slWindows 8's official hardware requirements have relaxed a bit... a recent newsletter says Microfost will permit the creation of Windows 8 devices with a resolution of 1,024 x 768 -- pointing to a very different size and shape. Microsoft says the policy switch isn't meant to "encourage partners to regularly use a lower screen resolution"... it's also warning the new dimensions will be incompatible with Windows 8's split-screen feature, known as "snap". So... what's the deal here? Expand choice, and incompatibility? http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/29/microsoft-relaxes-windows-8-resolution-rule/

iaAt the Game Developers Conference, Razer announced that its gaming tablets, the Edge and Edge Pro, will ship pre-loaded with Valve's Steam software. If you're wondering how you'll play Steam games on a tablet, a Razer rep told DigitalTrends.com that Windows 8 will automatically port some basic mouse controls to touch controls - meaning you can use your fingers. If that doesn't work for you, you can plug in an input device using the Edge's USB port. http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/razer-edge-adds-steam-to-gaming-tablet/

slMicrosoft has launched a Web tool that lets anyone search its entire portfolio of 40,785 patents. Micrsoft general counsel, Brad Smith, says this is meant to create greater transparency, giving those who might otherwise illegally use Microsoft's patents without permission a way to find what intellectual property Microsoft owns. Smith says Microsoft hopes other patent holders will offer similar windows into their intellectual property holdings to help curb the abuse of the system by patent trolls.http://news.cnet.com/8301-10805_3-57576852-75/microsoft-debuts-web-site-to-search-all-its-patents/

tmPromising not to sue over patents is almost as fashionable as suing over patents. Google announced yesterday it will not sue anyone over 10 patents related to MapReduce, a model for processing large data sets. Unless you sue Google first of course. Many open source projects, most prominently Hadoop rely on MapReduce. Google said it plans to expand the pledge to other technologies over time.http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57576795-93/google-vows-not-to-sue-over-certain-patents-for-open-source/

slWe've got a virtual currency milestone, people...Today, all the Bitcoin in circulation — some 10.9 million of them — have collectively crossed the billion-dollar mark. Unsurprisingly the value of Bitcoin (and its exchange rate) has fluctuated wildly today. At one point, it hit a dollar value around $78, then pushed into the mid-nineties. Kind of a big deal for a largely unregulated, decentralized, controversial virtual currency. http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/28/bitcoin-how-an-unregulated-decentralized-virtual-currency-just-became-a-billion-dollar-market/

iaNormally, humans are to blame for trouble - it's now time to wage war against the inanimate! What am I talking about? Ship anchors! According to a Telecom Egypt exec, internet slowdowns were possibly caused by a ship's anchor damaging cables and not caused by three men who were arrested earlier this week for attempting to cut an undersea cable. Cable provider Seacom reported a cut in its Mediterranean cable and it also believes it is the work of a ship anchor. http://slashdot.org/topic/datacenter/ships-anchor-suspected-in-mideast-internet-problems/

History
- Amazon bought Shelfari (a small booksharing startup) in Aug 2008
- Shelfari describes itself as "a community-powered encyclopedia for book lovers."
- Back in Jan 2012 Goodreads moved away from its main source of book data, the Amazon Product Advertising API, citing its "many restrictions." It completed the transition to Ingram Book Company's data
- Dec 2012: Amazon starts pulling some reviews w/o a public explanation. Writers say thousands of reviews were deleted in recent months. NYT says that some reviews were pulled due to direct relationships with authors

slGartner predicts 3D printers will cost less than a PC by 2016http://www.networkworld.com/news/2013/032713-gartner-3d-printers-268162.html?hpg1=bn

.

- Gartner report predicting that enterprise-class 3D printers will be available for less than $2,000 by 2016.
- 3D printers are already in use among many businesses, from manufacturing to pharmaceuticals to consumers goods, and have generated a diverse set of use cases. As a result, the capabilities of the technology have evolved to meet customer needs, and will continue to develop to target those in additional markets, Gartner says.
- fundamental shift in biz: Businesses can create physical prototypes and architectural models much easier, and in some cases could enable customers to print the final purchased product from their own 3D printers, Gartner says.
- in iffy cases like Defense Distributed getting a license for printing a firearm, this is technology that will outpace law

Hi,

Regarding the FAA being less restrictive about electronic devices, the show mentioned the possibility of putting too much responsibility on flight attendants to learn each device's airplane mode settings.

I wonder if this could be solved by a portable sensor that the flight attendants would use as they walked down the aisle. I'm imagining something like an ohmmeter with a corded sensor that would detect the signals that the airline is concerned about.

This way, the flight attendants wouldn't have to learn anything new and they could just tell the passenger that however they do it on their device, they're not using the correct airplane mode settings.

If the passenger didn't know how to activate airplane mode, the fallback position would be to turn the device off. Thanks again for a great show.
