iaYou know what they say about AMD chips - once you pop, you can't stop. AMD will be at the heart of the PS4 and according to a Bloomberg report, AMD will also be inside the next version of the Xbox. This AMD chip would be based on the x86 architecture, which should make developers happy. The Xbox 360 uses an IBM PowerPC processor. I wonder if this will cause problems for backwards compatibility.http://news.cnet.com/8301-10797_3-57578591-235/amd-chips-to-make-their-way-to-next-xbox-console/

slAlmost 60,000 apps have been removed from Google Play, probably because a number of apps don't meet the store’s anti-spam policies. Some may have been pulled by the publishers themselves. But not 60,000... many of these were pulled by Google directly. This is the highest number of apps it has removed in a single month, suggesting a closer focus on apps which contravene its terms & conditions.http://9to5google.com/2013/04/09/60000-apps-zapped-from-google-play-in-suspected-anti-spam-move/

iaApple's big Mac Pro revamp to debut this month, report sayshttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57578520-37/apples-big-mac-pro-revamp-to-debut-this-month-report-says/

.

- According to Mac Daily News, Apple will finally update the Mac Pro as early as this month, but that date could be June
- A Cnet source says Apple doesn't have an April event planned for the Mac Pro (that's no surprise)
- The last update to the MP was last June 11, 2012 with a processor bump and more RAM
- The buyer's guide at MacRumors says the MP is refreshed on average at about 427 days. This current MP is 302 days old.
- What was missing in that last update: No thunderbolt, no USB 3.0, faster SATA

Q: What features does Apple need put into a new MP? Did Apple miss an opportunity not refreshing the line during NAB?

iaMicrosoft reportedly developing Windows Blue for PC, mobile OS integration
http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20130408PD207.html

Tom Warren's reactionhttps://twitter.com/tomwarren/status/321367375393980417

.

Is Microsoft integrating Windows Phone and Windows? You’d hope so http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/04/is-microsoft-integrating-windows-phone-and-windows-youd-hope-so/

.

No Evidence Microsoft Is Merging Windows with Phone
http://windowsitpro.com/windows-8/no-evidence-microsoft-merging-windows-phone

.

- A DigiTimes report says that Microsoft's Windows Blue is an independent project that is working on merging Windows for the PC with Windows Phone.
- The purpose of merging the two would be to compete with Android and Chrome
- The same report says MS is developing another OS that will be next version of Windows (8.1)
- This report got plenty of reactions in the tech world.
- Tom Warren, editor at The Verge, says "Windows Blue does not merge Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone into a single product. Do not listen to DigiTimes. They're drunk."
- ArsTechnica's Peter Bright parsed the DigiTimes piece and found it interesting that DigiTimes redefines the current understanding of Windows Blue - Blue has widely been reported as Windows 8.1. The DigiTimes report separates the two.
- What does the "Blue" designation mean anyway? Paul Thurrott says lots of products have a "blue" version coming including WP
- Paul also says there's no evidence MS is merging the two OSs, but he says he thinks it's a great idea

Q: Does it sound like MS to have an independent team that would be above both the WP and Win teams? Do you agree with Tom Warren - is DigiTimes is drunk?

NewsCorp COO Chase Carey at an NAB keynote

Hey TNT Crew!

I was listening to the feedback on show #727 where Ewen made the comment 'You don't really own anything anymore, you just license it.'. I have a bit of an issue with that mentality because it makes it seem like games are an ephemeral medium that isn't worth going back to.

It's a little disheartening to know that in a few short years I might not be able to enjoy games like Diablo III because the servers will no longer be working.

Games can and often leave lasting impressions on people, much like great movies do, but while movies are perpetually available on more formats than you can shake a stick at, games are limited to the one or handful of platforms they were released on.

I think we're doing ourselves a great disservice in just accepting this as "The way it is." or "The way it's going." Games are part of our history just like books, music, and movies, and ought to be preserved in the same ways. This is why I get antsy when I hear about these sorts of DRM schemes. By not allowing us to actually Own our games, it relegates them to forever being a second class medium.

So, we haven't had cable TV in something like 5 years now. Today I got to see how that goes with a child who has NEVER had cable and only knows Netflix..

I was at the doctor with "J" and she was watching Spongebob on Nickelodeon. All the sudden she says "I don't want to watch this, I want to watch Dora, or no Diego" She grabs the TV remote and starts trying to figure out how to stop the show and pick something else.

When I tell her this is the kind of TV that you can't change to a different Nick show, she looks at me like 0_o and says "Whaaaaat?" I have raised a digital, on demand child. To her, live cable TV is what black and white TV was to our generation :)
