iaYou're probably a digital hoarder like me and have piles and piles of dusty old music and ebooks. Well, Apple just got a patent that would allow users to sell or even give away digital files including movies and software. The system would allow access to those files one user at a time. Amazon received a similar patent back in January. While this idea does sound a bit strange for digital goods, libraries welcome the idea. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/08/technology/revolution-in-the-resale-of-digital-books-and-music.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

tmThe US Federal Trade Commission has filed complaints against 29 people accused of sending more than 180 million text messages falsely promising free gift cards. 8 separate complaints describe how the accused promised free gifts or prizes, like $1,000 gift cards. Anyone who clicked had to traverse several websites and sign up for subscription services or credit cards. Their information was then sold to third parties without proper disclosure. This process is also known as "a 1999 dot-com business model"

tmGoogle has reached an agreement with patent license pool MPEG LA to provide the VP8 video codec for use without payment of a royalty, forever. VP8 is part of Google's WEbM video standard. Google obtained the codec in 2010 with the intention of making it an open source replacement for H.264. MPEG LA, the pool of companies who own patents covering the operation of H.264 immediately said its members had patents violated by VP8. The agreement is commercial in nature but no terms have been revealed.http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2013/03/google-mpeg-la-agree-to-royalty-free-terms-for-vp8-video-codec/

iaAccording to FossPatents, the Munich I Regional Court says that it is likely to hold Google and Motorola liable for infringing on a Microsoft patent. Microsoft could be able to obtain an injunction that would grind Google Maps to a standstill. Google Maps on web browsers, apps and the service as a whole would not be available from computers using a German IP address. An official decision by the court is expected in two months. http://www.fosspatents.com/2013/03/google-about-to-lose-patent-spat-with.html

tmThursday, the Georgia House defeated a bill that would have limited local governments’ ability to create their own broadband Internet networks. Telecom companies have lobbied hard to forbid governments from creating competing networks. At a time when the United States continues to fall in Internet access and speed. 19 states have some sort of limit on publicly funded Internet infrastructure. Telecoms object to public subsidies for network rollouts unless the subsidies are paid to the telecoms. The telecoms prefer the Internet roll out as it began by having private companies …. wait… DARPA created the internet. Hey Guys,

A buddy of mine works at Intel and has been talking the last several months about how Intel sees no real value in ARM for various reasons. In essence, the Clover Trail and successor platforms are - according to my buddy - smaller, faster and more power-efficient. Intel has been working with vendors to help them transition.

Based on my friend's enthusiasm and knowledge, I'd guess that negotiations with Apple are about pushing "the next big thing" in mobile processing versus Intel going ARM.

But maybe my friend just drank the koolaid. :)

KUTGW,

Vijay (one-half of The Boys From Boston)

Hey TNT crew,

I love the show and a great fan. I was listening to yesterday's episode on Apple teaming up with Intel. I wanted to point out an error that you guys suggested Intel should license ARM Architecture. Infact Intel is a licencee of ARM. The fact that intel belives that SOC is not the only thing, but the "other good stuff" around it is what makes a great system and Medfield already meets the stringent power requirements is another deterrent for Intel to use ARM technology to build future SOCs (system on a chip).

Intel Licensed the ARM architecture AMRv6 in 2001

http://www.eetimes.com/electronics-news/4102555/Intel-and-TI-license-ARM-s-upcoming-v6-core-for-future-processor-products
Paul Otellini said that even though Intel has licensed ARM architecture, it doesn’t have any plans to build a ARM processor because of the ATOM and Medfeld processors.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/computers/intel-we-have-arm-license-no-plans-to-use-it/5845

Intel is listed as a Semiconductor Vendor with ARM processor RTL license from ARM on ARM’s Site.

Thilak
