tmInternet Explorer 10 rolled out to Windows 7 users today. The newest version of Microsoft's browser previously was only available on Windows 8 or Windows RT. IE10 is considered faster, more stable and more standards-compliant than previous versions of IE. Still, not everybody gets the new browser. Users of Windows Vista will still be stuck with IE9 and Windows XP stragglers can only use up to IE8.http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-3514_7-57571231/ie-reborn-internet-explorer-10-arrives-on-windows-7/

"I find it impossible to understand how 3, 4, 5, or 6 billion people are going to get their diverse needs satisfied by one or two or five companies, no matter how delicious those companies are," Kovacs said. "Is the farmer in the Indian countryside going to have the same needs and requirements as a lawyer sitting in New York?" http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13970_7-57571256-78/mozilla-ceo-android-ios-leave-lots-of-room-for-firefox-os/

iaDid your kid spend money on in-app purchases? You might be entitled to an iTunes credit or even cash. Apple was the subject of a lawsuit over "bait apps" - those are apps that are free to download but ring up dollars by selling virtual goods. That lawsuit is over and here are the terms of the deal - Apple will offer a $5 iTunes credit to those who claim a minor bought in-game items w/o their knowledge or permission. If your kid bought more than $30 worth of stuff, then you can get a cash refund. http://gigaom.com/2013/02/25/apple-settles-lawsuit-over-apps-aimed-at-kids-will-pay-5-itunes-credit-or-cash/

tmThe Pirate Bay has moved out of its native Sweden, to bandwidth providers in Norway and Catalunya in Spain. Sweden's Pirate Party had been providing bandwidth to the file-sharing site, but received a warning from the Rights Alliance in Sweden that legal action would be taken after Feb. 26. Norway ISP Telenor fought off an IFPI challenge to block The Pirate Bay and Spain's Copyright Commission has not taken aggressive action in response to copyright complaints. iaSpeaking of Google, Google is about to solve one of the biggest annoyances of tabbed browsing. The company is working on a way to identify which Chrome tab is playing audio or recording audio. The favicon of the tab could show animated meters to alert you which one of those tabs is squawking at you. The audio detection feature is currently in testing - it was spotted in the latest Chromium build. It's unknown whether this feature will work with plugins like Flash. http://thenextweb.com/google/2013/02/25/google-chrome-may-soon-get-audio-indicators-to-show-you-noisy-tabs-keep-them-open-when-memory-runs-out/

- According to a new survey commissioned by Telerik’s Kendo UI, the majority of developers now prefer to work with HTML5 instead of native apps for their cross-platform development.
- “Since the walls of AOL came down we’ve had a 1000% increase in content online,”

Andy Rubin: Samsung’s Android Success Mostly About Just Executing Wellhttp://allthingsd.com/20130226/andy-rubin-samsungs-android-success-mostly-about-just-executing-well/

.

- WSJ reports Google's getting nervous about Samsung's dominance in Android
- Specifically, Google execs fear that since Samsung sells about 40% of Android devices, it could use that as leverage to renegotiate Samsung and Google's deal to eat into Google's mobile-ad business
- Samsung in the past has received more than 10% of Google online-advertising revenue generated from its Web-search engine, acc'g to the Journal's sources

Rubin talking at MWC
- “There’s one big company that’s being hugely successful,” Rubin said in a roundtable with reporters at Mobile World Congress on Tuesday. “That’s mostly about execution. It’s not mostly around Android.”
- “Should I be unfair to Samsung? I can’t do that. I have to be fair to everyone.”

Q: What can Google really do about something like this? Would Samsung jump ship from what has made it so popular in the mobile space?
- At MWC, Google is meeting with other Android device makers to keep Samsung's influence in check via competition
- The WSJ says Andy Rubin said Google's recent acquisition of Motorola Mobility served as a kind of insurance policy
- Samsung shipped 160M Android smartphones in 4Q2012

slGoogle+ Sign-In takes on Facebook Connect and frictionless sharinghttp://www.theverge.com/2013/2/26/4030970/google-plus-sign-in-takes-on-facebook-connect-and-frictionless-sharing

.

- Google+ Sign-In is Goog's answer to FB Connect
- login for websites and mobile apps to port over some g+ info. tell site or app what it's allowed to access, choose what friends/circles are shared with, "private" setting available, - system works with Google's two-factor authentication.
- Android users get extra functionality- when logging into a site they can push any mobile app version directly to their phone.
- passive sharing (what music i'm listening to) doesn't show up on friends' feeds, but they can see it if they view my profile & have permission to see it. goog says less spammy this way
- Active sharing is direct post to the Google+ feed of the person you've reached out to. Google calls this "interactive sharing." post appears as stylized card with a call to action — like a "buy" button if you're sharing an item from a commerce site, or a "listen" button if you're sharing a song.
- when users share a negative review of a product from Beautylish (g+ sign-in launch partner), the card simply presents the review. When a positive review is shared, however, it triggers an "add to cart" button that lets people start the purchase process right away.
- Beautylish is dropping the Twitter sign-in option — and will be going forward with Google+ Sign-In and Facebook only. (forced to drop twitter to become launch partner?)
Fitbit, Shazam, Flixster, and The Guardian among list of launch partners

iaApp.net goes gratis, announces invitation-only free accountshttp://www.engadget.com/2013/02/25/app-net-free-account-invite-only/

.

Introducing a free tier
http://blog.app.net/2013/02/25/introducing-a-free-tier/

.

- App.net is opening up to more people with a free tier
- Here's how it works: if you receive an invite from a paying member of App.net, you can join and use App.net for free
- Paying members can receive 10GB of cloud storage for $36/year or $5/month
- Both the invited person and inviter receive 100MB additional storage if they both follow at least 5 other accounts and the invited member authorizes a third party app.

Free Tier is limited compared to the paid ones
- Free can follow a maximum of 40 users, get 500MB of storage, and can upload a file with a max size of 10MB (paid accounts can upload 100MB files)

Q: Will these conditions grow App.net use and its user base? Will it spur third party app development as well?

slOpera overhaul: WebKit-based Android browser due Q2http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13970_7-57571325-78/opera-reveals-its-new-webkit-based-browser-for-android/

.

- Opera is dumping its own Presto for open-source WebKit used in Chrome and Safari, and showing off the results at MWC
- CEO Lars Boilesen says Opera wants to be innovative but it was "trying to compete on something where there's no perceived value or benefit for the user."
- first priority in the WebKit era is Opera for Android, which unlike Google's Chrome will work on Android 2.3 aka Gingerbread.
- new features: Off-road Mode -- a hybrid browsing idea Opera promised in 2011. Opera's Mini browser relies on servers to boil down Web pages and send lightweight versions of them to phones.
- merged the browser's bookmarking tool with its Speed Dial feature to collect the user's preferred Web sites on a launch page
- group multiple Speed Dial icons can be grouped together the same way iOS and Android phones let people group apps
- private-browsing mode
- Tapping a tabs button similar to that used by Android versions of Chrome and Firefox reveals a Cover Flow-like sliding array of Web page thumbnails.
- swiping to the left from speed dials shows a new feature called Discovery. It shows a grid of Web pages selected to be of interest to you based on preferences you set, your location, and eventually your gender.

Hey TNT Crew,

A while back you where discussing a story about Office for iPad. You referenced an article that said Microsoft was leaving money on the table by not selling it. I was thinking that instead of selling it they may just give it away. Sounds crazy I know. Microsoft has started transitioning people toward subscription model with office. Microsoft could give the app away but require you log in using you Microsoft ID and verify a subscription to office to use it. Thus bypassing the 30% that apple charges and drive more people onto the subscription model.

Thanks

Shortie in Florida.
