tmSamsung expects operating profit for Q1 of 2013 to be 8.7 trillion won which is about $7.7billion. That's a 53% increase over 2012. So why is that troubling some analysts? Because it would break a string of five straight quarters of record profits for the Korean giant. The good news is, the Galaxy S4 pre-orders start April 16, so there's hope for a good Q2.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1035_3-57578066-94/samsung-expects-first-quarter-profits-of-$7.7b-up-53-percent/

slCnet is citing 2 people familiar with the situation that Apple is close to striking a streaming deal with two of the major music labels that's better than what the labels currently get from Pandora, because they'd offer new revenue streams in addtion to a per-stream rate, like Pandora's model. That includes a quick way for consumers to buy a song they hear, potentially boosting download sales from iTunes, as well as a revenue share of new audio ads Apple is planning to add to the free service, according to sources.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57578062-37/for-labels-apples-iradio-deal-could-be-sweeter-than-pandora/

tmAccording to March 29 filing in San Francisco Federal Court, Google has challenged a demand by the U.S. government for private user information related to a national security probe. The Electronic Frontier Foundation believes this to be the first time a major communications company has pushed back against a National Security Letter. The challenge comes three weeks after a federal judge in San Francisco ruled that NSLs, which are issued without a warrant, are unconstitutional.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-04-04/google-fights-u-s-national-security-probe-data-demand.html

slT-Mobile subscribers can now preorder the iPhone 5. The 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models are all available in either black or white. The new contract-free, subsidy-free plan, gives buyers two choices: They can pay the full nonsubsidized cost of the iPhone up front, or they can contribute a small down payment and then pay off the full cost in the form of 24 monthly payments of $20 each. 16GB iPhone 5 sells for $99 up front or $579 in total, the 32GB edition costs $199 initially or $679 in total, and the 64GB flavor goes for $299 up front or $779 in total.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57578099-37/t-mobile-kicks-off-preorders-for-iphone-5/

iaAlright you BlackBerry die hards - good news. If you're in the UK, you can preorder the BlackBerry Q10 at a number of carriers like EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone. An unlocked Q10 will run at about 580 british pounds, which is pricier than the touchscreen-only Z10 -- that costs about 515 british pounds. Delivery is expected by the end of April. http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/05/the-blackberry-q10-is-now-available-for-pre-order-in-the-uk/

slGoogle, along with BlackBerry, EarthLink and Red Hat today appealed to the Federal Trade Commission and Department of Justice to take stronger action against companies like Lodsys, Intellectual Ventures, and other “patent assertion entities” - a really nice name for patent trolls that abuse patents for financial gain, and have cost U.S. companies alone nearly $30 billion in 2011, “and $80 billion when accounting for all costs – direct and indirect.”http://techcrunch.com/2013/04/05/google-blackberry-earthlink-and-red-hat-take-a-stand-against-patent-trolls-ask-ftc-doj-to-do-the-same/

iaGoogle regularly receives DMCA takedown requests from a number of parties including tv and movie studios. In a move to be transparent, Google publishes these requests. But today, there's news that Google has received DMCA take down notices from two studios to remove some previously published DMCA take down notices. Both Universal Studios and Fox are asking Google to delete the published take down notices citing the DMCA. TorrentFreak.com thinks this is just the result of automated tools. I can't wait for these new takedown notices to get published so this can go on forever. http://torrentfreak.com/fox-wants-google-to-take-down-its-own-takedown-request-130404/

slWhy Facebook Home bothers me: It destroys any notion of privacyhttp://gigaom.com/2013/04/04/why-facebook-home-bothers-me-it-destroys-any-notion-of-privacy/

.

- Om Malik says Home is a huge privacy issue. Home is start menu for your app launches. FB can find out what's popular and build clone.
- can track your every move, figure out where you live if trend shows you always somewhere during sleep hours, build more specific profile of you
- whether or not you "check in", FB can start noting your favorite restaurants, running trail (accelerometer inside shows you running)
- Android allows Facebook to do whatever it wants on the platform, and that means accessing the hardware as well.
- this is for marketing and advertising. Zuck said yesterday there will be ads on Home
FB has a rep for privacy issues. Would we be having this convo if it were Google, Apple?

iaFor labels, Apple's iRadio deal could be sweeter than Pandorahttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57578062-37/for-labels-apples-iradio-deal-could-be-sweeter-than-pandora/

.

The Deals
- Cnet report says that Apple is "close to striking a streaming deal with two of the major music labels" - Warner Music and Universal Music Group
- Apple would be offering the music industry a better deal than Pandora, which would also include a revenue share of new audio ads Apple is planning to add to the free service, according to sources.
- Apple still needs to get a number of parties on board including Sony Music Group
- Apple told labels that it wants to get everything lined up for a summer launch
- Label executives are confident that any Apple iRadio service will gain traction

The Service
- Apple's music service would offer a quick way for consumers to buy a song they hear, potentially boosting download sales from iTunes, (rev for the labels)
- CNet's sources say Apple's service "most closely resembles" Pandora
- No on-demand listening, but you'd be able to jump back to the beginning of a song
- The product would be tied to iTunes and be available on mobile devices
Q: From the scant details, does anything sound compelling about Apple's streaming service? Could it gain traction with customers just b/c Apple's behind it?

- "Sometimes the electricity goes out, I will not buy a vacuum cleaner"
Q: So… tip-off that Xbox will be always on, or guy discovering Twitter is, in fact, public?

iaMicrosoft threatened as smartphones and tablets rise, Gartner warnshttp://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2013/apr/04/microsoft-smartphones-tablets

.

Gartner: Microsoft is dead, Windows has expired, Office has ceased to be
http://blogs.computerworld.com/consumerization-it/22011/gartner-microsoft-dead-windows-has-expired-office-has-ceased-be-itbwcw

.

- Research firm Gartner says MS is facing some trouble because the PC market is expected to decline
- Gartner projected how many millions of devices will be sold out to the year 2017
- Android devices would greatly outsell Windows (on PC, tablet, and phone)
- Windows would be close to iOS/MacOS in the amount of devices sold
- "Winning in the tablet and phone space is critical for them to remain relevant in this shift," says Gartner's Carolina Milanesi
- per-PC Windows licences generate about 50% of its profits, and Office licences almost all the rest.

Q: Even if MS doesn't own the OS market, does that really spell doom for MS?

You guys were talking about Microsoft getting out of the media OS space to position the Xbox as the central consumption device recently.

In Canada, Bell has been transitioning from its satellite service to Bell Fibe, which is a Motorola box that Runs Microsoft's mediaroom, based on WinCE.

It's IPTV with many useful features, but I could very much imagine future editions integrated with the Xbox.

Thought you might want to know.

Hi All,

2 comments:

1. On the [brick & mortar] vs. Online shopping front don't forget the social aspect of shopping. Going out, yes actually leaving your computer to shop with others. You know the people watching (girl watching), eating junk food at the mall, etc...

2. On the product placement in movies... one powerful aspect which was not mentioned: the subliminal effect!

Thanks for the show and all you guys & gal do.
