slAs the board of directors at Intel looks for a candidate to replace outgoing CEO Paul Otellini, Intel's next CEO should be prepared to shift the company into a growing contract-manufacturing business, which could potentially lead to a deal with Apple and give Intel new life in the mobile arena. For decades Intel based its business on using strong manufacturing to offer its own PC chips superior to rival products. As PC sales decline, Intel must think of new ways to fill idle production lines while earning new revenue.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/07/us-intel-foundry-idUSBRE92609R20130307

iaApple is asking a federal court to dismiss a lawsuit that says Apple has a monopoly on iPhone apps. The lawsuit came about in 2011 and says Apple has a monopoly because if a user wanted to buy an app, it has no place other than Apple's App Store to buy it. Apple's attorneys argue that there's nothing illegal about "creating a system that is closed in a sense." http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-03-06/apple-asks-judge-to-dismiss-suit-alleging-iphone-monopoly.html

tmMichael Dell's facing resistance to his plan to buy-back the company from shareholders and take it private. Carl Icahn has joined Southeastern Asset Managaement in a proposal that would keep Dell public and pay dividend of $9 a share to investors as part of a leveraged Recapitalization. Both have threatened a proxy fight if their proposal is not accepted. Meanwhile Dell has had to open some confidential data to HP and Lenovo, who have expressed interest in buying Dell but aren't expected to make a bid.

slPath 3.0 for iOS is live, and adds a couple of big updates to the private social network. Now you can privately message your fellow users, with the ability to send voice, text, stickers, locations, and more. Path has also rolled out The Shop, full of premium photo filters and stickers designed by artists. Most items in the shop will cost you a dollar or two, and it's clear Path is starting to take monetization of your most intimate moments with your friends and family a little more seriously.http://thenextweb.com/apps/2013/03/07/path-3-0-adds-private-messaging-and-the-shop-with-handcrafted-stickers-and-premium-photo-filters/

iaSo if you're not aware, Apple and Samsung are suing each other all over the world, so there are bound to be rulings every day. Today, Samsung lost a patent suit against Apple in the UK High Court. Samsung sued Apple saying Apple infringed on three of its networking patents. tmThe U.S. Department of Justice has approved the merger of T-Mobile USA and MetroPCS but the deal still needs sign-off by the FCC, the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), and MetroPCS shareholders. slTwo new mobile privacy bills recently introduced in Texas are among the “most sweeping” some privacy experts have ever seen. If passed, the new bills would establish a well-defined, probable cause-driven warrant requirement for all location information, from GPS, pen register, tap and trace, and tower location data. Data would be shared with law enforcement "if there is probable cause to believe the records disclosing location information will provide evidence in a criminal investigation."http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/texas-proposes-one-of-nations-most-sweeping-mobile-privacy-laws/

iaKim Dotcom wants to be able to sue New Zealand's Government Security Bureau over the raid the agency conducted and he's going to get his wish. The Bureau filed an application with the New Zealand Appeals Court asking to be excluded from such a lawsuit. The agency argued that it was named twice as a defendent because Dotcom is suing both the New Zealand police and the Government Security Bureau. Why Icahn's Dell plan could be a FUD nightmarehttp://www.zdnet.com/why-icahns-dell-plan-could-be-a-fud-nightmare-7000012268/

.

Inside Microsoft’s decision to loan the Dell buyout consortium $2 billionhttp://thenextweb.com/microsoft/2013/03/07/microsofts-role-in-the-dell-buyout-explained/

.

-Bloomberg reports HP, Lenovo, Blackstone Group, expressing interest in Dell. Probably won't bid
- CNBC Carl Icahn now has 6% stake now, wants refinance and dividend payout $9/share or he will start a proxy fight
- Icahn joins Southeastern Asset Mgmt. (8.5%) in that plan. T. Rowe Price (4.4%) also in opposition,
- Dell and Silver Lake have until 3/22 to evaluate alternatives
Two effects
1. Dell takes on debt in either the LBO or the Recap, and loses cash in the recap
2. HP and Lenovo get to look at some confidential info
- Don't forget Microsoft loaning Dell $2 billion for the buyout
Q: So should we write off Dell?

iaNext Intel CEO to guide new business, maybe Apple dealhttp://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/07/us-intel-foundry-idUSBRE92609R20130307

.

- Reuters has a look at Intel as its shifting leaders
- Intel announced it will act as a foundry - meaning it will manufacture chips designed by another chipmaker. It has a deal with Altera.
- A source tells Reuters that Intel and Apple have talked about Intel making chips for Apple's iPad and iPhone.
- Those devices are based on ARM architecture and Intel's being trying to crack the mobile market for years
- The reason Intel would open up manufacturing chips for others is to help fund research to create its own chips
- The VP and GM of Intel custom foundry, Sunit Rikhi says his group is ready to take on a potential large, unidentified mobile customer
- Meanwhile Intel is looking for a new CEO as Paul Otellini is leaving in May 2013

Q: Should the next Intel CEO open up its foundry business to all comers and/or should it look at licensing ARM to make its own ARM chips?

Eastern influence: Path’s new messaging and monetization model are straight out of Asiahttp://thenextweb.com/asia/2013/03/07/path-3-0-inspired-by-asia/

.

- 3.0 adds messaging to friends or.. non-friends (wtf)
- stickers within messaging help you convey your emotions (stickers only for messaging, not main path feed)
- push to talk for voice messages
- store to buy sticker packs, or premium photo filters
- design is great, but feels twee
- store is good for rev stream, but certain markets being targeted. last year, dave morin said asia was fastest growing market. messaging on path looks very similar to path rivals.
- Japanese app Line — which has 100 million plus users — is spreading across the region, rivaled by Kakao Talk (85 million) and China’s WeChat, which has a whopping 300 million downloads.
- Line was bringing in $3.75M/month through sticker sales back in July, & has doubled its user base.

.

SimCity launched in North America Monday night with download and server problems
- Launch in Australia yesterday has continuing server problems. European launch comes Friday
- What has historically been a solo game, requires an always-on connection.
"We are aggressively undergoing maintenance on the servers and adding capacity to meet demand. Performance will fluctuate during this process. Our fans are important to us, and we thank you for your continued patience."
- Some say you shouldn't support EA because of its abusive DRM
- Others say that big launches like this always have problems (i.e. Diablo III)

- Zuck got on stage and said ""Today we're going to talk about a design ... that builds the basis for the best personalized newspaper."
- Photos have gone from 20% of News Feed content to 50%. Page posts from brands and public figure have gone from 15% to 25%.
- new feed is mobile inspired. At the top is a giant video. The left-hand column in the desktop is gone. There are three areas that it focuses on: Rich feeds, choice of feeds, and mobile consistency. You get the same experience on desktop and mobile.
- Items about people now pick up elements from the Timeline profile-page design. 3rd party apps like Pinterest look better
- videos appear at full width, play in-line in feed
- introducing new feeds with specific types of content. Feeds for events, photos, and music
- There's an "All Friends" feed—every single post, in chronological order. It's more like Twitter.
- There's also a "Following" feed, which shows posts from all the brands, publications, and businesses you follow. It's also in chronological order, addressing criticisms that Facebook's News Feed algorithm was hiding some posts from followers.

iaASUS Transformer AiO launching Q2 for $1,299 and up, marries Windows 8 desktop with monster Android tablethttp://www.engadget.com/2013/03/07/asus-transformer-aio/VIDEO

.

- Desktop PCs aren't dead
- Asus officially introduced the Transformer AiO. It's an All in One (hence the AiO name) that has two parts.
- It has an 18.4-inch, 1920 x 1080 multitouch display
- Inside, you have options of an Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 along with an Nvidia GeForce GT730M GPU, 4 or 8GB of RAM and a 2TB HDD
- As a transformer, the display is removable and is a tablet. Inside of that display is a quad-core Tegra 3, 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
- Docked, the device runs Windows 8. When it's pulled away from the dock, the screen acts as a terminal for the dock (you still have Windows 8 via remote desktop that works over wifi).
- There's a button that switches the OS from Windows 8 to Android Jelly Bean. Up to 5 hours detached.

Q: With a dual OS Who is this device for? Are all all-in-ones destined to become giant tablets?

Hi guys

Big fan of the network and love the show

Over the other side of the pond in lil ol' Ireland, some of our Senators on Communications have been trashing our ideas on internet and social media.

Senator Eamon Coghlan. The former athlete (3time Olympian & former World Champion in the 5k) had a few ideas to try and reduce some of the unwanted traffic on social media.

"If somebody is to sign up to seek an IP address should they give their passport number, should they give their credit card number?" he said according to a report on Newstalk.

"If somebody wants to post something on the internet, should they actually pay to post something on the internet - whereby trying to avoid people not posting something because it's now going to cost them something," he added

Keep up the good work folks

Hi TNT Crew,

I only want Instagram on my Windows Phone because a local comicbook artist seems to interact more with his fans there than he does on Twitter. If there was a way just to create an account online and not need an app I would be fine with that.

What really bugs me though is how it was deemed "sad" that Nokia would create the #2InstaWithLove app to try to win over Instagram. This is a common problem I've noticed with Windows Phone. Any time it's talked about in the tech press it's always surrounded with negativity. It's subtle but trust me it's there.

I was an Android user for 2 and 1/2 years and jumped ship because I was sick of the random restarts, sporadic battery life, and how the Gmail app wouldn't send email all the time. Try getting Google support for the Gmail app on Android. I've tried, I got no where.

Love the show,
Steve in Chicago
