tmWhile the US Government is incapable of sensible economic policy, it can change laws to help Netflix and Facebook. The fruits of that novel effort arrive today as US users get what the rest of Earth has had since 2011, the ability to share what you're watching on Netflix with friends on Facebook. International users get an update that allows them more control over what gets posted. Netflix users who opt in will see a "Friends Favorites" and "Watched by Friends" row on their Netflix home page.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-13/netflix-adds-social-options-facebook-ties-for-u-s-users.html

slSamsung’s unveiling the Galaxy S4 at Radio City Music Hall tomorrow in New York City in an effort to steal yet more buzz away from its biggest smartphone competitor in the US, Apple. Although Samsung became the smartphone leader worldwide more than a year ago, Apple still remains No. 1 in the U.S. Reports of the S4 include a 5-inch screen, & Qualcomm quad-core chip, though in other markets, it will rely on Samsung’s “octacore” eight-core chip.http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-12/samsung-targets-galaxy-4-at-apple-s-core-iphone-market.html

iaChanges ahead at Google. Andy Rubin will no longer head up Android at Google. Chrome boss Sundar Pichai will be in charge of Android as well as Chrome. The move was announced on the official Google Blog in a post penned by Larry Page. Rubin is not leaving Google - Page says Rubin is starting a new chapter at the company. Google Books maybe? Chapters?http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/13/sundar-pichai-takes-over-for-andy-rubin-as-head-of-android-at-google/

tmGood news everyone! We all know the French work too hard. Thankfully a Paris Court this week banned seven French Apple Stores from forcing employees to work night shifts, and pay €10,000 in damages to the unions who filed the suit. French law restricts requiring work between 9PM and 6 AM when they better server their nation by smoking Galoises and muttering complaints about the English into their Steak Frites.http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/13/4098052/french-judge-bans-apple-store-employees-from-working-nights

slGoogle has agreed to pay a record $7 million fine to 38 US states after its Street View cars collected passwords and other personal data from home Wi-Fi networks. Google has maintained that the data, collected between 2008 and 2010 across the US, was taken due a piece of experimental computer code included in the Street View mapping cars’ software. The $7million fine will be split among the states involved in the investigation. No biggie, Google made $50.2 billion in revenue and $10.7bn in net income in 2012.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/9926852/Google-hit-by-7m-Street-View-fine-for-harvesting-data.html

tmThe US Federal Trade Commission issued new guidelines on Tuesday updating the "Dotcom Disclosures" rules issued in 2000. The rules for marketers on TV and radio have always applied, but examples now illustrate just how they apply on small screens and in social networks. As an example of the examples, the FTC recommends using the word 'ad' before posts in 'space-constrained postings' THEY MEAN TWITTER. http://paidcontent.org/2013/03/12/feds-issue-rules-for-social-media-and-small-screen-ads-twitter-and-bloggers-take-note/

slNext week, AT&T Labs researchers will present data from a recent test that set a record for long-distance network speeds at the Optical Fiber Communication and National Fiber Optics Engineers Conference. The technology allows existing 100 gigabit-per-second fiber connections to be used to transmit over four times as much data. When used with a new low-loss optical fiber, they can sustain that data rate at distances over 7,500 miles, which could dramatically speed up the backbone of the Internet, notably via submarine cables that connect the continents.http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/03/att-labs-pumps-495gbps-of-data-over-7400-miles/

tmEA is now in hot water for allegedly lying about SimCity's servers. Maxis Studio head Lucy Bradshaw told reporters that SimCity offloads calculations to the serves and a 'significant amount of engineering work' would be needed to rewrite the game for a single player. However, a source who worked on SimCity told rockpapershotgun the servers are not handling any of the computation to simulate the city. Many players, including myself have noticed that you can continue to play the game when the servers go offline.http://hothardware.com/News/Maxis-Caught-Lying-About-SimCity-Online-Play-Requirement-/#c7wHgro8sJjbrw90.16

iaPew Internet research says that one in four American teenagers are "cell-mostly" Internet users. That means that they choose their phones to go online over other devices like laptops or desktops. 78% of the surveyed teens had cell phones and 47% of that 78% owned a smartphone. The study also said that 95% of teens use the Internet. Wait. What? 5% don't? Luddites. http://www.slashgear.com/survey-shows-a-quarter-of-american-teens-are-cell-mostly-internet-users-13273690/

Netflix Adds Social Options, Facebook Ties for U.S. Users
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-13/netflix-adds-social-options-facebook-ties-for-u-s-users.html

.

- Starting today, Netflix users in the US can share what they're watching with friends
- A Netflix spokesperson says International users will also receive the update.
- By default sharing happens on Netflix only. You can share to FB by going into settings
- You'l get two new rows in Netflix: "Watched by your friends" and "Friends's Favorites" row.
- You can chose to unshare titles, so if you were watching "Titanic II," you can click the "don't share" button to remove it
- All 27 million U.S. streaming Netflix members will have access to social features by the end of this week,

Q: Will this social feature help Netflix gain mindshare with its original programming? Will people use it? [Does FB integration give Netflix a bigger lead on Amazon & competitors?]
- About 15 percent to 20 percent of Netflix’s 6 million customers in Canada, Latin America and the U.K. adopted the older version of Facebook integration that didn’t let users choose what they post about their viewing habits.

- Adding social features was made possible in the U.S. by changes to the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988

- It's powered by the Linux 3.8 kernel
- Most interesting: it offers UEFI boot support and can dual boot with a Windows 8 system
- Intel warns "This is a developer preview release of pre-alpha quality. It is buggy and not highly optimized. You have been warned."

Hey Crew,
On Tuesday's show you discussed the government implications if Lenovo bought Blackberry. Suppose Lenovo was thinking of the Chinese government rather than the US government.

Wasn't there a story recently that the Chinese government is becoming more uneasy that most of its phones are running Android, an operating system created by an American company? What if Lenovo bought Blackberry to produce phones by and for the Chinese. In an NPR story, the idea of the China Dream was discussed.

To a physicist, a calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by one degree Celsius.

To a dietitian, a Calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius.

Your mouse click number was in calories, not Calories ... and your Snickers bar is measured in Calories.

I'm afraid it's going to take rather more clicking than you suggested to lose weight by playing videogames.
