slHow the Maker of TurboTax Fought Free, Simple Tax Filinghttp://www.propublica.org/article/how-the-maker-of-turbotax-fought-free-simple-tax-filing

.

- around 25M Americans used TurboTax in 2012. Govt Accountability Office analysis said the software accounted for more than half of individual returns filed electronically. TurboTax made up 35% of Intuit's $4.2 billion in total revenues last year. Versions of TurboTax for individuals and small businesses range in price from free to $150.
- The government-prepared return (sweden, spain, denmark all use it) would estimate your taxes using info your employer and bank already sent it. Advocates say tens of millions of taxpayers could save $2B and 225M hours in prep costs and time
- not a new concept, endorsed by Prez Reagan, Prez Obama during campaign.
- Taxpayers would have three options when they receive a pre-filled return: accept it as is; make adjustments, say to filing status or income; or reject it and file a return by other means.
- Intuit spent $11.5M on federal lobbying in past 5 years, part of that "opposes IRS government tax preparation." in 2011 lobbied on two bills, both of which died, that would have allowed many taxpayers to file pre-filled returns for free.
- Intuit also lobbied on bills in 2007 & 2011 to bar Treasury Department, which includes the IRS, from initiating return-free filing.
- Intuit says that if IRS acts as a tax preparer, taxpayers might pay more money. It is also a
- Intuit also a member of the Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA), which sponsors a "STOP IRS TAKEOVER" campaign calling return-free filing a "massive expansion of the U.S. government through a big government program."
- Grover Norquist, founder/prez of "americans for tax reform" says: "The clear goal of this measure is to raise taxes in a way that leaves politicians with clean hands,"

slCompanies Hire 'Ethical Hackers' To Dupe Employees; Crutches as Propshttp://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887324373204578373011392662962.html

.

- "Check out these kitties! :-)" is an email with photo of a Turkish Angora cat with a purple mohawk named Dr. Zaius, sent to nearly 2M ppl, includes an attachment or link promising more cat photos. but it's a setup: tech depts are sending it out to teach employees a lesson
- Dr. Zaius email is a simulated cyberattack created by PhishMe Inc. out of the Chantilly, Va..to find out who's succeptible to social engineering. most big network breaches start this way. another co, Digital Defense Inc. of San Antonio says it isn't to get anybody fired or in trouble, but rather to help everyone learn the techniques malicious hackers also use.
- another phishme scam: First, an employee gets an email purportedly from a senior manager, with an attachment on potential bonuses for a number of people. Then comes another email attempting to "recall" the first.
- in 2005, New York state twice sent 10,000 employees and contractors a "phishing," or deceptive, email urging them to divulge passwords on a linked website. The first time, 15% fell for it, but the second time, only 8% did
- ANOTHER TACTIC: digital-security company, Trustwave Holdings Inc., drop thumb drives & CDs in the bathrooms, driveways and nearby coffee shops of companies that hire him. attaches the company's logo, a competitor's logo or a label that reads "confidential." almost always an employee will find one of the decoys and stick it in a computer. contain software that takes over computers, hijacking built-in cameras to snap photos of the employees.

The thing about T-Mobile pricing is that that if you hold on to your phone for more than two years, your monthly phone bill goes down. This doesn't happen on any other carrier.

Anecdotally, most of my non-technically inclined friends and relatives hold on to their phones longer than two years. Some substantially longer.
