tmThe New York Times' Brian Chen reports Sansung's Galaxy S 4 will feature Eye scrolling. A Samsung employee told Chen the phone will track eye movement and anticipate needs, like scrolling to the next paragraph when you reach the bottom of a Web page. In January, Samsung filed for a trademark in Europe on the name "Eye Scroll" and int he US for the name "Samsung Eye Scroll" Samsung has also filed for the trademark, "Eye Pause." Sounds like it will be a real Eye Phone.http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/04/samsungs-new-smartphone-will-track-eyes-to-scroll-pages/

slVint Cerf, a senior Google executive known as a "father of the Internet", says the Google shouldn't make people use their real names on the service, especially in light of recent government crackdowns on people via social media. Although he says he understands Google would prefer to force real-name authentication on Google+ and other services, the current name policy, which allows for some users to display pseudonyms, offers adequate "choice" in how users choose to represent themselves.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/05/us-google-names-idUSBRE9240HS20130305

iaTwitter continues to bathe itself in blood by announcing it is killing off some of the app versions of TweetDeck. So say goodbye to iOS, Android and Air versions of the app. Not only will the apps be removed from their stores in May, but they will also stop functioning after that. The web-based versions of TweetDeck as well as the non-Air-based Mac and PC clients will continue until Twitter decides to kill them too. http://www.theverge.com/2013/3/4/4064708/twitter-discontinuing-tweetdeck-apps

tmYesterday the White House officially responded to a petition requesting that unlocking phones be made explicitly legal. An exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act was not issued this year, making unlocking phones legally questionable. The White House said making unlocking legal is "common sense" and called for narrow legislation to make it clear unlocking a cell phone in the US is not a crime.http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/03/white-house-calls-for-cell-phone-unlocking-ban-to-be-overturned/

Hey TNT Crew:

Your talk about online / video advertising has been a topic that has been drivig me nuts for years. YouTube, in particular, should be able to pull in piles of money with all the Google data they have.

In my mind, the money isn't from the million impressions at 8 pm on Tuesday, but a million different impressions at once based on viewing history, location, and the piles of data that Google and Facebook have on you.

Imagine watching a YouTube video at lunch, or just before lunch, from a gourtmet food truck that will be outside of your office with a 10% off coupon.

Micro-targeting has proven incredibly successful in politics, with part of the philosophy being not wasting money on ads for people not interested in your product. Online video has the potential to provide that kind of focused audience and should sell for a premium.

I hope improvements in the advertising model will lead to improvements in content availability online.

Sorry for the long rant and having such great discussions!

Hey TNT crew,

In episode 702 you speculated that SSDs might finally overtake hard drives in the next few years. While it's true that perpendicular recording introduced ten years ago has just about reached its limits, new technologies are being developed by the disk drive companies which could yield 60TB 3.5 inch drives by 2016 (see https://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9227382/60TB_disk_drives_could_be_a_reality_in_2016 ). Assuming they can keep the cost of a hard drive the same, they will still outpace SSDs in cost per bit and have a long life in data centers that can actually use 60TB.

Hard drives are like the internal combustion engine -- a ridiculous technology that somehow sticks around because of all the R&D put into it.
