slGoogle strikes deal with Warner Music for streaming serviceshttp://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-57572713-93/google-strikes-deal-with-warner-music-for-streaming-services/

.

Why Google Thinks Two Music Subscription Services Are Better Than Nonehttp://allthingsd.com/20130305/why-google-thinks-two-music-subscription-services-are-better-than-none/

.

- yesterday billboard reported Google struck a deal with Warner Music Group yesterday, according to a source. gives Google rights for two services it's working on -- one that's part of Google's Android music platform, Google Play, and the other that's part of YouTube.
- YouTube, which has 800 million unique monthly users, is already the largest music service in existence, and for now it only makes money via ads.
- ATD is separating the 2 services. Android music service makes sense - music is a big part of mobile, why let spotify/pandora have all the users
- YouTube wants to collect rights to sell music, in both audio and video form, via subscriptions. But music owners don't know what it wants to do with those rights
- Warner is in, still need Universal & Sony. goog needs buy-in from them & those who own the publishing "rights" – the compositions for each song. that isn't always the big 3. gets complicated internationally too.
- YouTube content head Robert Kyncl is representing the search giant in all of its talks
old way: music owners got get paid a small fee every time someone played their stuff on YouTube. All those small fees added up, which was nice for the labels but a real problem for YouTube, particularly when it didn’t have much of an ad business to absorb those costs.
- new way: music owners get a cut of the ads YouTube shows when it plays their songs. Much better for YouTube, but music owners grumble that they’re not making enough. And their deals are all up for renewal right now.
- why subs are the answer: YouTube can tell music owners that it’s providing a funnel to encourage people to actually pay for music. And the music owners can let YouTube hang on to what may be its most valuable asset, which it can keep offering for free.

iaApple's Cook, music mogul Iovine discuss new music servicehttp://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/06/us-apple-music-idUSBRE92506120130306

.

- Reuters reports that Apple has held talks with Beats on a potential partnership involving Beats' planned music streaming service.
- The talks were held between Tim Cook and Beats CEO Jimmy Iovine in late February. Iovine is also chairman of Interscoep-Geffen-A&M
- Beats announced a music subscription service called "Project Daisy" back in January and has secured $60M in funding from investors including the owner of Warner Music.
- Beats' Project Daisy would launch in late 2013

Q: partnering vs. rolling your own - what approach makes more sense?
- In a January interview with technology website AllThingsD, Iovine said he subsequently pitched a subscription service to Apple's late co-founder Steve Jobs in 2003. Jobs shot it down b/c he didn't want to pay the record companies enough, and thought the price would come down eventually.

Apple’s bounce back doesn’t shed ‘biggest loser’ labelhttp://on.mktw.net/Z7rKCJ

.

- UBS analyst Steve Milunovich sent a note out to clients titled "Identity Crisis: Can Apple Play Defense?"
- iPhone no longer dominant, Tablet market getting crowded
- Apple stock remains the biggest loser for the year-to-date among large-cap S&P 500 firms
- Analysts want cheaper products, copycat products, or new markets
- "The only way out might be innovation in new categories, which will require investor patience. Most companies would rush out a 5- to 6-inch phone; Apple probably won't."
- What should Apple do, and what do we think they will do?

tmABC Unified: Disney's new advertising platform could finally put TV anywhere you want ithttp://www.theverge.com/2013/3/5/4066982/abc-unified-disney-nielsen-tv-anywhere-advertising-platform

.

NIELSEN ONLINE CAMPAIGN RATINGS FOR ONLINE DEMO GUARANTEEShttp://www.nielsen.com/us/en/press-room/2013/nielsen-online-campaign-ratings-for-online-demo-guarantees.html

.

- "ABC Unified" campaign sells programs to advertisers across all platforms, from TVs to computers, tablets, and smartphones. One ad buy, one "audience guarantee" — a breakdown of a show's total audience combined across all of those platforms.
- ESPN and ABC Family doing more limited versions
- The seemingly arbitrary division of shows availability by platform no longer has an incentive.
- Disney and News Corp. reportedly discussing buying the other out. ABC favors an ad-supported approach. This could make Hulu go free or at least Hulu+ actually become premium.
Q: So…. what will mess this up?

Hey TNT crew. I was thinking about the YouTube music story that you guys reported on and realized it may actually make more sense than the Google play music service because it would be universal. Whether officially or unofficially, YouTube is available on every platform imaginable, whereas Google Play is limited to Android. This would allow YouTube music to become a dominant music service. Of course its all speculation for now. Love the show.
