EA is a homophobe
- Ben at Penny Arcade: We don’t hate them because we’re homophobes, we hate them because they destroy companies we love. We hate them because they release poor games. We hate them because they claim our hate doesn’t matter as long as we give them our money.

I'm one of those people who still use the disc plan on Netflix. You know, the side of their business where all the profits are made.

Wouldn't it be great if there were an exclusive period where the DVD version of House of Cards was only available to Netflix disc renters, much like the streaming version is only available to Netflix streaming subscribers?
