slApple's iWatch is real, and it's spectacular, and may be unveiled this year, according to Bloomberg, who also reports Apple has 100 employees working on the device. Although rumors of an Apple TV have long been swirling, the tv business is stuck with low margins, a long replacement cycle, and high costs, the watch business boasts higher margins and growth. Is Tim Cook following the money? Looks that way to me.http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57572324-37/apples-iwatch-may-be-unveiled-this-year-bloomberg-says/

tmIDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker expects 918.6 million smartphones to be sent out over the course of this year, equal to 50.1 percent of total mobile phones shipped by vendors. The report also predicts China will grow smartphone shipments 52% by 2018 but its marketshare will drop to 30.2% because of increases in markets like Brazil and India.http://thenextweb.com/insider/2013/03/04/idc-smartphone-shipments-to-overtake-feature-phones-worldwide-in-2013/?

slApple has been dealt a big setback in its patents battle with Samsung. On Friday, a federal judge slashed a $1.05 billion jury award by more than 40 percent and set a new trial to determine damages. Apple won the award last year against Samsung in the US in a very high-profile part of a number of trials around the world between the 2 companies. Apple convinced the jury that Samsung, which in 2012 overtook Apple as the global smartphone leader, had infringed on its iPhone and iPad patents.http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/02/us-apple-samsung-damages-idUSBRE92010820130302

Pulp, a comedy about a struggling comic book publisher recruited by the police to bust a crime syndicate, will be available to Xbox 360 Live subscribers. - "Be Ready 4 the Next Galaxy." March 14 in NYC

slDisruptions: As User Interaction on Facebook Drops, Sharing Comes at a Costhttp://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/03/03/disruptions-when-sharing-on-facebook-comes-at-a-cost/

.

- nick bilton at NYT talks about how his many subs aren't clicking on his links even though he has 400k subs, says FB is possibly supressing posts that he doesn't pay $7 to promote
- news feed is not a linear list the way twitter is. popular stuff supposed to rise to top of news feed, but now it's a lot of ads
- Facebook says “the median amount of feedback on posts (likes, comments, shares) from people who have more than 10,000 subscribers is up 34% from a year ago.” But Facebook has also said that there has been a 2% drop in interaction on the news feed, and is now replacing free content with paid content, which means a large number of free posts will disappear from people’s feeds and sponsored ads will dominate
- some other possibilites:
many of bilton's subs were spam, FB is weeding those out
those subs have more friends now, still liking content but more spread out
if you have more sponsored/promoted at top of page, more organic content is pushed under the fold.
Eben Moglen, a professor at Columbia who specializes in Internet law, said that although Facebook’s decisions to prioritize paid content could be seen as unethical, the company is not breaking any antitrust laws, yet. “While the effort that is being characterized is problematic, no one has defined Facebook as dominant in a market,” he said, adding that the competition among social networks leaves it open to operate of its own devices.

tmSeagate to Discontinue 7200rpm 2.5" Drives Later This Yearhttp://www.anandtech.com/show/6810/seagate-to-discontinue-7200rpm-25-drives-later-this-year

Seagate embraces SSHDs, phasing out 7,200rpm laptop HDDshttp://ces.cnet.com/8301-34439_1-57562510/seagate-embraces-sshds-phasing-out-7200rpm-laptop-hdds/

.

Seagate will stop production of 7200RPM 2.5" drives by end of this year
-Indicated this at CES, now followed through
- SSDs don't have the capacity or price yet, but they're close enough for most people, even a small (32-128GB) SSD will provide better overall performance when used as an OS and applications drive,
- Dual drives now very popular.
- will focus on solid-state hybrid drives (SSHDs)
-SSHDs will cost just about $10 to $20 more than hard drives of the same capacity.
- Kristian Vättö at Anandtech " In another five years, short of a new explosion in storage intensive files, we will likely reach the point where everything becomes pure SSD because the cost and performance will be better than any conventional or hybrid solutions."

slYouTube’s Show-Me-the-Money Problemhttp://allthingsd.com/20130304/youtubes-show-me-the-money-problem/

.

- YouTube’s biggest programming partners getting good views. But ad revenue YT generates for their stuff isn’t scaling
- depends on who you talk to: some publishers say YouTube takes its 45% cut of the ads it sells, they frequently end up keeping about $2.50 for every 1,000 views their clips generate — that is, if their video generates a million views, they get $2,500. Other publishers say their split can be as high as $10 per 1,000.
- source tells ATD that a frequent complaint: ‘We’re not making enough money,’”
- networks like Machinima & Maker Studios need to make sure they don't guarantee video makers a pay-per-view rate that's higher than what YouTube pays out.
rumored monetizing alternatives: selling some of its shows via subscriptions, itunes soundtrack sales, etc
- standalone sites can also outperform YouTube because Google doesn’t have its own YouTube sales force; Google’s sellers aren’t directed to sell individual shows and networks, but instead focus on broad “audience” buys.
- starting to monetize mobile

iaWith HitBliss, viewers earn money for 'free' movies and TV by watching personalized adshttp://www.theverge.com/2013/3/1/4043530/with-hitbliss-viewers-earn-credit-for-free-movies-and-tv-by-watching

.

- HitBliss launched a waitlisted beta on the first of March
- What is it? It's movie and tv store where you can rent streaming movies or buy TV episodes, just like iTunes or the Xbox Marketplace
- Payment is the hook. You can pay with a credit card, PayPal or whatever you earn at HitBliss
- You can earn credit toward video by watching advertising like movie trailers or TV commercials
- In "Earn Mode" there's a sliding scale as to how much you can earn. If you give more information, you earn faster. The more you personalize (by giving data like your gender, access to web history), the less ads you have to watch to earn.
- HitBliss has deals with WB, Paramount and Universal, Starz, VP of HitBliss says the co's close to getting 2/3 of the others and hopes to get all 6 by the end of the year.

Q: Would you use a service like this?
- Privacy: At every step, the user controls precisely which information she shares, down to the individual site.
- Works on Mac, PC, iOS and Android (not on STB).
- Video resolution 480p, HD video to come
- Example demo at the Verge with HitBliss, we were able to earn about $5 of credit, enough to rent a feature film, by watching a couple of TV-length commercials and a long movie trailer.

iaJolla Wants To Build A Foursquare Phone, A Facebook Phone — Whatever It Takes To Wake Smartphones From Their Android Slumber
http://techcrunch.com/2013/03/03/jolla-ceo-interview/http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=tRZxM9rNyZ4#t=16s

.

- Jolla (pronounced Yo-la) plans to release its first MeeGo based Sailfish OS phone around Christmas and Chinese New Yea starting in China, then in Finland
- The company was formed people from Nokia back in 2011 who left when it became clear Nokia was abandoning its efforts with MeeGo to focus fully on adopting Microsoft’s Windows Phone for smartphones

Other business models beyond hardware:
- Jolla says it could license its software or help other software companies build their own phones
- Dillon says Jolla COULD work with a like Foursquare to build a Foursquare phone that bakes its social, geolocated data throughout the experience (like see where your friends are and who they are with in their contact card).
- Or with a startup like Deezer to create a branded, music-oriented phone.

Q: Every time a new mobile OS comes out, everyone asks about the apps. Would a phone that was centered around an app make a splash in the cell phone world?

Hi TNT crew,

The best use of Chromebook I can think of is to connect to other computers through VNC or Remote Desktop. The Chromebook Pixel would be great for it (if not too expensive) because it has better resolution than the machine you are connecting to, and you can avoid the screen down-scaling.

However, I cannot find a simple VNC or Remote Desktop app that I can be satisfied with. All the apps I found require prepping the remote machine in advance or connecting through a third-party website. I have a Chromebook (earlier model) that I received for free by attending a conference. I often use it at the dining table downstairs and all I want to do is to connect to my main PC upstairs by simply specifying the local IP address and password just like with VNC.

I hope Google and third-party developers will realize there is a great potential for Chromebook as a "thin client" very soon.

Love the show! Please keep up the great work.

Dear TWIT and TWIT hosts,

I watch a majority of the TWIT shows every week and have been wondering why the only topic that comes up about the Google Glass is the once in a lifetime videos and social networking extremes. These might be cool things that would be loved by the top 1% and the tech lovers, but I feel like were missing how much this would benefit certain people's lives.

I myself am studying to be a computer scientist and something like this would revolutionize how I work. When I'm in the lab, having Siri as a hands free scientific calculator and reference, speeds up my productivity insanely, and in my opinion is the first step to having a technological assistant like Tony Stark's Jarvis.

I believe that the Google Glass will also transform the way that we will take notes. When I find something interesting on the internet that I would like to refer to, I will take a screenshot on the iPad which gives me an error free page of usable notes. This isn't necessarily as seamless as pulling out the iPhone and taking a quick picture for later reference for the physical world. Being this way, I find myself just skipping that step and later needing to go back or regretting the fact that I didn't care about obsessive documenting.
